ahhhh i wish i had a good renouncement verse prompt other than maybe something about how lwj and wwx got engaged? like the actual conversation between them/their matchmakers? (bonus points for lwjâs pov for the extra pining)
âWei Wuxian,â Jiang Cheng says over breakfast one morning, not long after his return from the Jinlintai. âHave you ever thought about getting married?â
Wei Wuxian puts down his porridge spoon and stares at him. The subject of marriage is one neither of them have broached since they were in their teens; Wei Wuxian never paid much attention to women in that way, even though he was a notorious flirt before the war, and Jiang Cheng has not yet wed despite his filial duty to continue the Yunmeng Jiang line. Furthermore, Wei Wuxian might be young and attractive (younger and more attractive than Jiang Cheng, at least) but he is still the Yiling Patriarch, and that fact precludes him from being seen as a potential marriage candidate by the most of the cultivation world.
(Unless someone wants to marry him as a last resort, or something along those lines. He wonders what kind of girl would have him as her last resort--perhaps the daughter of a would-be demonic cultivator? Or some long-lost connexion of the Wens, who wants to thank him for protecting her kindred by becoming his wife?)
âUm,â Wei Wuxian replies, trying to sound intelligent: or at least as intelligent as he can, for someone whose clothes are covered with spilled jujube congee. âNot since before the war. Why do you ask?â
âLan Wangjiâs in trouble,â his brother says bluntly. âHe only just ascended as Chief Cultivator, and every subsidiary clan from Moling to Changlun is accusing him of giving him unjust favor to Yunmeng Jiang.â
Wei Wuxianâs blood runs cold. âWhat?â
âHeâs passed every single law you proposed in the last three months,â Jiang Cheng grumbles. âEvery measure and new schooling reform--Wei Wuxian, you do understand how that looks, donât you? No one sees it as the Chief Cultivator keeping council with a close friend. You were in your capacity as Jiang-zongzhu when the last law went through, so everyone sees it as collusion with Yunmeng Jiang. Hanguang-jun has to keep up the image of impartiality, and the two of you just went and destroyed it.â
âWhat does that have to do with marriage?â Wei Wuxian demands. âIâll keep the rest of the changes we discussed for the fall conference, so you donât have to worry about it.â
But then a sickening realization washes over him, and he drops his spoon in sheer horror as he leaps to his feet. âAre you marrying me to someone outside Jiangshi so that the trouble passes to them?â he says hotly, while Xiao-Yu reaches up and clings to his neck in distress. âThatâs beneath you, Jiang Cheng, even if itâs going to--â
âNo,â Jiang Cheng grinds out, through clenched teeth. âSit down. Iâm not marrying you off to another clan. Not like that, anyway, and not if you donât want to.â
âThen what do you mean?â Wei Wuxian snaps, so shaken at the thought of marrying for this that he thinks he might faint. âIf youâre not sending me off to the first minor sect that will have me, what are you doing? What if they suffer because of my association with Lan Zhan, ah? Have you even thought about that?â
âItâs not that either!â Jiang Cheng shouts back, before making a visible effort to calm himself. âLook, Zewu-jun and I have thought it all through. You want to keep reforming the sects and honoring that vow you made with Lan Wangji, right?â
Wei Wuxian gives him a suspicious glare. âYes, I do.â
âAnd youâll need his support as Chief Cultivator to reach your goals, wonât you?â
Wei Wuxian narrows his eyes. âI suppose.â
âThen doesnât it make sense for you to marry him?â his brother says patiently. âIf you were his husband, you could do whatever you liked without worrying about how it would reflect on Yunmeng Jiang. You could be with Lan Sizhui without worrying about leaving us--and I know thatâs why you havenât left so far, so donât bother lying to me. And you could come back to stay here as often as you liked, too.â
âYou want me to marry Lan Zhan?â Wei Wuxianâs heart skips a beat. âI--Jiang Cheng, weâre both men!â
Jiang Cheng shrugs. âSo?â
âHeâll want his own children if he marries!â he protests. âWhat would be the use of marrying me?â
âHeâll keep his position as Excellency, for one,â his brother warns. âAnd no one can afford another political upheaval just now, Wei Wuxian. Least of all A-Ling.â
âLook, all you have to do is go through the bows and live with him for at least a few months out of the year. And if you two are unhappy together, we can always annul the marriage.â
Ah, Wei Wuxian thinks, biting back a crazed laugh as Jiang Cheng brings out several very official-looking letters from Lan Xichen and shoves them under his nose. This is really going to happen, isnât it?
Lan Xichen clears his throat. âI have just received a letter from Jiang-zongzhu, offering you Wei-gongziâs hand in marriage. I assume I can write back to him to set up a matchmakerâs meeting?â
