Jasper is getting used to these sorts of things, though that hardly means he likes them. Truthfully, he’d much rather be at home, which is a little fucking bland of him, yeah, but it doesn’t make it any less true. These things are always full of people he doesn’t know. Or care to know. Or people who don’t really care to know him, and somehow he’s expected to have fun.
It’s all very whatever. He’s relieved, at least, when he sees somebody who looks as put out by this whole thing as he does. Naturally, that means he’s got to pester the guy.
‘ Hey. It’s, uh– Sam– Samuel something, right? Brownlee? Browning. ’
“Yup.” The first guess would have been close enough. Though he was reluctant to have just about any conversation in this setting, he felt better for having it with someone who didn’t quite know his name. He offered no further name clarification.
Sam didn’t really know who the man was either. Could be someone in production, or someone’s plus one- either way, he’d play mostly nice. There was never any way of knowing who was distantly connected to whom.
“Nice to meet you.” He jostled his glass from one hand to the other so he could offer a handshake, nearly elbowing someone behind him, who didn’t seem to notice. Who are you seemed a little networky, and he did his best to avoid it. “What’s your name?”

”Hi, excuse me.” Sam didn’t like approaching people, but he was good at it. Most of the credit went to the large team that made sure he looked good enough for tv- the Glam Team, they called themselves (he resisted the coinage of that particular phrase). Most people appreciated a symmetrical, pleasing face. He was lucky for that.
But there was something else to his man-on-the-street success. Sam had a practiced, almost pitiful look on his face when he approached a target. It was artificial, but so were most things. He happened to be a smart ass who long ago learned that only combative folks wanted to talk to smart asses. That made for good tv, but not the kind of tv he was in the business of making.
He let his smile falter just a little, plaintively. He apologized even before he began- for disturbing the person, for asking questions, for his barely-there fame. He would reach a hand out towards the stranger’s shoulder, but pull it back before making contact. I feel like we could be friends, it said, but I want to make sure you’re comfortable. Even busy New Yorkers, the shining example of can’t-be-bothered locals, weren’t always immune. Cameras wouldn’t be a problem at first. Cameras would come later, if the subject was interesting and willing to sign a form.
He performed his trusted routine now, attempting to quickly analyze the man who had unknowingly found himself within Sam’s target area, a local place for food or coffee that his producer had described as “chock-full of locals.” He could adapt the approach as needed. For now, he simply took a nearby seat. Even reluctant people would sometimes stay for a while if they were seated, if only to appear polite. “Sorry. I’m trying to find out a little bit about the neighborhood. Do you know it well?”
&. PLATONIC STARTERS.
“are you feeling better today?”
“you’re my best friend. you’re supposed to deal with the second-hand embarrassment.”
”come on, i can’t go to the party alone.”
“you deserve so much better.”
“here, let me help.”
“can i sleep over? my parents are fighting again.”
“you don’t have to deal with everything alone.”
“how about i come over and help you throw away all those clothes you’ve been hoarding?”
“you know s/he’s just going to hurt you.”
“call me. text me. reach out for me, for godsake.”
“you’re freezing. come here.”
“you know me better than anyone.”
“i’m saying this because i care about you.”
“ugh, you’re sweaty- get off.”
“you know what, we make a pretty good team.”
“we should run away.”
“you’re a horrible liar. i’ve known you far too long to be able to tell.”
“sing me a song please?”
“i miss her/him. and i know i shouldn’t, but i do.”
“let’s go somewhere. i’m tired of this town.”
“i just want you to be happy”
“don’t listen to them. they’re just jealous of how cute you are”
“i’m dying without you. when are you coming back?”
okay but i kind of want the whole famous guy meets normal girl and it’s not a one night stand he’s just staring at her the whole night from across the room because she has so much personality in a tiny lil body and maybe she knows who she is but she doesn’t overreact bc he’s just another person and they flirt a lil and hit it off. but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be there are no “let me fly you out” moments because she has school and work and barely has any time to think and their relationship is built on text messages and phone calls and it’s hidden from the public because if anyone knew then it would change so much and he never wants to make her life complicated because she’s so pure and the media would rip right through her
I left my laptop charger at work and I’m sure as hell not going back there until Monday, so I’m on mobile for the foreseeable future. :)

This was exactly the kind of place that pulled at Sam’s patience- an industry thing, his agent had called it. It looked like a bar stuffed to the brim with chrome, glass, canapés, and anyone who’d ever had a meeting with HBO. It had taken him far too long to get at drink, and no one had given him the memo about bringing a plus one. The grumpy bachelor schtick got less appealing with age, but at least it was a role Sam knew well. He worked through the crowd, weaving away from the bar to find a place with some elbow room.
Like this for a starter?? While I try to remember how this stuff works?? Idk how to even get back into this anymore??
Well, hi. I haven’t been on tumblr at all for what feels like a year, so this is weird!! I hope that people are still here.
New York always made him feel selfish. He breathed in- the smell of urine, street food, something putrid that was probably toxic. How could you not be selfish in a place like this, a place that would take all of you if you didn’t bare your teeth?
He boarded the A train and sat, one small suitcase between his legs. Please stand clear of the closing doors. It had been about a month since he had heard any PA announcement in a language he could understand. God, he was happy to be here. His knees spread apart, his unfamiliarity with the concept of manspreading showing.
