I've had absolutely killer art block... thought going back to my roots and drawing some dragons might help so I pulled out an idea I've wanted to do for a long time.

Fun fact, Wings Of Fire is a dormant special interest of mine, and the one I had actively for a few years before DRA stabbed me in the back and left me for dead.
Art has felt like squeezing water from a stone lately, and that feeling persisted for most of this piece... It subsided at the very end and I started liking it and enjoying myself more so hopefully a little bit of strong arming was the solution this time and I've unstuck myself lol
Though I haven't talked much about it publically, I've been helping my friend Ink with relocalizing/retranslating Danganronpa Another 1 for a long while as part of a project we've started calling a DRA1 Remaster.
I've been away for a bit, but this is an art piece I've been working on for a very long time and which I drew for the title screen. It's pretty much a redraw of the original title screen made by Linuj. (see below for a full alt and the other title screens this game has had prior) I drew the new character art and made the new bg/other assets from scratch, with the exception of the logo, which was designed by weez/houndsofdenial)
Since things are getting closer and closer to completion, and there's been a bit more shown off/shared lately, it seemed like the right time to talk about it here. I might explain more about the project in a later post if people are interested, but if you haven't heard about it, the goal is to create a more complete and accurate English translation for the original release than is currently available. There are some other additions/goals as well (such as QoL changes, fixes, and so on) as well. When done, the game will be fully playable in English from ftes to fluff dialogue to CGs to trial minigames like Hangman's Gambit.
The project is still in progress right now, but if you're interested, check out Ink's Youtube channel. Though nothing playable has been publicly released yet, Ink has already started creating a playlist of everyone's retranslated FTEs over there. Who knows, you could find out something new about your favorite character thanks to errors/mistranslations being corrected.
I'll go into a little more detail about the piece + show the alts below the cut.
Danganronpa Another 1 has actually had multiple title screens up to this point.
The one most English-speaking fans are probably most familiar with is this one made by Zephrium. (Zeph was single-handedly responsible for the build most english-speaking fans got into the series with ofc)
It uses the HD sprites, and presumably all the other assets were edited or made by Zeph. It has a brighter tone and features Hope's Peak Academy in the background.
However, the game's original features art drawn by linuj specifically for the title screen. If you've never seen footage of/played the Korean release, you might not know about it.
It actually has a similar vibe to the one used in DR1/DR: Trigger Happy Havoc. That title screen uses black for the logo and has more of a blue hue, so it's a bit reversed which I find neat.
A long while back, when I was still daydreaming about doing translations myself somehow, I looked through a lot of the original images and sprites used in the Korean release and this title screen really stuck with me... After I connected with Ink and started helping out, I definitely still wanted to see an English version this title screen used in the remaster. After volunteering to work on the title screen and credits images, I felt a bit stumped by the title screen for a long time...
I guess when it's something you know will be the first impression people get when they open the game, it feels important to get it right.
I knew that going in, and to be frank, that's part of why I wanted to do the title haha. It felt and still does feel like a big contribution and it's still a little surreal knowing art I drew is gonna end up on the title screen of a game, especially DRA1...?
I think that feeling is part of why, when I was sitting in front of my computer, redoing and editing to make an English version of that original title screen, that something kinda clicked in my brain... What if I drew new art?
I don't think I would have had the confidence to try and take this on if I hadn't done that Yuki omake edit somewhat recently. (which. tbh in retrospect compared to this is a lot worse LOL and less accurate) (consider it a stepping stone haha) But it was definitely still a beast to take on for me because of how high my standards were for it and the fact that I was trying to replicate Linuj's art style, which I've not really done before.
But in the end, (and after sitting with it for a long time to make sure I didn't have any weird things or errors I hadn't noticed before finalizing lol) I ended up really proud of it...
I think I captured the style fairly well, and my confidence might have been boosted a bit at somehow managing to draw and finish this. (I couldn't resist making their hair 'fluffier' in a way that's closer to my own style though haha)
Anyways, I wanted to share my thoughts on this so I can look back on them later. If you've read all this, thanks! I know things have been a bit quieter than usual, I've been a bit overtaken with other things.

