❝ Not for all of us. ❞ Gustave responded, but there's a smile that paints itself across his face. ❝ Maelle is always challenging me to a duel to 'loosen me up'. ❞ Sometimes she reminded him of a gestral.

Gustave used to think they were just legends until the expedition and now they were talking to one. Though he wasn't as invested in the tales like Lune, he did have a healthy sense of awe standing before Monoco. The gestral in question was certainly worthy of it having seen his prowess in battle for himself.

❝ We fought in the arena in order to get the password from Golgra in order to meet Esquie. It was quite the challenge so I can understand why they'd send the patates to learn there. ❞ Gustave thinks for a moment ❝ Though we did learn to fight in the Expedition Academy. I suppose in hindsight it is sort of the same for us in Lumiere. ❞

But it wasn't a love of fighting, but more survival. However, it has become their normal. Gustave can't imagine not having to fight despite wanting to change the world. It's weird. The smile he has is replaced by a subtle frown in thought. ❝ Though I wouldn't exactly equate it to a message. I for one don't find getting hit to be that relaxing ----- not that often anyway. ❞

"Mm, dueling is quite relaxing. Loosens all the joints and gets all that pent-up energy out," he nodded his head, knowing he liked Maelle for more than just the obvious. Hearing the mention of the arena had him severely missing the village and all the fights with old friends.

"At least she didn't make you fight her," Monoco only half-joked. Even by gestral standards, she was a freak of nature in just how powerful she was. If his memory still served him well, it wasn't until the 60th expedition that she really began becoming a true powerhouse. She became absolutely terrifying to battle, almost as unnerving as stalacts.

If he ever went to Lumière he would like to see their Academy. It never hurt to learn new fighting techniques and each expedition that came through always seemed to have a new trick up its sleeve. It was promising and he might even be able to help. Though, as he thought about it. The likelihood of him going to Lumière and them needing to learn fighting was abysmal. It was a saddening thought, but one entwined with reality.

"Oh? Then what is it that relaxes you most?" He inquired. What was better than having all the bad knocked out of you? Perhaps it was because humans were simply too squishy to really appreciate a good knockdown. Even Verso could be hesitant.

Have you seen how weak you are now? I'd beat you blindfolded.

. The grin that curled his lips was almost involuntary, muscles slotting into place when Monoco shrugged his hand off. Truthfully, stalacts thrashed the both of them- more often than either would admit. Verso remembered their last fight, a loss in all but technicality. The stalact had fallen, yes, but Monoco and he both had lost limbs.

It was almost nice, helping Monoco repair his joints, then, the repair kit he kept in picto coming in handy to tweak the gestral's joints. You're not a piano, but I do good work! he'd declared to Monoco's scoff. They'd had to return to the gestral village for a visit to fix it properly.

"I thought we got you one?" He made a face, then tsked. "Oh, it fell off a cliff, didn't it?" They kept wanting to get Monoco more feet, but that particular goal kept falling by the wayside- and some of them were brittle, a few broken over time and use. Sometimes it was nice to just spend days inside with pleasant company. "Well, once we get the foot, we'll be even more formidable. Though I do wish it was a better part of the beast."

He should have known the taunt was coming. Any time a foot was stolen from his grasp, be it the Nevron falling off some cliff or into the ocean, its feet shattered, or rendered useless in some other way, Verso was there to remind him of how close he'd been. It was all in good fun and didn't actually bother Monoco. His annoyance forced and there to match his friend's teasing.

"Yes, it stumbled back out of spite," he grumbled. Or maybe the icy ledge had just given under its weight. Either way, in its dying thrashing, it stepped back far enough to tumble over the cliff, shattering its feet and several of its spines on impact. So close and yet so far away.

"A better part? What is better than the foot?" Monoco asked. "Feet are strong, carrying the weight of the body and whatever else you may have on you across long distances. I cannot imagine a better part to use."

"Thank you, Monoco," Hinoka smiled sadly unable to help how she threw her arms around the gestral's wide shoulders, "I'm glad you're here with us."

