Day 2: Makalaurë

Fëanáro was many things; inventor, craftsman, master smith, and he was also a linguist. He felt strongly about the preservation of proper speech, had revolutionised the writing system with his tengwar, and had even studied Valarin, something only the most devoted Vanyar bothered to do. 

So, when he became a father for the first time, it was no surprise that he made a study of observing the developmental stages of language learning in elflings. Maitimo was the first of his many research subjects to come, and he filled notebook after notebook listening to his son's babblings slowly turn into recognisable words. 

When Makalaurë came around, Fëanáro armed himself with paper and quill, and decided to run a little experiment with his second born. How would his tiny elfling mind adapt to being subjected to two languages in his everyday life? 

Thus, Fëanáro made sure to switch between Quenya and Valarin frequently whenever he spoke to Makalaurë, and he watched with fascination as his baby mind soaked all that passive knowledge up like a sponge. 

There was only one thing he did not account for: that when Makalaurë finally started making his first attempts at forming words, it was not just one language being incomprehensibly butchered, but two. The child’s penchant for imbuing his voice with Power didn’t help clear things up either. It posed the young parents a great challenge to not only do their best at deciphering what their baby was trying to say, but also to identify which language he was saying it in the first place. 

"Zik! Zeek!" Makalaurë demanded of his parents with a gradually mounting frustration. If only they knew what it was that he asked for so they could give it before the incoming Power filled tantrum broke out. 

"Is it Valarin?" Nerdanel questioned while she tried to placate the elfling with cuddles. "Náro, do you recognise what he's saying?" 

"No, and neither does 'zik' resemble any word in Quenya either. He must be missing a part of the original word," Fëanáro frantically flipped through his notes in search for answers. 

The issue did not resolve itself that day. In the end Makalaurë cried himself to sleep, exhausted and beyond miffed that his parents could not understand him. 

It was much later when they finally got the answer to the riddle that was 'zik'. A leisurely walk to the markets of Tirion was interrupted by a visiting bard one flowering of Laurelin, playing a jaunty tune in the streets that had Makalaurë shrieking in delight. 

"Zik!" he pointed his chubby finger towards the bard, making the family halt. 

Fëanáro looked between his youngest son and the elf playing his lute for the crowd, baffled. "That's zik?" 

"Zik!" Makalaurë nodded and happily hummed along to the tune drifting around the market square. 

Maitimo's eyes lit up in recognition. "It's music, Atya!" 

Then he turned to his little brother. "You wanted to hear some music, didn't you Káno?" 

"Music?" Nerdanel asked. "All that fuss because he wanted one of us to sing for him?" 

Fëanáro was just as stunned as her as he watched Maitimo encourage Makalaurë to properly pronounce all the sounds and syllables of the simple word while listening to the melody. 

"Well then... Mystery solved! It was Quenya all this time," he concluded, reaching for his notes stashed in his pocket. He was rewarded with a gentle shove and Nerdanel looking towards the heavens like someone praying to the Valar for strength.

but yeah in the same vein of Bruce’s kids only following his orders in the field…of course they do. in Gotham, if you don’t hit the deck when Bruce says “Down!” you’re getting hurt, at bare minimum. there’s no questioning orders or hesitating. you have to trust that when B tells you to do something, it’s in your best interest, or in the best interest of the civilians, to do it — and do it really fucking well. really fucking fast.

that doesn’t mean the JL give orders in the same way, even though they’re well-intentioned. that doesn’t mean they fully grasp an emergency scene or its civilians’ needs. they might not realize how risky an order they, as a meta, give to a fully human vigilante is. they’re not a tactician the way Bruce is — they’re not thinking in plans, and backup plans, and fallback plans and extractions.

so yeah, Dick doesn’t take direct orders from anyone but B. of course he doesn’t.

On the other hand - Dick knows best when to ignore Bruce's orders.

He has learned the signs to see when Bruce is exhausted/overwhelmed/stressed/otherwise compromised and liable to issue the wrong orders.

Most others can't spot the difference, given Bruce's near perfect acting.

So if there is a team-up, the others keep an eye on Nightwing.

