This is exactly why so many Marvel movies feel completely interchangeable. They hire brilliant world-class actors and then force them to fit into a standardized, corporate assembly line
Thatās pretty wild to tell the Asian martial artist his opinion on martial arts doesnāt matter
i think the key difference between george lucasās star wars and disneyās star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because thatās how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation canāt have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when youāre a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you canāt take sides. you canāt decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.
I have been looking for this post for years after I came across it and itās finally here and I need to reblog this because it is absolutely and entirely accurate.
#as I always say: lucas was making a samurai film and a ww2 flying ace film and a western film and adding laser swords#because he fundamentally LIKED samurai films and dambusters films and westerns and 40ās adventure serials#but disney are making a āstar wars filmā and adding nothing because it already had laser swords and they have nothing else to say#xerox of a xerox baybeeeee (via harrietvane)

Just once I want to be asked to participate in such a study
I got to participate in such a study, although probably due to the exact spots they stimulated, bliss wasn't one of the sensations provoked.
The best one they gave me was like a rush of electric energy, feeling like it welled up in the core of my chest and rolled out into my limbs like a wave (at which point I would have to wiggle my hands and feet to "shake it off"). I wouldn't describe it as unpleasant either, but it was kind of overwhelming, and after several jolts I'd feel like I'm done and want to take a break.
That one came from tickling my ventral capsules, which a little pacemaker-type device continues to do several hundred times a day every day in order to make me not severely depressed (at a milliamperage too low for me to feel it, mind you). They did also hit spots in my my amygdala, hippocampus, subgenual cingulate cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex, but none of those produced euphoria either. Brains are so fiddly that you can get different results from stimulating sites a fraction of an inch apart, so it wouldn't be surprising if they just didn't happen to poke whatever square millimeter of brain tissue does that for me.
I also occasionally have dreams about weird and off-brand variants on this sensation. Like probably once every five months or so. It's the only one that stuck hard enough to make it into my dreams. They're always cyborg anxiety/thrill dreams about being forcibly exposed to electricity or some powerful EM field or something that sets it off.
there was this other one which was Evil Wireheading. I forget which site prompted this one, but I'd very abruptly feel everything go distant and fuzzy, yet not in a losing-consciousness kind of way -- it kind of felt like I was the only thing remaining real while everything else got hazier. it made my eyes unfocus unevenly which didn't help. and imparted kind of a faint swollen feeling I can only describe in a synaesthetic way. Made me think of bubblegum reddish-pink and rubber balloons and the word "heee" but in a strained kind of way. Also I quickly started getting the inexplicable sense that something Bad would happen if they kept pressing that button. So they didn't try to find out.
the only "irreplaceable sensation I wish I could experience on demand" I've had was when I was in the ER and they gave me a refrigerated Dilaudid IV and the combination of the low temperature and the opioid effect made me think "omg they're changing my coolant š"

*slaps roof of Chandler/Joey ship*: This bad boy can fit so many tropes in it
Bro they're best friends they're basically soulmates they're ROOMMATES they're two halves of a whole idiot Chandler is basically Joey's sugar daddy but we don't talk about that they're technically enemies to lovers for .5 seconds because Chandler didn't actually want Joey to move in with him but he got over that after one evening of hanging out with Joey and his floppy hair and his beautiful brown eyes they match each other's freak okay? Joey moved out and they were both so sad about it that they spent the entire night they were apart on the phone and then Joey helped Chandler gaslight his new roommate into thinking he'd never lived with him so he could come home again. They're not normal about each other and it's bc they're in love thank you for coming to my tedtalk
āThe LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that heās the most boring average person in the world. Itās impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if sheās female sheās already SOMEthing, because sheās not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but itās weirdly prevalent in childrenās entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, whoās a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new charactersā is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?ā
ā Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)
#Shit I say this stuff all the time#Default is not male#Women are not a different species from men#Itās a toaster itās make believe it can be whatever you fucking want it to be#Also voice actors get cast in the āwrongā gender roles all the time#Do you know how many little boy characters are played by women#Do you know how many little boy characters are played by *Tara Strong*???#I did not watch an anime in which an adult man is played by a woman VA for 90 fucking episodes in the 90s#To have to suffer the stringent gender opinions of men who feel too threatened by the idea that a woman could be their equal
The Lego Movie, Kung Fu Panda, Ant-Man
Part of a long tradition of movies in which, in order to demonstrate that the underdog EveryMan can succeed, he displaces a woman with much more talent and training and weāre not meant to think too hard about the implications of that
(Donāt worry! Talented well-trained women are allowed to be love interests as a consolatio prize.)
