i never thought i believed in fate, but maybe i do.
it's hard to put a name on anything these days, at least one that will stick around. fate could certainly be a word for it. mercy's entertainment of the concept, of faith or belief in general has waned with the memory of her trust in either, for avoidance of the mistake of letting a sad, worthless old daydream become something akin to a fantasy, a subconscious surrender to idealism. it's just too expensive. some days, though — today, one could fairly say, she wonders if it is trying to contest her, grab her by the shoulders and spit right in her eyes while it's got her. it might certainly leave her with a definition.
❝ maybe, ❞ she says for politeness more than anything, for the sake of conversation, all but fiddling with the plate of food in front of her. her body hasn't refused it, but seems to still be warming up to the notion — a warning not to get too used to this : tomorrow you will wake up and it will be another day, just you wait. it leaves her dismissive, searching for an absence of meaning. ❝ i guess there's only so much room to wander. ❞

__________⚔ SHE WISHES THAT WERE TRUE. perhaps she could sequester herself away while she && cato both attempted to find their feet. they are in freefall, trying to crash land somewhere without losing themselves. only it's a dream. a dangerous one to hope. where is the honor in parading them around ?? where is the glory in the way sleep eludes her late at night or how cato hardly speaks ?? ❛ we can't. ❜ a pause, a breath. ❛ in two, when you win, you're expected to teach at the academy. ❜ she doesn't elaborate, but the rest is there. she will be expected to teach others to volunteer, expected to train them to die with rigor.
she shouldn't be surprised. she isn't, really; NOT EXACTLY. not in hindsight. perhaps a better question is why should she be? but the sinking feeling finds her anyway — that which only accompanies a dark epiphany. from here, she fears she has no more support to offer, dry of trying advice. she all but feels like a fool for trying — despite all of district 2's wealth and favor, at the end of the day, of this party, they're no less helpless than one another. as far removed from girlhood fate has forced them, it is still all they are in the eyes of those above. it steals any strength left for her voice, leaves a pause of silence she can't help but be aware of. it seems mercy can't bring herself to speak just to fill it, aware of this, too.
