Robin hobb has ruined me bc I’m reading a book now and I’m like wow :/ boring how this character is directly recognising their own experiences and thoughts in their own internal narrative :/
one of the many questions that assassin’s fate left me with is how is hap going to write a song about fitz and the fool leaving the mortal plane together to live inside a stone wolf for eternity without making it sound gay. if the song successfully enshrines fitz’s heroism for hundreds of years to come, I feel like several centuries down the line people are going to be listening to that song and going, “hmm. . . is it just me or does that sound a little. . . ?” much like we do today with gilgamesh and enkidu
molly + beloved duet to “i know him so well” from chess the musical. walk with me.
molly solo performance to someone else’s story. take a nice lil stroll around the block with me.
some days you’ll just be going about your life having a wonderful time and then BOOM. you remember the existence of lant fallstar.
I just love how deeply bad the Fool was at being a prophet early on. Like I have this critically important message for the Catalyst (to whom I’ve barely spoken, mind you), but I don’t really know what it means. So I guess I’ll just sneak up on him in the woods??? Try to be come across as mysterious?? And if he doesn’t understand my gibberish nonsense I’ll just call him stupid and run away??!? Brilliant stuff, babe. Like he really thought Fitz was gonna fall to his knees like “OH MY GOD. I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING NOW” and then follow him to the ends of the earth.
my Beloved
ok Ive decided it's been long enough let's revive chess again
I love bankoku-gai so much. yes multicultural city with her problems but no other place will ever feel like home like her
One thing I will say about Rhobb is that she is great at making epic fantasy situations a realistic amount of miserable and lame. I'm reading Fool's Fate right now wherein Fitz is stuck on a shitty ass boat trip turned glacier hike with 1. A very teenage teenager who is also royalty and (secretly) his son, 2. His ageing childhood mentor who has major control issues and won't understand why Fitz won't just do what he says and 3. The guy with the most strong magic mind powers, who also has an intellectual disability, Does Not Want to be on this Miserable Ass Journey, is Fitz's direct responsibility and is using said magic mind powers to make Fitz bump his head on things.
This could be epic. It's a bit epic. There's a prophecy maybe. It doesn't feel epic. It feels miserable. Everyone keeps getting seasick. Everyone is pissed off at each other. The ageing mentor figure is a bit bigoted but refuses to acknowledge it. The teenager keeps having teenage moments. The quest might be impossible and also doomed. Also it's raining.
Honourable mentions also go to Fitz's teenage dream-walking illegitimate secret daughter who is also currently pissed off at him, the prince's plot-tormented teenage fiancee, a runaway boy who is the son of his emotionally fraught teenage situationship ex and his childhood father figure (both of whom believed him to be dead), and the guy who seems to know all Fitz's secrets which is surprisingly ok since he's a weirdly chill guy except that he keeps trying to get Fitz to make healthy life choices (now is NOT the time). And then The Fool (oh boy) rocks up. What a time to be alive.
many people do not know this!
While everybody else was wandering the city and getting in fights with aspiring deities, Mizuiro was robbing convenience stores for the zombie apocalypse survival kit. Here he tries to blow up Aizen with a canister of gas and a lighter, and wow, this kid is wild, it’s like he’s the protagonist of a completely different manga.
no guys I don't like Beloved I just draw them everyday
