Hearing the comment, Clockworkâs left eye twitches. Heâs trying to offer the man a firm frown too, but the light in his cheeks only seems to grow brighter as he sputters. As much as he likes Arthur, Clockwork is pretty sure he could pick the guy up and throw him so far in to the future that Heh himself might have to fetch the little shit. Probably would earn him a lecture though, and Clockwork isnât particularly feeling all that.
Besides, itâs a little hard to react in such a way when his bicep is squeezed. It is as unexpected as the warm hand upon his cheek after all, and it honestly just leaves him feeling weird and bubbly.
âUh, well, I donât know that Iâd go that far Arthur. I mean, if you feel that way I guess I canât really complain, but I havenât really done anything worth being called sweet. I mean I guess you could argue I try to act like a gentleman though, but uh⊠donât I just act like any decent man would?â
And as he says this, Clockwork shyly moves to lean in to Arthurâs palm. Of course, by the time heâs ready to settle though the hand is already dropping. Itâs a bit disappointing really, but Clockwork makes no comment on it as he slowly raises a hand to rub st his cheek instead. The feeling of his own hand isnât as comforting though, and Clockwork forces himself to ignore the sudden chill that seems to settle there.
Perhaps the temperature around them has just dropped, or something.
Arthur laughed and shook his head. âYou would think. But decency isnât as commonplace as you might expect. Or for me it isnât. But a lot of people I deal with- they have this false kindness.âÂ
Whether it was a small thing like a stroke to their ego or to prove to themselves they were a âgood personâ, or because they eventually wanted something larger from him, he was all too aware there was some hidden motive to many interactions. âPeople who are kind like you for no other reason than to be kind arenât impossible, but theyâre a rare breed. Maybe itâs because of where I used to work, but thereâs this superiority with a lot of people. Where their decency is pity or this patronizing better-than-you mentality, or their kindness is an unspoken contract to get more from you.âÂ
How many times had he made someone angry for declining a drink, because it took away their ability to hang the act over him and get him to talk to them? How many people had he asked to remain friends with instead when they admitted feelings he didnât have, only for them to walk out the door when they realized he was serious and waiting wouldnât make him indebted to them enough to âsee how it goesâ? How many had been kind until they had gotten what they wanted, and then walked out the door?
The internal turn heâd taken felt like lemon on his tongue, and he shook his head hard before laughing again. âIt should be common-place. And hey, maybe it is! Maybe the crowds Iâve been in for my lines of work have just beenâŠ.less than pleasant. But either wayâŠ.you are a pleasant thing amongst the not so good. A rare thing to enjoy. And I like that about you.â
