I had friends in high school who were really into anime, and, though they would hang out with me, kept to themselves about the subject and left me out of the conversation.

I made a friend as an adult who was really into anime, and he would talk to me about the things he liked and what he think I would like and encouraged me to participate in the things he enjoyed.

This isn’t about watching anime, this is just a lesson I’ve learned. Hang out with people like the second person. I spent way too much time with friends who liked to exclude, and not enough time with friends who wanted to include.