Is he obeying Batman's orders without a second's pause? Bruce is fine, you can also follow his plan of action.

Is Nightwing pausing a split second before obeying, doing his own rapid assessment?

Batman is near the end of his rope, time someone else stepped in as backup.

Disregarding my own headcanons about gay Viktor and bi demisexual Yuuri, the rainbow here is meant as a general LGBTQ+ symbol. Not specific to one sexuality or gender identity. This is for all of us.

There’s a story behind this art, and it started with a tweet.

Allison talked about the common experience of believing you’re an ally, needing LGBTQ people to have happiness and support, only to later realize that you’re some flavor of LGBTQ yourself.

I wrote "I honestly think this is adorable about us. How long we spend as the deeply invested ally. Like, the queerphobia causing it isn’t good, I’m not trying to celebrate THAT, but I think it’s really cute that we find ways to give ourselves love before we’re able to name what we are.“

When I first shared that thought, I didn’t realize it would be a big deal. And then Allison spoke to me and, well, it’s huge for me too, now. So there’s art and there’s fic and it’s made with a friend who became very important to me. I’m so thankful ♡

Reblogging again because I'm mildly obsessed with this diptych. The artistry is obviously fantastic, but the symbolism is killing me.

Beginning: First we have Yuuri looking upwards but with his arms closed in upon himself, showing his yearning to shine but also the barriers he's creating for himself. Victor visibly depressed. Both of them isolated. And their respective spotlights and crossed shadows creating a large ❌ and indicating that this is not the way forward.

Ending: Yuuri and Victor respectively help each other find happiness. Yuuri shows himself fully to the world, and Victor finds more fulfillment in a supportive role than he ever did when he was alone under the spotlights. Both their spotlights on the ice form a heart 💜💙

(For those of my followers who don't know what this is about: Yuri!!! on Ice is an anime that was released in 2016 about (fictional) Japanese figure skater Yuuri Katsuki and Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov. A heartwarming story tackling subjects such as battling through social anxiety and depression to achieve success and happiness. Season 1 ended at 12 episodes with a possible hope for a second season, and confirmed news about a movie being in the works. Titled Ice Adolescence, it was probably going to be a prequel to the series. An animated teaser was released, but due to Covid and other studio issues, the production had been postponed until further notice. Just a couple of days ago, there was an official announcement that the movie was definitely cancelled. Under the circumstances, this was not exactly unexpected news but disappointing nonetheless. 😔)

Thank you SO MUCH for putting so much time and energy into writing this out. When @zombubble helped me come up with the first painting, a lot of this was what we talked about. I played with the lights to make an upside-down heart, I put Yuuri in the ending pose of Stammi Vicino and Viktor in the starting pose and played with the angles to show Yuuri's face and hide Viktor's, because when they were skating in the first episode Viktor was stuck in his burnout and lack of inspiration, but Yuuri was starting to carve his way out of grief and depression by skating in front of Yuuko. When I painted the second one, I picked a pose from the Stammi Vicino duet and tried to keep the symbolism and invert as much of it as I could.

I wanted these to be a celebration of their journey. And I'm so happy when someone sees it.

Viktor Nikiforov appreciation post: cute reactions to Yuuri skating his FS for the first time in competition

Every time I watch YOI, Viktor's reactions to Yuuri's skating are a source of pure delight. Especially that first time that he watches Yuuri skate his free programme in competition is a hilarious rollercoaster across the emotional spectrum.

Surprise / shock: "That's not the opening combo Yuuri was supposed to jump"

Viktor still has to learn that on the ice, Yuuri does what Yuuri wants and not what his coach wants. That 4T+2T took him off guard and makes him low-key nervous because he has absolutely no idea where this is going to end when his naughty student already starts off with a different combo than he was supposed to jump.

Nervousness: Hiding behind Plush Makkachin (1)

It dawns on Viktor that Yuuri indeed didn't listen to him, so he's bracing himself for disaster to unfold. Yuuri is prone to messing up his jumps and with 8 jumping passes (11 jumps in total), the free programme provides MANY opportunities for Yuuri to mess up. Having a naughty student must be hard for an inexperienced coach. But hiding behind his tissue box won't help, he'll only miss the best parts.

