Fic rec! 36K Batman fic, featuring League!Tim

Summary: The prisoner is calmer than Tim was expecting. He says that he is Tim’s big brother. He says that they didn’t leave Tim to die.

Comments: Tim’s got amenisa, but what he does remember is being abandoned in the desert and oh does Ra’s take advantage of it. So what if the new prisoners say Tim is their brother? He doesn’t believe they actually care, since they left him there. And then it gets worse when the Bats save him but…they honestly don’t treat him better than Ra’s. He’s stuck in a cell, has no privacy. They’re nice and they try but Tim’s just comparing between two different styles of jailers. 

What I loved about this is how there’s no magic solution. Tim doesn’t just get his memory back. He doesn’t change his mind on Ra’s (he was aware that Ra’s wasn’t kind and used him). He changes his mind about the Bats, slowly, and Cass is so good about throwing his inner thoughts at his face. This is a slippery Tim who wants out, and there’s no perfect way to keep him. He’s got to choose to stay.

(it's Wei Wuxian. He's the fairy godmother) Part 4 [Masterpost]

Wei Wuxian waits until the evening to bring up the issue of the second missing cultivator. He’s not used to waiting, but he exercises restraint in this instance for three reasons: first, he’s half-sure that this second cultivator is the loved one that died, and he wants to give Lan Zhan some more time before he brings it up. Second, Lan Zhan is still sulking (but like, austerely) because Wei Wuxian disappeared about half of the books in his collection in an attempt to prevent Lan Zhan from reading the future, or the past that he had no knowledge of in his own time. Third, Wei Wuxian hopes that by returning with the gift of new robes, Lan Zhan will forgive him for his tresspasses against the noble pursuit of knowledge. 

It is with this vain hope that Wei Wuxian appears at his front door. He enters his house like a normal human person would, except for the part where the door opens by itself because Wei Wuxian’s arms are piled high with robes. 

“Lan Zhaaan,” Wei Wuxian sings. “I come bearing gifts!”

  Lan Zhan glances up from the book he was reading and manages to look unimpressed and uninterested with one arched look. “Hm.” He returns his attention to his book.

Wei Wuxian knows that Lan Zhan is just messing with him at this point but that doesn’t stop him from being offended. “Hey! It wouldn’t hurt you to show a little appreciation, you know. I’ll have you know that these robes cost me white jade and pure gold to acquire!”

“Mm.” Lan Zhan continues to ignore him. This simply will not do.

Wei Wuxian sets the robes down on the table and scoots next to Lan Zhan. He leans in and for extra effect puts his mouth right by Lan Zhan’s ear. “Lan Zhaaan.”

Lan Zhan turns his head so he can look Wei Wuxian directly in his eyes and–is that a silencing spell? On Wei Wuxian? Okay, now he’s just asking for it. Wei Wuxian vanishes the book Lan Zhan is trying so very hard to read. Lan Zhan stops breathing. A single hair falls out of place. He’s positively quivering in outrage. Wei Wuxian rolls his eyes when Lan Zhan turns his absolutely outraged expression on him, and is about to say you started it before he remembers he’s not supposed to be able to speak. 

“Mm mm!” Wei Wuxian gestures at his mouth.

Lan Zhan narrows his eyes, but raises his right hand and removes the silencing spell. In return, Wei Wuxian brings his book back, but places his hand over the cover before Lan Zhan can take it from him. Lan Zhan folds his hands in his lap and fixes an “I’m barely tolerating you” glare in Wei Wuxian’s direction. 

“I have a serious question,” Wei Wuxian says. “The people in Caiyi say there are two missing cultivators and you’re one of them. Who is the second?”

For the briefest moment, that pure, raw pain lights up Lan Zhan’s golden eyes. Then a shadow shutters across his stoic face and without missing a beat he casts a second silencing spell on Wei Wuxian. He rises with all the dignity of an insulted swan and brushes past Wei Wuxian, quite rudely, on his way out the front door.

Wei Wuxian shoots to his feet. “Hey! Lan Zhan! Where are you going?” 

“I do not wish to speak of it,” his terrible client says stiffly.

“Lan Zhan! I gotta know, I am your fai–”

“You are my nothing.” All of a sudden Lan Zhan spins on his heel and stares Wei Wuxian down, white robes all aflutter. “I do not know you. You are nothing to me!”

