I made this for you today. Itās the scene in Hamilton that goes between āDear Theodosiaā and āNon Stop.ā I made a decision not to record this scene on the album, for two reasons 1) It really is more of a scene than a song, the only SCENE in our show, and I think its impact is at its fullest in production form. 2) As someone who grew up ONLY listening to cast albums (we aināt have money for a lot of Broadway shows, like most people) those withheld moments were REVELATIONS to me when I finally experienced them onstage, years later. Hamilton is sung through, and I wanted to have at least ONE revelation in store for you. I stand by the decision, and I think the album is better for it.
I know, I know. āBut what about people who wonāt get the chance to see itā¦ā I know. āAnd Laurens is already so underrepresented in historyā¦ā I KNOW. THATāS WHY HEāS SO PROMINENT IN THE SHOW. So hereās where we meet in the middle. The missing scene is above.Ā Please understand that the reason I left this scene off the album is precisely BECAUSE I value it (and Laurens) so much. Human beings are pathetic. Everything human beings do finishes up bad in the end. Everything good human beings ever make is built on something monstrous. Nothing lasts. We certainly wonāt. We could have made something really extraordinary and we wonāt. Weāve been around one hundred thousand years. Weāll have died out before the next two hundred. You know what weāve got to look forward to? You know what will define the next two hundred years? Religions will become brutalised; crime rates will become hysterical; everybody will become addicted to internet sex; suicide will become fashionable; thereāll be famine; thereāll be floods; thereāll be fires in the major cities of the Western world. Our education systems will become battered. Our health services unsustainable; our police forces unmanageable; our governments corrupt. Thereāll be open brutality in the streets; thereāll be nuclear war; massive depletion of resources on every level; insanely increasing third-world population. Itās happening already. Itās happening now. Thousands die every summer from floods in the Indian monsoon season. Africans from Senegal wash up on the beaches of the Mediterranean and get looked after by guilty liberal holidaymakers. Somalians wait in hostels in Malta or prison islands north of Australia. Hundreds die of heat or fire every year in Paris. Or California. Or Athens. The oceans will rise. The cities will flood. The power stations will flood. Airports will flood. Species will vanish for ever. Including ours. So if you think Iām worried by you calling me names, Bennett, you little, little boy, you are fucking kidding yourself.
