kinds of books i think we can probably definitely stop writing now:

japanese cosy fiction about a bookshop or a library or a cafe or a convenience store or a stationery shop. sometimes magical. always a cat on the cover even when there's no cat in the book. called something like 'the morisaki cat cafe' and they give you a coffee which fixes ur soul or something. no plot at all, obviously.

feminist/queer retellings. of anything ever but mainly greek myths. usually just means its the same myth but from the point of view of the woman this time.

misanthropic cynical woman in the big city fiction. possibly called something like 'everything's fine' or 'so happy these days' and the cover is either a classic painting of an unhappy woman or a picture of a woman facedown on a sofa. she's disillusioned and lethargic, probably masturbates in the book at least once. lots of performance art.

'female rage' or 'weird girl' lit. sometimes crosses over with misanthropic woman lit. kind of magical realism but the girl might turn into a dog or have sex with a tree or be a cannibal or a serial killer to represent her relationship with motherhood or something. under no circumstances can it actually be weird. a book that usually could've just been a pinterest board.

Okay hear me out! I thought Mary at first for M— too but I've found a better one. Because she's not the mother of Jesus, but she almost was.

So Marceline / Marcy would be almost-Mary, but not quite, and would have all the same cadence as Mercymorn / Mercy (and John does hate changing any more than he has to). But also for a bunch of other reasons, like man, there's SO MUCH...

A— I flop around on tbh. I've considered Adam (but do think that'd make John saying "she was my Adam" a little stranger), Andrew, Andreas, Addison (which comes from "Adam's son" and is technically unisex! but also especially feminine in NZ. but also he could be trans, why not), and Anthony. I love the idea though of him having a name that just means "man" (especially if I'm right about Marceline, which also ultimately comes from "man" but as a feminine form could be taken as "woman") and A— Junior then being Alex(ander), meaning "defender of men."

GABRIEL / GABE THOUGH YEAH 10,000%, it works really well and I've been fond of that one for so long.

ALSO nothing short of a canon reveal will convince me Cassiopeia wasn't still Cassy but short for Cassandra. She told John over and over and he should have listened smh.

third off, i also flop around on A___, i mostly picked adam because, like you said, having the first man be named Man is just too Tamsynian to resist. andrew could also work (one of the first disciples). that also feels right bc john 1:40-42 (obv i googled this okay) quotes as follows: andrew, simon peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, 'We have found the Messiah' (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus." like fucking Hellloooo. i'm still leaning Adam for humor value tbh but that's just soooo on the nose. also i thought simon and peter? were different people? lol #bible moments.

fourth off, fucking looove your deep dive post on marceline and am almost swayed by the martyr homestuck number death thing. bc what the fuck. awesome. but i still disagree! here's why:

one, i would bet real dollars tammuir has seen adventure time, and therefore would not use marceline vampire queen as her blorbo name even conceptually.

two, Mercy pre-res is giving failed catholic. i can't elaborate, it's just the way she is. there simply aren't catholics named marceline*, and there are one billion catholics named mary. statistically. those are the stats. also based on no textual evidence and just vibes, i do think the 'mercy' part is a sick inside joke jod has with himself, or possibly it's just because it sounds good. Her name was originally Maymorn (NZ train station, lol) and flipping may to mercy just feels so fuck-you to me.

three, most importantly because i should have clarified in the original post: as much as i love how the symbolism lines up (that reproduction shit just cannot be ignored), i am not thinking of mary, christ's mother. i am thinking of mary magdalene. christ's least-known disciple*, the first apostle*, witness to his crucifixion*, burial*, and was the first person* to discover that Jesus' tomb was empty. she's also mentioned a lot in the book of john. she could be magda, even, if we want to go an eastern european/polish catholic route, which would be sick as shit. mercymorn, magdalene. same syllables, same stress, even. my third eye? open.
