Bank of Canada Asks Citizens to Stop “Spocking” Money

Martha nodded, ripping the discussion questions out of her notebook to give to him and pulling the laptop to herself. She stifled the sarcastic comment she wanted to make about his wallpaper — she wondered if he thought Banksy rebelled in a way that was meaningful. She thought she would be returning to that tangent a lot, today, and it was starting to give her a headache.
"Do you have your part written down, or is it on the laptop somewhere …?" Flipping her notebook to another page revealed the information she wanted to put in to the presentation, written in a neat handwriting that featured both what she wanted on the slides and talking points for the actual presentation. She had even put stars and notes in the margins for where she was thinking of looking up pictures for the slides.
"Man, Banksy's art is fantastic." Melchior gestured towards his wallpaper, "Wait, you know who he is, right?" He was perhaps one of Melchior's favorite artists, alongside Francis Bacon and Dalí.
"And it's it the second tab," he pointed to the next document, "Luckily, you can just copy and paste it." Melchior brought out a pencil and idly started tapping it, reading the questions.
What implications does the novel assert about society, and has this changed? Melchior scribbled on the bottom of the page, his writing half cursive, half angled print.

It felt like there was a lot of unfinished business, but Martha kept silent on that for the moment.
"Just putting all of the information into the PowerPoint." She finally shut her book and looked over at him. She didn’t make eye contact, but it wasn’t like she did that very often, anyways. "And I drafted some discussion questions for the group participation at the end." She turned away, grateful for the excuse, and pulled her notebook out of her backpack. She had jumped at the chance to write the discussion questions, since she was pretty sure Melchior would just use them as a starting point to get on his soapbox instead of letting students voice their own opinions like the assignment called for.
"Do you have a laptop, or should we use one of the library’s computers?"
"Yeah, I have my laptop." Melchior reached into his bag and pulled it out, "I've got powerpoint on here, so do you mind starting the info? I'll add and edit everything afterwards." It seemed both of them just wanted to get everything over with, and not with the usual sarcasm involved, but Melchior put it out of mind for now. The bright screen lit, showing a line of neat folders and a Banksy wallpaper.
"Here," he popped open the powerpoint program, "Do you mind if I look at those discussion questions?" He wanted to add anything, if needed.

Honestly, Melchior Gabor was the last person Martha wanted to see. She didn’t know if she was still angry, or guilty, or what, but it felt awful, and seeing him would only make her feel worse. And yet, here she was, waiting for him in the library, nervously fidgeting with the end of her braid. She knew it had to be done — their project would be due soon — but part of her wanted to leave and put it off for another day. A larger part, of course, wanted the grade and kept her in her seat, but it still nice to imagine Melchior arriving to find an empty chair instead of her.
She wondered if he’d bring it up. She had never known Melchior to keep his mouth shut, but she couldn’t help hoping. Still, she kept going over the possible scenarios, the possible excuses. Why don’t you call social services? Why don’t you run away? Why do you stay with a man who hits you? And, of course, the true answer was something she didn’t think Melchior would believe. I have no other choice. But that was the truth, plain and simple. And, honestly, she couldn’t even begrudge him asking those questions. She certainly would have, if the situations were reversed. What really got her was his implication that her “rebellion,” small as it was, meant nothing.
But she wouldn’t think about that. Otherwise, she’d get mad all over again. Instead, she pulled a book at random from the stack she had gathered, reading a random passage and retaining none of it. She was beginning to hope that he wouldn’t show when she finally noticed him. She looked up for a moment to nod at him, but then quickly looked down at the book, as if she could hide in it.
Melchior leisurely checked his watch, sighing as the hand ticked towards a quarter to four. It had seemed only a few minutes after class had ended, but it was time for him to leave already, and he waved off to Moritz with bag in tow. He already had most of his work done (though he hoped Martha wouldn't notice it was riddled with sarcasm and general disdain for the assignment), so he was hoping the meeting would be a quick one, with no arguments or angry boyfriends involved. Well, perhaps an argument was in Melchior's nature; and he still believed himself to be self righteous. He quickly pushed the door open to the library, scanning the room to find Martha.
"Hey," he set his backpack on the seat beside him, "Is there anything else to finish?"

Ipso Facto | Melchior & Wendla
Wendla could feel the blood rush to her face at the compliment. He’d said she looked cute. It was such a trivial word, and yet, she felt like she was soaring. “You think so?” She questioned him, grinning as her eyes locked on his for a moment.
As soon as he touched her hand, her gaze flickered down, heart racing at the contact. “Your hand’s warm,” she commented idly, slowly looking up again. She returned the light pressure, hoping that he wouldn’t be releasing her hand anytime soon.
His questions caused her to pause for a moment. “Ilse has seemed very adamant on keeping me away from you,” she admitted slowly, “but, the real problem is school. People are just being silly.” She shook her head, reaching up with her free hand to run her fingers through her hair.
"Yes, especially with the new haircut." Melchior looked back into her eyes and felt the squeeze of her hand; it was most he had felt at ease in a long while. "I'll walk you home?"
"Hmmm," he gave a non-committal hum, "Sounds like she is. But I hope you'll be able to form your own opinions." He laughed, linking their fingers and walking beside the deep blue river, "But she's right; I'm just the worst person in the world." Melchior rolled his eyes, "I'm the devil incarnate."