It was murmured but the sentiment was the same. She wiped her remaining tears with the back of her hand before patting him on his shoulder. A duel would be good indeed, but she wouldn't be able to fully let loose. Not at the risk of exposing her gifts again. Verso and Monoco may know but that didn't mean they approved nor the other expeditioners.

"Let's get going then, yeah? Daylight is fading." Hinoka motioned with a hand and led the way despite how Monoco towered over her, " Not that, that probably means much to you, huh?"

There wasn't a second's hesitation as he wrapped his arms around her. It was a lot to take in; everything she believed was flipped upside down with a few words. The worst part was that there was still more heartache and confusion ahead.

"Of course, I'll always be here for you," he replied, sad when she finally pulled away. Staring down at her, Monoco waited patiently for her to wipe her remaining tears away and begin walking. Despite his long legs, he had no issue with maintaining a slow pace to avoid sprinting ahead of Hino.

"No," he said, a smile in his voice. It was known gestrals didn't need sleep, but he didn't have an issue finding ways to entertain himself. Sometimes, he even pretended to sleep, daydreaming of new Nevrons and how he'd battle them. "Then again, most of you don't sleep much anyway. Sometimes I wonder if it's simply the stress of the expedition or if you all require less than others before."

"Hey! That's cheating!" Verso looked at the Gestral turned into a Chapelier with a frustrated expression, keeping running as fast as he could. "You're not even running, you arse! This is a race, not a floating competition!" So annoying. No wonder the other Gestrals didn't want to compete with him.

"I won't take your victory well!" He kept talking, his breath getting erratic as he ran more and more. "Putain!" And when they reached the beach, Verso rested both palms on his knees, gasping hard to catch some air. Then, he raised a hard at Monoco, pointing at him with a glare, though there was a hint of a grin behind it.

"No-- no snuggles for you, you-- you cheater." His proud was shattered now, but he knew well he could have beaten the Gestral's arse in that race. "Not-- not fair." Damn it, he ran so much, his chest was heavy. Nobody could have won that race but him.

Monoco only laughed in response to his accusations of cheating. Once he was far enough ahead, he transformed back and ran the last bit fairly. When he stopped, he turned to wait for Verso to arrive. It was truly surprising to see how close he had been despite Monoco having the upper hand. While he would not say it aloud, he wasn't sure he could have beaten Verso even if they had started at the same time. True, his legs were longer, but his friend was clearly faster.

"There were no parameters set to prevent me from using my abilities to race," Monoco crossed his arms. "It was all fair and you're just a sore loser." It was all fun and games until Verso quickly proclaimed no snuggling. His arms instantly dropped as he took a step forward.

"Now you're just being a sore loser!" He pointed at him. "You never said I couldn't transform to race. You're lucky I didn't use one of the larger ones. I would have surpassed you even sooner. Just admit you lost fair and square."

Rook let out a long breath, stretching out a little, giving a soft groan as his muscles complained. His eyes moved to the sunlight just breaching the horizon and then took a proper look around the camp. He noticed a distinct lack of two brushy tufts lurking around any corners or distant hushed scheming whispers.

"Are Trouble and Noco off being menaces together?" Rook questioned, grabbing his cup again to make coffee number two, giving a quiet yawn. He didn't mind when the pair disappeared for a few hours together, Trouble knew to be back at camp before everyone was ready to move.

It was funny sometimes. Rook knew he had no interest in ever having children of his own even taking away the whole Paintress situation, taking care of Trouble often felt like the closest he would get. These little playdates with Noco were good for the little gestral.

"I'm sorry if they come back sooty again and will take care of bath time as penance." Rook perched himself back beside Monoco with his fresh cup of coffee as he spoke. Trouble's love of explosives was well known, as well as their habit of misfiring at times.

Monoco glanced around the camp when Rook asked about Trouble and Noco. They had wandered off quite a while ago, but both were more than capable of being on their own, especially around here. The expedition had cleared out the worst of the Nevrons and it'd be a while before more came to replace them. It was why he hadn't bothered following the pair to chaperone. Whatever trouble they got into, they could handle it and it'd be good practice for both.

"Probably still looking for treasure or harassing a Nevron," he mused, now searching the horizon for any sign of them. With daylight breaking, the rest of the group would be ready to move and he knew Noco would be eager to find new places to scavenge. Nothing yet, but that wasn't cause for concern yet.