Indignation: "He really didn't want me!"

No Viktor, your pushiness made Yuuri uncomfortable. You don't know that he doesn't remember the banquet. But even if he did, do you really think he would have been happier? Things don't work like that with your nervous katsudon. This is one of those lines where the audio is etched into my brain. Junichi Suwabe really did an amazing job at Viktor expressing indignation. +5 GOE in cuteness.

Concern

When your naughty student who never listens to you and who's prone to messing up tires in the middle of the programme despite being rumoured to have a lot of stamina, that's ample reason to be worried. This is Viktor's first competition as a coach. Although he saw Yuuri skate in practice, he has no idea what to expect because competitions are fairly different from practice.

Joy / pride: "3A clean!"

Ahh, look how excited he is! That's a proud and supportive coach!

Rapture

He's hiding again, but not completely because the beauty of Yuuri's skating enraptures him. It's the first time he's seeing Yuuri skate this programme and giving his all because competitions have stakes. And while the mistakes freak him out, Yuuri making music is what Viktor has been drawn to since that video in which Yuuri copied him went viral. If he only knew that right now Yuuri is making this music for him!

Suspense: Hand down on the 3A+Eu+3S sequence!

That's me when I watch figure skating and my fave makes a mistake. He's just so invested in Yuuri's performance because he cares.

Disappointment: Yuuri probably just got a concussion, but all Viktor thinks about is his score

Regardless of his lack of experience, Viktor is a very supportive coach. But he also has quite of a savage streak. Who's gonna tell him that Yuuri just had a very important realisation? Experienced skaters normally don't jump into the barrier like that.

Positive surprise: "It's me!"

Yes, darling. It has always been you. The whole point of Yuuri's free programme is figuring out his feelings for you and showing you his love.

Figure skaters are expected to perform to the judges. That ending pose, the Eros intro, that move with the hands in Stammi Vicino are supposed to be performed towards the judges. However, except for that one time Yuuri blows the judges a kiss, he always performs towards Viktor. So that's why...

Just don't, babe. Your katsudon just showed you his love. You still have a lot to learn, but that's okay. He loves you anyway.

Originally, I've made this post to appreciate how cute Viktor reacts to Yuuri's skating. But somewhere in the middle, I've realised how much this first competition reveals about Viktor, even this early in his partnership with Yuuri. His reactions prove that he is totally invested in Yuuri's skating and that he deeply cares for Yuuri doing well on the ice, no matter what everyone who wants him to stop coaching claims. He doesn't need experience in coaching to care for Yuuri. Just that he cares from the start is one of the things that make him so precious.

I see (and love) plenty of fics where Batman reveals his identity to the Justice League by Batman taking off the cowl in various situations

But why isn't there more of Bruce Wayne having to go 'fuck it' and Go Batman In Civvies?

Like Brucie Wayne is your civilian hostage doing his best big, dumb and useless impression.

Members of the Justice League come in but keep getting incapacitated/captured.

Finally a hero is about to die and Bruce Wayne just sighs heavily because apparently he has to fucking do this himself.

Several members of the Justice League just like-

"Holy shit, Bruce Wayne just bit a guy he's gonna get himself killed. Oh shit, actually he just kicked that guy's kneecap in- oh what the fuck, did he just dislocate his thumb to get out of his zipties?"

"Am I insane or are you guys also seeing Bruce Wayne wipe the floor with armed criminals? Where the fuck did he- did he just pull that batarang out of his sock???"

He rounds on them with Hal's Lantern Ring that he just pulled out of an unconscious guys pocket and brandishes it like an angry mom who just found contraband in their kids room.

Bruce, so pissed he reverts to lingo he's heard his children use: I cannot BELIEVE you barged in here and let these amateurs just...just...YOINK your ring!!

GL, sputtering: Wh- I didn't- they didn't yoink it-

Bruce: they yoinked it, Hal! Straight up yoinked it!!!

GL: How do you know my name?!

Bruce: Of course I know your name!! IM BATMAN