And with that uncharacteristic note of exclamation in his voice, he whirls around and stalks away. Wei Wuxian could, with no effort at all, pursue a dozen unethical methods to force Lan Zhan to confess whatever secret he is hiding. He could also choose between dozens of spying methods just in case Lan Zhan is in the mood to talk to himself. For Wei Wuxian’s entire existence he and every other fairy godmother has had the power to split open the heavenly Lotus Pier and flood the entire world. He will not start abusing his power now.

Wei Wuxian tends to exaggerate, but it is the plain, factual truth that he has never in his entire career had a ruder or more difficult client than Lan Wangji. All of his clients are worthy. He knows that from the moment he is summoned to their side. Many he meets in moments of great emotional distress. Yet never has he hosted a client who insulted, silenced and ignored him in his own home. The audacity! The sheer unparalleled nerve! If Wei Wuxian were not a dedicated fairy godmother, he would simply send Lan Wangji home. However, it is neither in his nature nor in his job description to give up. 

After Lan Zhan flounces off to sulk, Wei Wuxian plot his next move. Actually, first he sulks a little himself–he may not be human, but he still has emotional needs!–by going to Jiang Yanli’s residence and complaining for a good two hours about his new client. Then, after reviewing his options, he makes the risky decision to visit the family in person.

The Cloud Recesses is dreaming deeply when Wei Wuxian arrives. Everyone, from the sect leader to the lowest ranked servant, sleeps in their quarters. Wind whispers in the dark, and the trees shush it in return. Even the birds keep quiet. All this Wei Wuxian knows in the same way he knows he can summon a storm with a wave of his hand, for he appears not at the gate but inside the personal quarters of the sect leader. 

He arrives, as he planned, at exactly the right time. The sect leader has returned from his activities and prepared for bed, but has not yet gone to sleep. Wei Wuxian senses the presence of powerful spiritual weapons in another room–a sword and a zither, if he’s not mistaken, and he never is–but the man before him is unarmed, dressed in only inner robes, and about to remove his forehead ribbon. He is also, Wei Wuxian notes, far too young. Of course those goddamn cultivators never seem to visually age, but Wei Wuxian will eat his own sock if this man is over thirty years old. Which means that Wei Wuxian’s crows fed him old information, because this sect leader cannot be the father of Lan Zhan, he must be the older brother, the firstborn son.

“Sect Leader Lan.” Wei Wuxian blows sparks onto a few candles as he speaks so that the sect leader can see him too. It wouldn’t do for their conversation to be held with one party in the dark. “I apologize for intruding on your personal quarters. We have important matters to discuss.”

See? He can totally be formal if he wants to.

Sect Leader Lan’s face blisters into outrage red in total silence. Just when Wei Wuxian thinks he has shocked the man senseless, he replies in a carefully precise tone that lacks his little brother’s bite. “Yiling Patriarch. I can forgive this small discourtesy in light of your more heinous crimes.”

Oh, this man hates his guts. 

Wei Wuxian internally applauds the insulting greeting for its choice of wording, but his tone lacks conviction. Perhaps because of the time of night, or perhaps because his studiously noble air hides a deep terror. Given this fear, Wei Wuxian chooses not to reveal his identity as a fairy godmother. He will learn more from a man who hates and fears this Yiling Patriarch Wei Wuxian so closely resembles than from a man facing a stranger in his private rooms.

“Fantastic.” Wei Wuxian strolls deeper into the man’s quarters and finds a table in another room. He plonks himself down on one side and waits for the sect leader to follow his example before continuing. “Let’s talk about your little brother.”

“Yes,” Sect Leader Lan agrees, then follows up with absolutely nothing else.

“Soooo.” Wei Wuxian drums his fingers on the table. Since it’s apparently his job to lead the conversation, he must decide how to approach it. “Your sect is searching for him.”

A question disguised as a statement. When Wei Wuxian pauses for long enough, Sect Leader Lan nods sharply.

“He seemed…unhappy here.” Another question disguised as a statement.

“Gusu Lan has thousands of cultivators to its name,” Sect Leader Lan informs him abruptly. “Our library still maintains the largest collection of cultivation scrolls, and our musical cultivation remains unparalleled.”

“Am I…being threatened?” Wei Wuxian wonders out loud. 

Sect Leader Lan sneers at him. The effect is dampened by the prominent flush that still lingers, and the wide-eyed look of desperation. “You have bypassed our wards and entered my residence without anyone the wiser. I would not insult your skill by summoning the night watch, Yiling Patriarch.”

Flummoxing, Wei Wuxian says, “then, what gives?”

“You lack resources,” Sect Leader Lan snaps impatiently.

