An attempt to answer the question "what is mediated worlds?" through comics exploring THEMAS (the intersection technology, humanities, engineering, mathematics, arts, and sciences).

Finished inking my final comic for INT80P! While the course is almost over, the lessons I have learned about mediated world and THEMAS will not leave me. This comic sums up what I have learned and experienced through this class. The question "what is mediated worlds" is ultimately answered through this blog. To me, mediated words is understanding all parts of the world and reconciling the differences to create something new and better.

Rough draft for Comic of the mediated worlds "limerick" ! I put quotations because I realized that my poem wasn't a proper limerick; the first and last lines don't rhyme at all. So it's really more like a free verse- limerick hybrid. I thought this was really fitting of the class, since "mediated worlds" is about bringing two different things together and creating something new.

Appreciate now and the past:

expand your worldviews, small to vast!

all is connected

not one neglected

differences respected.

Laurie Anderson Doodle

Inspired by the song, The Dream Before by Laurie Anderson. Doodled this while listening to the song. I thought it gave a good metaphor of an angel of history trying to fix the pile of debris in the past. But what prevents it from doing so is a “storm called progress”. This song gives the message that we have to move on from the past and focus on the present. 

I also tried scanning for once!!

Week 8, Sciences 

Comic for my haiku, “Plato’s Cave” from a previous post. 

There are some political comments in this comic, but you can ignore it for the central message I am trying to convey in this comic. I am trying to say that the scientific method is vital to daily life, not just academia, and that skepticism should be practiced often in order to ensure that we continue advancing as a society.

The Meaning of Humanities

"Do the ends justify the means?"

"Yes", I say to getting shots and visiting the doctor.

"No", I say to the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture.

I've discovered a profound difference between

advancement of technology and advancement of society:

advancement of society always favors

humanity.

Plato’s Cave - A Haiku

Still and complacent

- What lies beyond ignorance?

Only seekers know.

Note: This haiku is for week 9 of the class, which focuses on science. I thought it was apt of the professor to talk to us about Plato’s analogy of a cave (if you have never heard of Plato’s analogy, here is the link to a helpful video we watched in class: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/plato-s-allegory-of-the-cave-alex-gendler). Science is a field that is about venturing out and testing the unknowns while simultaneously testing what we already know. It is discovery and rediscovery. I think the cave analogy does science justice.

Week 2 Comic; on exploring the world with mediated worlds and THEMAS in mind

Week 5 "Comic" done! I took bits of what I liked about my previous drawings and tried keeping those desirable traits as I progressed with this mini project.

Week 5, WIP continued

WIP for week 5, engineering! I am going to be taking one drawing of a character (Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII), and trying to improve upon how I draw her. I was inspired by Alexej von Jawlensky's final painting project in which he drew many drawings of faces to improve his artistic skills. I think this embodies the engineering part of THEMAS well while also incorporating art, since I am going to be constantly revising something, and engineering is really revision and change.
