For anyone who is semi verbal, nonverbal, or otherwise struggles with speech, please know that there are people who will accept your methods of communication. There are people who won't infantilize you for using AAC, communication cards, making noises instead of words, etc. There are people who won't expect you to pick the mask up again when you stop being so 'talkative'. There are people who don't mind waiting for you to sort your thoughts, and are happy to include you in the conversation.

Sometimes I think about those old photographs from the late 1800s of snow drifts taller than a person, right in the heart of major cities, and then I think about how for the last 3 years we haven't had enough snow here to cover the grass.

#thinking of when I was a child #the school called all the parents to pick up kids early #because it was gonna snow so much it would swallow up the doors #“a blizzard” they’d said #it was already snowing when we marched outside #bundled up tight from the biting wind #i lived a two minute drive from my elementary school #close enough to walk #by the time i got home there was at least six inches #and on the third day of nonstop snowing #my family and i went out and shoveled 3 feet of snow #i built snow caves and a snowman and threw snowballs at my brother #it was so blindingly bright and beautiful and i laid there in a fresh snow angel exhausted and happy #nowadays #i help zip up my younger sibling’s jacket #squint at the bus stop through the light drizzling rain #in late december #and wonder if I’ll ever get to make hot chocolate to warm her hands #from throwing snowballs at her friends #climate change #global warming #twos talks