Hey there! I would just like to say: your ability to write dialogue that both sounds realistic and perfectly matches the characters is an aspect of your writing that I salivate over; as an amateur writer myself, I aspire to have your grasp on the natural flow of humans talking.
Thank you so much!!! :D Characterization is a tricky thing to get right, because in a good story there’s so many things that influence the things they say, both who they’re talking to, current circumstances, and their own past around the subject. If you want my secret, it’s kinda an embarrassing one.

I’ve been doing rp incessantly since I was like 12. I don’t talk about it too much here but friends from twitter and stuff know how unwell ai am about them even today… Coming up with little guys and their stories, then tossing them in all sorts of situations is like training a muscle, requires more thought and might be weak at first but then becomes natural. Idk if that would be considered a recommendation, but it’s fun! You could also experiment with characters talking about random funny stuff/ jump straight to an intense moment because ye may find when the stakes are different, dialogue can get heavier and more expressive or the prose can take hold at the intense moment depending on the significance and all that stuff!!
Anyway I just woke up. this might not be that comprehensible, mb if so but yeah ty for the lovely ask!

Hiii….. I wanted to yap about butterfly effect and how much I love/appreciate your work since I have been rewatching SDRA2 again… and I am on chapter 4 and I got reminded of your amazing writing during it
I wanna just appreciate how DRA Yuki's breakdown during Day ∞ (4) gives me so much vibes to SDRA2 Yuki's breakdown in chapter 4. When SDRA2 Yuki obtained Teruya's gun, he goes "holy shit there's a gun in my hand… wait this is such a powerful object and I can kill Teruya for whats he has done to us." I just had a flashback to what happened in your work. It's kind of this thought where this might have happened in SDRA2 if SDRA2 Yuki decided to just go haywire and refuse to give it someone or Sora didnt manage to take it off him in time. Seeing DRA Yuki do something that SDRA2 Yuki could have done just makes me feel weirdly happy, its a parallel I enjoy, DRA Yuki isnt a total contrast to SDRA2 Yuki (which you know, he should be acting like the guy he is based on… so I get happy when he is acting like SDRA2 Yuki), and it reminds me of the Yuki I love (sdra2 yuki, I love him thats my <333)
I love when I go through your work and go "this could be a parallel to [subject]" and "this would be foreshadowing [subject]" It's something people dont talk about or do enough so whenever I see it, I just want to talk about it. Hell, maybe its not intentional all the time but I like it a lot.

The resemblance to SDRA2 Yuki with the gun thing was very much not coincidental… I remember writing butterfly effect initially, I was about half a month done with SDRA2 and half my original thought is “I should give Yuki a crashout. How can we get there”+”What if Yuki spoke tf up. Imagine how much things could change” and bam! I love SDRA2 Yuki a lot so there’s def parallels with ch4, especially him getting a brief rush of power when the game finally changes and he gets the chance to shoot down the captor who’s been basically tormenting them for days
In Beffect it’s similar, “I can finally do something!” That same rush of power after a period of strain and stress, only this time he’s gay, feeling extremely guilty for perceived failure in his intentions with rehabilitating kinjo, standing up for the first time after sleeping for 2-3 days, and absolutely DELIRIOUS with hunger. The moment Kinjo threatens them all, Yuki talks him down and then Kinjo nearly kills himself, it’s a massive breaking point that gives him both the power to do something and a noble reason for it. Maybe a crashout was inevitable…
A lot of the time I try to do parallels intentionally with the canon games. If you’ve ever heard of that ‘canon event’ thing, a situation that happens regardless of timeline, there are lots of those! Even with the changes, the same people still stole food. Eve with the changes, Kinjo still proposed his suicide plan, with different reasons behind them. There’s SDRA2’s Teruya’s will of ‘sacrificing himself in the ballroom’ shown in his actual actions here. The outfit swap after chapter 4 and the promise to carry on a legacy. Even more so in TAE, maybe! You’ve got an ugly gay guy threatening Mikako with a knife, an absent plot relevant blue man whose existence is constantly teased, rei’s screaming match/hatred with kinjo happening a game early, and then the entirety of kinjo’s posed redemption->regression-> redemption-> regression… there’s more inevitably but it’s been like half a year since I wrote the stuff i’m currently posting so, forgor tbh. Still it’s nice to see someone make the connection that I intended!!
Beffect Yuki is supposed to be like a fusion of DRA impostor yuki with some of SDRA2’s mental darkness/occasional snippy temperament. And the entire cast hates on him- but they’re actually justified to this time!!
