Sun spiders or wind scorpions are neither spiders nor scorpions. They’re classified as arachnids under the order of Solifugae. Many legends speak about how the sun spider can disembowel a camel by getting beneath it and ripping it’s stomach open, but that’s just a myth. What it does eat is rodents, birds, insects and other living meaty things. It has a speed of about 10mph so it chases it’s prey and chomps down on them turning them into a pulp so it can digest easily. They’re not venomous at all, so their strong jaws are their main defense mechanism. Luckily for us, human flesh is not something they’ve developed a taste for. #EvokeCuriosity

The effects of stress may filter right down to your brain's DNA.
An experiment showed that the amount of nurturing a mother rat provides its newborn baby plays a part in determining how that baby responds to stress later in life.
The pups of nurturing moms turned out less sensitive to stress because their brains developed more cortisol receptors, which stick to cortisol and dampen the stress response.
The pups of negligent moms had the opposite outcome, and so became more sensitive to stress throughout life. These are considered epigenetic changes, meaning that they effect which genes are expressed without directly changing the genetic code. And these changes can be reversed if the moms are swapped.
But there’s a surprising result. The epigenetic changes caused by one single mother rat were passed down to many generations of rats after her. In other words, the results of these actions were inheritable.

How does a sunset work? We love to look at them, but Jolanda Blackwell wanted her 8th graders to really think about them, to wonder and question.
So Blackwell, who teaches science at Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior High in Davis, Calif., had her students watch a video of a sunset on YouTube as part of a physics lesson on motion.
“I asked them: ‘So what’s moving? And why?’” Blackwell says. The students had a lot of ideas. Some thought the sun was moving, others, of course, knew that a sunset is the result of the earth spinning around on its axis.
Once she got the discussion going, the questions came rapid-fire. “My biggest challenge usually is trying to keep them patient,” she says. “They just have so many burning questions.”
Students asking questions and then exploring the answers. That’s something any good teacher lives for. And at the heart of it all is curiosity.
Blackwell, like many others teachers, understands that when kids are curious, they’re much more likely to stay engaged.

Black Sesame Seeds on Heavy Metal Cleanup
Cadmium and lead are the chief contaminants of rice, wheat, and foods containing these cereals; mercury is often found in seafood. Trace amounts of these heavy metals can be extremely toxic to human health, since they have extremely long biological half-lives, or time required for half the absorbed metals to leave the body. Thus, there is an increased risk of chronic poisoning due to heavy metal accumulation in tissues and organs, which can lead to impairment of the immune and central nervous system. In a collaboration among researchers in Italy and Austria, ground black sesame seeds were shown to effectively bind to cadmium, lead, and mercury under simulated physiological conditions. Read more…

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed over the past week a dozen cases of Zika virus in travelers returning to the United States. With recent cases identified in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, the number of imported cases is likely to increase and the CDC also anticipates human-to-mosquito-to-human spread soon occurring in the U.S. "This is a very new disease and we’re learning a lot about this in a very short time," Dr. Albert Icksang Ko, Yale School of Public Health, told Medical Daily. Here, then, is a brief outline of some of the known facts.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Zika Virus.

Modern Medicine Has Roots in 2,200-Year-Old Tuscan Shipwreck
We like to believe that modern medicine is a drastic improvement over the methods employed by ancient civilization. In fact, in many ways, modern medicine is a huge step up, since we no longer perform lobotomies, use leeches, and have lead in our beauty products. However, the finding of a shipwreck discovered off the coast of Tuscany indicates that our ancestors also knew a thing or two about medicine. Ingredients found in treatments that would have been used to soothe sore eyes are some of the same ones that we still use today.