"Pft," he chuckled. "Good luck getting Noco to take a bath. You're more likely to convince a Nevron to waltz with you." Noco bathed only when he wanted to and trying to get him to when he wasn't ready was like attempting to herd a colony of feral cats in an open field. He'd eventually do it on his own time when his bristles started to clump together.

"They'll be fine. It's not like they've ever failed to arrive when it was time to leave," Monoco looked at the others slowly beginning to stir, rousing from their slumbers. "Perhaps we should make more of that for the others." He pointed at the cup of coffee. He had long since learned most humans needed a pick-me-up prior to trying to socialize with them.

Clea tilts her head to one side first, then the other, and she examines their work once more after taking a couple of steps back. Working with snow can usually be quite bothersome - but that's not normal snow: her hands don't freeze when molding the white masses, and her fingers don't turn stiff and red with frostbite. Undoubtedly, one of the many marvels of her and Verso's Canvas — so why not use it to practice her sculpting skill ?

That cave offers them protection from the chilly breeze, its icy walls casting a pleasant blue tint over the scenario; she has Painted its ceiling with a sea of blinking stars. It all enhances their sculptures — the blue and indigo colors, that feeble glow shining above. Clea’s pieces tend to verge on the abstract, with many shadows dancing across their surfaces, almost morphing their shapes depending on how the light strikes them.

❛ Nonsense, Monoco, ❜ Clea reassures him, a happy smile on her face. She's grateful he's there to spend time with her; chases, games, battles — sometimes, it gets too loud, too chaotic for her. Maybe it’s just a desire for quieter moments in which to practice, even if it’s inside the painting and not back at home — or perhaps she’s simply starting to outgrow the kind of unbridled fun her brother still seems to prefer.

❛ There's no such thing as a ruined work of art, ❜ she says, raising her index finger after having brushed some fresh ice crystals from the hem of her sleeve. ❛ Anything can be corrected at any time, Papa always says so. ❜ His sculptures are simply a bit unrefined, that's all. ❛ Let me help — no powers ! What are you creating ? ❜

He observed her, mimicking her head tilts as he awaited her judgment. She was the artist after all and would be able to see the flaws and make the necessary changes. From there, he'd know what to do better for their next piece...that is, if she wanted to do another collaboration with him. The soft blue light emitted from the twinkling stars overhead gave the sculpture an ethereal feel, snow sparkling like minuscule diamonds. In the caves, unless they destroyed it themselves, it would remain frozen in time, safe from the howling winds and falling snow.

Her smile and reassuring words warmed him to the core. He was relieved to know she hadn't been disappointed with the outcome. His expertise lied elsewhere, mostly roughhousing with Verso and entertaining him with obnoxiously loud singing or other activities. In Esquie's nest, their voices carried far and sometimes they even heard her and François singing and dancing in his chamber. Those days became fewer as of late so he was more than happy to partake in Clea's other hobbies.

"I am glad to hear that," Monoco finally spoke, looking back at their creation. He was grateful for her words and looked at his particular section. That was the beauty of art; it could always be improved upon and he had one of the most talented Painters, or so he'd overheard Renoir and Aline call her, to help guide him.

"I was attempting to create us," he admitted. It had felt like ages since everyone had been in the Canvas at the same time to play and enjoy the wonder they had created. To say he missed those years, mere hours for them, was an understatement. Monoco stared at the lumpy set of snowmen that appeared more like a mishapen mountain range than the family of Painters, him, Noco, Esquie, and François. "They kept crumbling when I made them any larger, but now I'm afraid I cannot capture our likeness." Not that he did before.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (2025)

There was nothing else Gustave could do but follow the Gestral to his village. If he stayed there, by himself, he would eventually succumb to Nevrons or himself since his mental state was a mess. Not that he cared anyway -- it was just prolonging his suffering, he would die eventually. We're already dead. We're just catching up.

"Sure." With that settled, Gustave shook his head to wake up from his shock, to no avail. Standing up slowly, he glanced at the Gestral with a confused expression, trying to recall the conversation's details, but even his memory had been failing him. It was probably due to the trauma he had just passed.