"That sounds wonderful." Wendla nodded. After a pause, she spoke again, in a softer tone. "I've missed you, Melchi." She wasn't sure what had caused them to grow apart as they got older, but she could feel the rift that had come between them. She would love to make that go away and to be close again.
She looked at Melchior for a moment before reaching out to accept the jacket. "Alright. Fine. If you're sure. " She pulled the garment on and smiled a bit. It was, of course, too large for her, hanging loosely around her frame and the sleeve coming to rest nearly at her fingertips, but she liked it. There was something comforting about it.
"You look cute," Melchior laughed, lifting Wendla's covered hand between them and squeezing lightly. Her hand was cold, but he supposed that would be his excuse for holding it. He smiled slowly. "I've missed you too."
The words puffed out with the cold air, and Melchior idly squeezed her hand. "School been keeping you busy? Or are the others warning you about me?" Melchior was plenty used to people talking about him, but he could dismiss petty rumor.

Wendla giggled a bit at Melchior’s comment on complaining about verb tenses and nodded. “That sounds great.” Wendla didn’t necessarily need a tutor, she did well enough in the class on her own, but help in sorting through all of the information and learning everything more efficiently wasn’t something she’d complain about. Plus, it was a chance for her to spend more time around Melchior.
She shook her head at the offer of his jacket. ” Then you’ll be cold,” she protested, though she was getting goosebumps. She looked up at the darkening sky with a frown for a few moments before returning her gaze to Melchior. “Do you think it’s going to rain again?”
"Hm, how about after school tomorrow," Melchior grinned, "would that be a good time for you? And plus, it's been a while since we've hung out." Melchior was basically free whenever; studies weren't much a difficulty for him. It was rather the teachers' attempt at indoctrination that kept him stressed, and he'd much rather be reading Faust than Romeo and Juliet.
"Don't worry about me, I'm actually quite warm after trying to chase Georg down," he laughed, sliding his jacket off and extending it to Wendla. "And it seems very possible, which, is why you might need my jacket."

Wendla’s smile grew as she listened to him. “It was an oddly crazy day, wasn’t it?” She replied. “But, school’s over. We can relax now. ”
She took the notes from him and looked over them. All of the new verbs were there, each conjugated in all six of the tenses. The amount of information was overwhelming. She looked up at Melchior and nodded. “Everything in the class moves so quickly…”
"If you want, I can tutor you." It seemed these days Moritz was less inclined to hang out with him, or even ask for help with his homework -- since he had Ilse now -- and Wendla was a wonderfully pleasant person to be around, and very pretty. "We can complain about Latin verb tenses together."
The sky darkened, and Melchior glanced at Wendla, "Oh, do you want my jacket? It's getting pretty cold."

Wendla stood silently by the river, waiting. Her phone remained in one hand, eyes constantly flashing down to it, checking for any kind of message from Melchior before looking up and scanning her surroundings once more. It has rained while they were still in school, or, at least, she assumed it must have, based on the increased level of the river and the puddles everywhere. The legs of her jeans had gotten increasingly damp as she waited, but, she didn’t mind. Out here, she could just talk to Melchior, provided he had the time, just try to catch up without any of their peers trying to interfere or her mother interrupting their conversation. The thought was refreshing and she welcomed it.
At the sound of his voice, the small brunette slipped her phone into her pocket, letting out a light hearted laugh. “Thank goodness.” She looked the boy over discreetly, her heart fluttering a bit at the sight of his smile. She found it truly stunning. “And thank you for this, Melchi.”
"It's no problem at all," Melchior smiled. At least Wendla always had the proclivity to be sweet and cordial, unlike some certain individuals he knew. "In fact, it's rather nice to be with you after such a chaotic day. Even if it is in this muddy grass," he chuckled, looking down at the ground, "in these ruined shoes."
He handed over the loose pieces of paper to Wendla, each page covered in painstaking conjugations. "That Sonnenstich is a nightmare, isn't he? It's ridiculous."
Ipso Facto | Melchior & Wendla
The dull scuff of Melchior's shoes faded as he stepped onto the wet grass, careful not to find himself in another puddle. He wouldn't say he had a bad day, per say. Or if his day was the result of karma. Melchior Gabor was not one for superstition. But if Melchior were a lesser man, he'd say a full night of homework, ruined shoes, and the rude looks he kept getting were the works of some higher, worldly power. He could see the outline of Wendla standing beside the river as he looked up from his phone.
"Sorry, my socks got wet and I had to hunt down Georg to give me a fresh pair," Melchior smiled, swinging his backpack over his shoulder, "but at least the notes didn't get wet."
Amandine Urruty’s Whimsical Drawings of Bizarre Characters
French artist Amandine Urruty’s busy graphite drawings overflow with humorous characters. Dog-faced people, sausages painting at easels, floating teeth, and tiny bed sheet ghosts run amuck in her whimsical worlds. One can spend a long time gazing at her drawings and examining each oddball creature. Though the artist’s typical work is monochromatic and small-scale, she recently tried her hand at a large, colorful mural in Zaragoza, Spain.

Doodle by bored medieval school boy
This 15th-century doodle is found in the lower margin of a manuscript containing Juvenal’s Satires. This classical text was a popular device to teach young students - kids - morals. The medieval teacher Alexander Nequam stated: “Let the student read the satirists […] so that he may learn even in his younger days that vices are to be shunned” (quote here). Spoken like a true optimist, because this page shows what young school boys like to do with rules: disobey them. And so in stead of studying the student who used this book drew a funny doodle in the lower margin: a figure with a flower in one hand and what appears to be a pipe in the other. Could it be his teacher? Doodles are of all ages but those produced by bored school kids are the most entertaining.

Faust
Faust goes up to the counter. He orders only tap water. The barista berates him, insisting that he order something more interesting. “Why?” Faust asks. “I’ve already tried everything. There’s nothing new for me to discover.” The barista leans over the counter and whispers in Faust’s ear: “what if I told you there were a secret menu?” A new spark alights in Faust’s eyes. He reaches for his credit card.
