Are barbari-ants often submerged in water? Because they have barnacles growing on them, which while incredibly resilient to constantly changing environments (there’s a whole gene that helps with this apparently) still filter feed in the water.

Also you see barnacles on the barbari-ants and the rocks(?) sticking out of the water, but not on the walls of Newtopia. Does this imply they’re constantly cleaning the walls of Newtopia for barnacles? Or is there something about the walls that prevents them from growing there? And if the former is true, I can kind of see why Newtopia never got around to fixing its sewer systems and famous bridges.