"I don't remember but... have I asked your name?" His right hand reached to his backpack unhurriedly, to the Lumina Converter which was hanging on it. Okay, so he still had it. Was it broken? Hopefully not, otherwise he would need enough mental awareness to fix it. And clearly, he was lacking of it at that moment.

Monoco rocked on the balls of his feet, patiently waiting for Gustave. He wanted, and needed, the man to take the time to calm himself. There were likely going to be several exhilarating fights along the way and he would hate for Gustave to be distracted and end up in an even worse state.

"You did, but you were still deep in the throes of shock when you inquired. It's Monoco and you are Gustave, correct?" It didn't hurt to double-check. The poor guy likely just threw out a name as his mind desperately grasped for straws of sanity.

He tilted his head when Gustave grasped at his bag, touching something that hung from it. It was unlike anything he'd ever seen and his curiosity was piqued. Expeditioners always arrived with something new and exciting to try against the Paintress. It was truly remarkable to see some of their innovations and how quickly they could advance within a year.

"What's that?"

"W-wait, huh-??" Hinoka flushed red as he brought up his appearance, flustered more by his reaction--or lack thereof--to his newfound humanity. Verso on the other hand looked as if he wanted to push Monoco back under the water for just a little longer.

"Not exactly a fair choice when there's only two of us and you didn't have a face until a minute ago."

At least Monoco's humor was still in tact it meant there had been enough that Hinoka could bring back most of him. She now only worried about what she didn't. Still, she'd done it. Her picto faded from the ground and she tried to stand up.

"We should get m--wooah." The Inktress found it hard to stand, off balance and unstable. Verso immediately moved to catch her if she were to fall but she mentioned she would be fine in a moment. The rebirth had drained her.

"I guess we'll be here for a little while longer," She puffed, the exhaustion now becoming more apparent on her face. Green eyes lift towards the deep, warm brown that Monoco's had become.

"How do you feel....Really?" She murmured, "I need to know so I can help you, uh, adjust. If necessary."

When Hinoka lost her balance, Monoco moved to catch her as well, but Verso was too quick. As long as someone was around to keep her from falling, that was all that mattered. His lips pulled back into a slight grimace, an odd sensation. He then began shifting his features, testing how frowns and smiles felt before raising his brows, sometimes both and sometimes only one. It didn't take long before he started mimicking some of the expressions his friends had made in the past.

"There is no need to rush out of here," Monoco said, looking back at Hinoka, finding he enjoyed a slight smirk on his face. Seeing others smile always brought him joy and he hoped now that he had facial features, he could do the same. The smile faded slightly as he pursed his lips in thought.

"Hmm...it's...." his brows knitted together, a small crease forming between them as he tried to put words to the influx of sensations he constantly felt everywhere. It was no wonder humans sometimes just seemed to be overwhelmed by the smallest things. There was so much to feel and process at an alarming degree.

"How do I feel?" He questioned and idly rubbed the side of his jaw, noting the hair around his face was coarser than that on his head. "Hard to say...hard to process everything. Being reborn is disorienting for most, but that's because of the previous life's memories trying to filter back in. This is different. There's so much new information from just how intense everything feels on my body that I'm not certain I can process anything for concern."

“Where do Gestrals learn how to fight? Do you have a teacher or a school everyone learns from or is it just an innate thing that you all instinctively know how to do?”

As many humans as he had crossed paths with, none had ever inquired about where they learned fighting. It was typically just questions about them, such as whether they were creations of the Paintress, whether they reincarnate, and other similar questions. It was a welcome change and required a little thought.

"Hmm," Monoco crossed his arms in thought. "Depends. Noco taught me how to fight after he found me and I've been teaching him now that I'm his mentor. Many of the gestrals in the village serving as mentors to the newest patates send them to the arena to learn to fight. I would not say it's instinctive. It is more like a learned love for it. Some enjoy it more than others, but it helps keep the joints loose," he replied.

"I imagine it'd be similar to when you humans massage each other. Removes all the tension we carry. Is it the same in Lumière?" He asked curiously.
