aka me attempting to write something from my ff14 character’s perspective on the razing of her homeland based on information in her backstory that i just figured out today please enjoy this awful vague piece about an underdeveloped character’s emotions over an event that’s barely been covered in canon

im Disgusted by my own work as usual but i might as well fight past my Weird Brain Shit and post it bc it’s the first longish IC thing ive written in a while

i think i prefer this to writing Tragic Backstories(tm) in the more descriptive style of my character bios tho who knows i might do this again for her, maybe even others

i’m not really sure who she’s addressing. one of the other characters in her Jolly Band Of Adventurers or someone else close lmao

im so tired i dont know why i tried but here goes

Fire rained down from the sky that day.

Not has I had seen it in my visions from the Mothercrystal, no. Were it the work of a God, imprisoned and enraged, perhaps I could have understood. Perhaps I could have learned to forgive.

Primals are strange creatures, after all. They masquerade in the skin of higher beings, yet they are undoubtedly afraid. Their entire beings founded upon crystals, their purposes defined by mortal men. They wish only to preserve themselves, and as destructive as they can be, and as vile as many are, they are but scared beasts clinging to a fleeting existence that was never meant to be…

But I suppose my philosophy is best saved for a better time.

Perhaps the Empire, too, is naught but a starving beast, clinging to the legacy of Allag and devouring all in its path to keep that legacy alive... But even the Dreadwyrm deserves my sympathies more than them. Bahamut was no more than a shade, rage incarnate and unleashed upon an underserving world. He knew not of the destruction he wrought, but the Garleans… Who in any mind could say the same about them? The razing of Doma, among many other atrocities in the name of preserving and expanding the Empire, was a calculated decision.

They were weak in spirit. The Emperor had passed, leaving the throne empty and unclaimed. Can they truly blame us for rising up against them within the chaos of the war of succession that ensued? For wanting our freedom returned to us? While the empire had brought prosperity in some ways, the whole of Othard suffered for their presence. We were less than them, and nothing could ever change that in their eyes.

What they lacked in spirit, of course, they made up for in cruelty and pride. Doma would burn, as a testament to the will of the Empire. That any who stood against them would suffer, that any who would dare to question their supremacy would be but ash in the all-consuming flame.

I would dare to say that my own family fit in quite well with them before we suffered the same fate as our countrymen.

If I were to call my family honorable, I would be a liar. But they were nothing if not loyal. Both to their country, and to the Empire that secured its well being, if at the cost of our own autonomy. Perhaps they saw themselves in the Empire. It would make sense, if my upbringing was any indication. Loyalty to those in charge could mean all the difference if it ever came to blows. Cautious loyalty, mind you – we were always told to put ourselves, and the family, before all else – but any sense of closeness could prove to be an extraordinary advantage if we, the daggers in their hands, ever found ourselves with a need to press against their throats. But until then, we would be by their side. Their coin, after all, was worth far more than that of even our highest-profile clients.

But it was foolish of us, a family of honorless assassins and criminals, practicioners of forbidden arts, and wielders of the power of Eikons, the antithesis of the Empire’s ideals… it was foolish of us to believe the Empire could respect us. It was foolish of us to believe that our compound, far from the city-state itself, would be spared the rest of Doma’s fate. We knew were no better than them, but they knew we were far above us, and in spite of our usefulness to them, we were more useful to them as an example to others who believed themselves to be equals with, or perhaps even above the Empire. We were no better than the beastmen to them, we deserved no less than total extermination

Although... perhaps Othard – no, the world – is better off without us. But even then, I can’t help but feel that our fate was too cruel. As despicable as my family was, they did not deserve to burn. I can still see the fear, and the pain, in my mother’s eyes as she…

Ah.

Perhaps I could dwell upon this for the rest of my life. Perhaps I could lose myself to despair, and give myself to the abyss. Sometimes, I feel as if I should, but if Eorzea herself could heal in the wake of the Calamity, how could I not expect the same of myself? Finding myself here, in this land of opportunity and adventure… it has given me meaning. I lost my home, I lost friends and family, but in the aftermath I found so much more. My remaining family, my new friends… they have given me plenty to fight for. The time will come when I will have my chance to exact vengeance upon the empire – not only for Doma, but for the other lands subjugated by their power – but there is no need to be consumed by it. This is a time for healing, a time for preparation. One day, I will overcome my past, I will repay my mother for her sacrifice, and…

… Forgive me. It is late, and I tire of rambling about my past. Perhaps I will continue another time. Perhaps I will actually make sense. But I tire... but...

… thank you for listening! I would rather not keep the past bottled up inside. There is plenty here in the present to worry about.
