A TRUE FEMALE ICON
“According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate beings condemning them to spend their lives in search for their other halves.”
~Plato’s The Symposium

Things in Mulan I didn’t catch as a kid.
Thou ill-formed offspring of my feeble brain, Who after birth didst by my side remain, Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true, Who thee abroad, exposed to public view, Made thee in rags, halting to th' press to trudge, Where errors were not lessened (all may judge). At thy return my blushing was not small, My rambling brat (in print) should mother call, I cast thee by as one unfit for light, The visage was so irksome in my sight; Yet being mine own, at length affection would Thy blemishes amend, if so I could. I washed thy face, but more defects I saw, And rubbing off a spot still made a flaw. I stretched thy joints to make thee even feet, Yet still thou run'st more hobbling than is meet; In better dress to trim thee was my mind, But nought save homespun cloth i' th' house I find. In this array 'mongst vulgars may'st thou roam. In critic's hands beware thou dost not come, And take thy way where yet thou art not known; If for thy father asked, say thou hadst none; And for thy mother, she alas is poor, Which caused her thus to send thee out of door. This is the poem we are reading in English and the drawing my friend was inspired to make.

A Letter to my Drama Teacher
Dear Drama Teacher
I'm looking forward to helping out with Thoroughly Modern Millie in anyway I can; it is one of my all time favorite shows. I'm so thankful I've been allowed to crew so many of LC's productions over the last several years and I need you to know I appreciate all the opportunities you and the LC drama department have given me because I really do! I'm so happy to be your T.A. and I love being a drama club officer. But as I'm sure you're aware, and I know it goes for several other kids as well, I'm really disappointed that I will not be in Thoroughly Modern Millie at LC. I understand that I'm not a talented dancer (I'm actually pretty bad) and I am not as strong of a singer as I would like to be, both of which are so important for being in a musical. I've always tried to work hard, have a good attitude, represent your department well, and be polite and kind to everyone so I sincerely hope it was not something I did wrong which led you to not cast me in Millie. I would love to know the weak spots of my audition so I can work on correcting them. I wish I could have been able to enjoy the learning opportunity, that rehearsing a show everyday after school would have given me, but I know there are other ways to learn and improve. INTAF is coming up soon, there are Academy classes at Civic, and I can work harder in MT. It would be great if I could focus my attention more on the areas that I need the most improvement so please feel free to tell me where they are. Theatre has been so important in my life and I have worked hard to educate myself and I'm willing to keep working hard to improve and someday I hope I will be good enough to be onstage in a production. The last thing I want to do is complain about not being in Millie. I'm so proud of all the kids who will put on a great show. I understand that I may not be at the level of skill necessary to be cast in a musical yet, but I hope over the last four years I have improved and that I will continue to improve. I was really hoping to be cast in at least one open audition musical during my four years at LC and I've spent the last few days being very disappointed in myself, which is a why I'm emailing you instead of talking to you in person because I don't think I could handle that yet. I need to know that even if I am the least talented person in the department, I can get better and if you tell me what I need to work on I will work on it.
- An eager and ready to learn student (Siobhan)
