I love all the possible implications from: “Mama is trans and wasn’t out back then”, “Mama successfully committed feminist voter fraud”, to “Mama just fucking voted and the people running her local ballot box knew what was fucking good for them and stayed out of her way”.

for the last time y’all cannot “miku made this” harry potter. you cannot separate harry potter from jkr and her bigotry because the text itself is FULL of it. a short list of the bullshit that’s in hp that y’all cannot pretend doesn’t exist within the actual text:

-the goblins who run the banks, which are obvious antisemitic caricatures

-rita skeeter, a transmisogynistic caricature (the books often reference her “masculine features” and she’s portrayed as being predatory and spying on children)

-boys being unable to enter the girls dormitories (innocuous on its own but becomes very sinister when you know her beliefs)

-the fact that there’s maybe 5 canonically black characters in the books (hell i can only think of 3 off the top of my head)

-the house elves just LOVE being slaves and when hermione tries to free them shes viewed as being “weird” and over the top about it

-the horrific treatment of cho chang, who is (to my knowledge) the only canonically east asian character

-the fact that there’s a “pureblood supremacist” house in hogwarts and everyone is just fine with that

-likening lycanthropy to AIDS is troubling on its own but especially considering fenrir greyback’s big goal was to “spread it” is... oof

-the whole WOG gay dumbledore fiasco gets even worse when we remember that he was apparently in love with a fascist. also the fact that she said he “turned asexual” afterwards which is not how asexuality works

-the fact that hermione was 14 and viktor krum was 18 when he took her to whatever that fuckin dance was called and this is just seen as totally fine and not weird at all

and there’s SO much more, this is just all i can remember off the top of my head. like... y’all can’t pretend these flaws in the books don’t exist. the movies are just as bad and in some respects even worse, especially considering the lack of characters of color. you CANNOT ignore this shit when you’re reading or watching harry potter. and this isn’t even getting into the fantastic beasts series and the mess of stuff that comes with that.

y’all are allowed to like harry potter. nobody’s gonna stop you. i understand that for some people it’s very meaningful to them and i get that. but you have GOT to be critical of it. you can’t just pretend jkr’s voice isn’t there. it is, and it’s a big part of the story. you can like problematic media (theres some problematic media that i enjoy critically) but it’s irresponsible to consume it uncritically and without examining it through that lens.

Reading wiki entries for historical trans men…

Dr. James Barry, Albert Cashier, Charley Parkhurst, Billy Tipton, and Dr. Alan Hart could have each written “I am a man and want to be recognized across history as such” and transphobes would still be like… “wow what misunderstood butch heroes… lesbian icons!!!!”

Interesting how… I didn’t argue that women haven’t disguised themselves throughout history. I mentioned specific instances of historical trans men for whom there is evidence to conclude they identified as men and not women. I said nothing against lesbians in my post either, only about transphobes.

Anyways: 

Dr. James Barry had a close relationship with Lord Charles Somerset and was subsequently accused of buggery, which led to a court trial and investigation as homosexuality was illegal. He could have revealed that he was female at any time during the trial to escape condemnation, but he did not. Upon his death, Barry left strict instructions that his body was not to be undressed and he was to be buried in his bedsheets. 

Albert Cashier could not read or write, but lived as a man for 53 years, even after fighting in the uniform of a Union soldier, he maintained his male dress and presentation until he slipped and fell, breaking his hip. 

The indomitable stagecoach driver Charlie Parkhurst lived as a man from the time he was 12, and after retiring, maintained his identity as a man until his death.

Also it’s interesting that you said that I could not undeniably prove any of these men were trans: Alan L Hart was undeniably trans, as he sought out medical transition and pyschotherapy for his gender dysphoria, referred to himself as “one of the fellows,” legally changed his name, lived as a man from a young age, and continued to do so until his death, so yeah, you really can’t say “oh he’s a lesbian,” can you?

while billy tipton might’ve initially identified as a lesbian, he later transitioned to presenting male full-time. he told his future female partners that he was a man and that his body was the result of a serious car accident. he went on to adopt children, and was known as a “good father”. at the age of 74, he refused to be seen by a doctor when he contracted emphysema, which caused his death. neither his later female partners or his children or friends seemed to know he was trans until he was forcefully outed at death

i’d also like to add

little ax broadnax, a gospel singer who performed in multiple quartets over the years with his older brother. while still living with his family, he was recorded in the US census as male. he was outed publicly as a trans man at death in 1992, having presented as male for over 60 years

I love the reveal in Over the Garden Wall that the story isn't actually set in the past but that Wirt has been going through this whole adventure in a shitty last minute Halloween costume he threw together and only half intended for other people to see him wearing. Imagine travelling through a creepy magical forest that seems to be stuck in the 1800s for several days while being hunted by an evil shadowy tree man who wants your soul but you're wearing an old power ranger mask from 2008 and a cape that's just a beach towel. I was talking to a kid in my daughter’s class today, and she said that she thought it would be fun to write a story about the Titanic, but with supernatural creatures.

So I said, “Yeah, that would great! What would the creatures do? Would they save the Titanic from sinking?”

And she gave me the most disgusted look. I have never seen a 9 year old face look so appalled.

“No,” she said, speaking very clearly so as to never be so grossly misunderstood again, “they’re going to eat the passengers.”
