Katanas are underpowered in patch 4.1
That’s it. I’m sick of all this “crit/SkS on the primal weapon” bullshit that’s going on in XIV right now. Katanas deserve better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I’m talking about. I myself bought a genuine katana off the Kugane market board for 2,400,000 koku (that’s about 2000 gil) and have been practicing with it for almost four months. I can even top dps charts with my katana.
Hingan blacksmiths grind out entire levels on katanas, and can spend an entire job questline making them.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as Eorzean swords, and thrice as hard for that matter. Anything a greatsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect an Ishgardian banneret knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why the Garlean empire never bothered invading Hingashi? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in the battle for Doma Castle, Garlean viceroys targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that Hydaelyn has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in patch 4.1 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:
(item level 335 two-handed weapon)
98 weapon damage, +293 Strength, +308 Vitality
+270 Direct Hit, +270 Determination
Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in cutscenes, don't you think?
tl;dr = Katanas need to do more dps in The Legend Returns, see my new stat block.
