Seven mile ass kicker on the ridge today. Amazing views all around!
Nice evening for a running stop on the way home from a long day at work.
Running is a thing worth doing not because of the future rewards it bestows, but because of how it feeds our bodies and minds and souls in the present.

Decided to run a fast two miles after dinner. Felt awesome. Listened to my friend Andy Haynes' new hilarious comedy album while I ran. Comedy might be my favorite new running fuel.
I love running on gloomy days like yesterday was.
Been reading since I got back from my run. Bless this three day weekend! Iāll be stressed tomorrow, but todayās solid.
10.5 miles on a gloomy day. Best way to start back on the mountain.
The heat wave is over! Bring on June Gloom and long trail runs. Off to Griffith for 9 miles to clear my stupid head after a stupid week.Ā
Chuck threw signed severed arms into the crowd. Genius night! Snagged signed copies of Fight Club and Tell All in addition to this appendage and a bag of candy.
What is the app that you use to track your runs/hikes? Are there any other fitness apps that you'd recommend?
I use Runkeeper and have it going at the same time as NikeRun in case one shuts off mid run. I track everything else through the UP app and my Jawbone Up band. Nike has lots of good workout apps that I use for various gym things as well.
NO SLACK ALLOWED: 10 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR MILES FRESH
By Another Mother Runner
Weāve just inched past January, but it feels like you made those New Yearās Resolutions decades ago. Time to recommit to your miles, runner, as springtimeāand race seasonāis just around the corner. (Weāre right about that, Ma Nature, arenāt we? No more Polar Vortex jokes in March, right?) Here are ten ways to minimize the slack as we wait out the rest of winter:
Put a number on it.Ā Write down a specific training goalā100 miles in a month or five hours of sweat a week, for instanceāand then record each step of your progress towards it. Thereās something so crisp and rewarding about notching regular progress towards a goal. One tip: go old-school with pen and paper, and hang it on your bathroom mirror or fridge, where youāll be reminded of it frequently.
Do the workouts you love. If you love hills, eat āem up. Or if thereās a route that always makes you smile, run that baby until you carve a path on it. Unless youāre on a strict, scientific training plan, thereās no reason to force yourself to do runs youāre unenthused about.
But challenge yourself.Ā Introduce one new running-related thing every week, whether itās intervals on the treadmill (10 x 1 minute at a fast-for-you pace, with 1-2 minute recovery); trail running (watch the ice!); setting your Garmin to beep if you drop below a set pace; or gunning race-pace for the final mile of a midweek run. (Hey, thatās a month-full right there!)
Get into heavy metal.Ā Strength training will benefit your running in myriad ways. You donāt have to go all āWODā. Planks, one-legged squats, hamstring curls on a Swiss Ball, push-ups, and bridges are all excellent moves that build solid (read: injury-free) running strength.
Better yet, mix miles + muscle.Ā Hereās a multitasking, tough workout; do it either on a treadmill, track, or, if youāve got warmer temps and dry surfaces, on the road. Warm up for a mile. Stop, do push-ups for a minute, walking lunges for a minute, plank for a minute, then continue on for another mile. Repeat the strength circuit. Continue the pattern for as many miles as you want.
Go long.Ā The mentally- and physically-challenging long run is the backbone of most training plans, regardless of the distance, so get in the practice of doing them now. Start where you are, not where you think you should beāyour first long run may be 3 milesāand gradually increase the distance. (To sidestep injury, your total weekly run mileage should increase no more than 10% a week.)
Realize prehab > rehab.Ā Take time now to iron out any muscles that are still angry from your last half-marathon and strengthen the ones that need it. Shore up your core in a Pilates class, foam roll, take a yoga class, do your prescribed physical therapy exercises. (Yes, we know your intentions are always good, but intentions donāt always translate to action: get on the floor andĀ clamshellĀ like your life depended on it.)
Donāt sabotage yourself.Ā Two golden rules of February: 1. The season of eating officially ended with the Superbowl. 2. Nothing (really) good (usually) happens after 10 p.m.. So eat like you know you shouldāheavy on fruits, veggies, lean protein, whole grainsāand get plenty of shut-eye. Heeding those rules keeps your wheels spinning, which leads to rule #3: Momentum is a good thing.
Be a team player.Ā Speaking of momentum, group runs are excellent antidotes to the running blahs. Not only do they provide entertainment along with miles, they also give you the opportunity to push yourself.Ā That guy in the red shirt beat me today, but just wait until next weekā¦
If all else fails, jump into a 5K.Ā Still got some, turkey stuffing, sugar cookies, and guacamole hiding under your waistband? A solid 5K effort gives you a reality checkāand a good baseline to build on when your spring season really blooms.
I saw the question you answered for that anon about music for running. DO you have any tips for just the running part in general? I've recently started to run again, but am finding it hard to keep motivated and difficult to stick with it.
Just run every day you can. I started out running just a couple blocks at a time and walking most of it. Eventually your body catches up. After that itās just convincing your brain that youāre not tired and listening to your body. Try downloading audio books or podcasts. Anything to keep your mind occupied. Running with a buddy is great too! I do my tough runs with my friend Shane every week and we keep each other motivated!
Run with a buddy! Run out your bad mood.
I've recently started running, and am trying to stay motivated. What albums to you recommend to listen to to stay pumped up?
First off, GOOD FOR YOU! Running is awesome, and everyone should try it.I generally have my music on shuffle but when I need an extra big boost Iāve found the following albums to be fantastic to run to. Anything with a good beat, thatās loud, and yelly is usually my go to.Itās a long list, so itās on the next page.