“Wait, so you’re offering all that to me?” Wei Wuxian scratches his nose, totally befuddled. “What do you want in return?”

Sect Leader Lan reddens further. “It is not within my power as sect leader to offer our precious artefacts without consultation. However. It is well-known that my little brother is a peerless cultivator and would be a valuable asset to any sect.”

“So what?” Wei Wuxian narrows his eyes. This man is not convincing him that Lan Zhan has loved ones in the Cloud Recesses that care sincerely for his well-being. “What are you suggesting?”

“What are you suggesting?” Sect Leader Lan retorts un-diplomatically. “You broke into my personal quarters for a reason, no? You wanted to talk about my little brother. I am willing to bargain fairly with you. Yet you lack even the decency to prove that he is alive!”

This is all good information. Theoretically, that is. Once Wei Wuxian can parse through this emotional wreck of a conversation he can sort out exactly what sort of person Sect Leader Lan is and what that means about Lan Zhan’s home. Until then, he’s left reeling and speechless.

“Uh, he’s alive. Alive and terrorizing my library.”

But only for a moment. He is Wei Wuxian, after all.

Despite Sect Leader Lan holding himself taut as a drawn bowstring, his shoulders shudder. “Thank you.” He blinks rapidly. “I wish to see that he is well for myself. Name your conditions.”

“Woah, woah.” Wei Wuxian holds up a hand. “I gotta ask him first.” It seems cruel to mention that Lan Zhan removed his forehead ribbon and renounced his sect. “I dunno if he’d appreciate that.”

“Tell me what you want in return,” Sect Leader Lan insists. “I give you my word that I will adhere to the terms of our agreement.”

Wei Wuxian throws his arms up. “I can’t just take you to my home! You’re not supposed to go there, and also, I dunno if Lan Zhan wants to see you, okay? I’m sorry!”

“At least let me send a letter,” the sect leader cries in tones of open desperation. “Or let him send me a letter. What will it cost? What do you want? Just tell me what you want, Wei Wuxian!”

“Okay, okay, I’ll ask! Calm down!” Wei Wuxian lowers his hands in an appeasing motion. “But no promises.” Sensing that he will learn nothing else from this desperate man, he vanishes on the spot.

It is only after Wei Wuxian has paced down the infinite boardwalks of his heavenly home, skipping stones over the lotus-filled waters, that he realizes Sect Leader Lan addressed him by his real name.

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

K - Actually! For a fandom way back, Rurouni Kenshin, wherein the main character has a vow not to kill. The whole premise I came up with was "...okay. So what would I have to do to make him willfully break that promise? How much of his life would I have to destroy first? Whose lives would I put on the line? Who would die?" The answer: most of the main cast, actually. It was a very dark idea with an enemy that would methodically go about shredding Kenshin's sanity and morals so that he would, in fact, become just a little murderous. (In the end, too dark for me to write more than a page-- I love reading dark, but unless it's a short one shot I need me a happy ending, rofl. There was none in sight for this one.)

U - I have a lot of favourites so I'm just gonna share three fic writers I have directly subbed:

Antebunny: First stumbled across in The Untamed fandom, an excellent writer who writes Wei Ying as extremely badass but not invulnerable, characterisation perfect, and writing beautiful enough I will occasionally see their name turn up in my inbox with a completely different fandom I don't follow and I'll be like "okay, let's check it out anyway". Highly recommended!

Mad and Thick as Thieves: I've mentioned this author before, introduced to me via my beta's rec list with a one shot possessed!Leo fic which was great, and they write a lot of one shots (and two- or three-shots) that are a great punch to the emotions, excellent action/adventure/side of horror/emotional fam feels!

paperxcrowns (or @crows-murder on Tumblr): Look, if my first introduction to an author is a fic where an amnesiac Leo wakes up handcuffed to a lab table and proceeds to badass himself across New York on a not-so-merry cat and mouse survival chase, I've imprinted on them for life, I don't make the rules. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Basically, RedHood!Jason tries to get Tim to quit being Robin by trapping him in small spaces, not realizing that A, Jack Drake shuts Tim in a closet regularly as punishment, and B, Tim is ENTIRELY FERAL and will only quit "If Jason himself came back from the dead and asked me to." Jason takes him up on this; shenanigans ensue. Fantastic for many reasons, not the least being a delicious mix of hilarity and hurt/comfort. The "third chapter" is a second separate fic addressing Tim blaming Lazarus Pit madness for Jason's Red Hood actions despite "Lazarus Pit madness" not being a thing in-fic-universe. Delicious.
