"That — ” Mac chuckled softly, his blue eyes swimming with joy. “Is the most romantic thing I’ve ever been told.” Most people probably would have thought his remark was sarcastic, but far from it. He and Gwen had immediately clicked over their love of science and unconventional things, and he adored how she sprinkled them into conversation. She just got him; unlike most people. Even his cheeks turned a little pink, which could be a rare sight.
“I don’t know that I can beat that,” Mac admitted, lifting a hand to sweep a strand of hair gingerly behind Gwen’s ear. “But, I have to ask — do you have eleven protons? Because you are sodium fine.”
Warm hands caught her waist and suddenly she was in his arms. Eyes fluttered closed as the world fell away, her troubles and doubts melting into nothing. Fingers curled into his shirt, keeping him close just a moment longer, her nose buried in his chest, breathing him in as she slowly calmed down. He pulled away, too soon, she wanted him to come back and keep holding her, but that gentle hand on her cheek was too good not to lean into it. Finally she opened her eyes, staring up at the handsome face smiling down at her. “Just you, like you’re not dashingly handsome and intelligent.” Gwen scoffed. “And then you have the audacity to wear that leather jacket like you don’t know how much sexier that makes you.”
Teeth worried at pink lips, the blonde taking another breath to steady herself. “It’s just...I haven’t had the best luck with guys. My last...well it ended badly, bad enough that I volunteered for a deep cover mission on the other side of the country.” Not the whole story, actually it wasn’t even close to the story, but she didn’t want the weight of that destroying what she hoped would be a good night. “I like you. I mean, I really like you, and you know me, all of me, even the uh...super bits. And that should make things easier, but it feels like more pressure because I really want this to work.” The blonde sighed, laughing breathlessly. “And I should just focus on having fun, shouldn’t I?”
Shyly, her arms slid up to wrap around his waist, leaning in to rest her head on his chest. “Would I sound clingy if I said this really helps? That when you hold me, it’s like everything else ceases to exist and all I can see, hear, feel is you?” Gwen took a moment to listen to his heartbeat and breath in the scent of his aftershave before finally pulling back. “Funny how I hurl myself off buildings and into the line of fire on a daily basis, but a date with an impossibly perfect man has me nervous.” She chuckled at her own silliness, slipping her hand into his. “Let’s do this. I’m actually curious about what you have planned for us.”
