Xena’s amazing costumes.
I loved Xena so much when I was young and tbh it’s astounding it took me til adulthood to figure out I liked girls

so I read the article and the story is both less and more insane than it sounds.
basically, there's been an ants' nest near a vent shaft of this abandoned Soviet bunker for decades. the nest spilled over into the bunker itself at some point once it was abandoned and there was no way for the ants to make their way back up to the nest, no queen but a constant supply of new colony members raining down from above, and no source of food in the bunker other than the corpses of their fellow ants.
fast forward to some scientists looking for bats that stumble on what's basically a post-apocalyptic ant society. they go "holy fuck" start studying, and observe that, all things considered, the ants still pretty much act like regular ants doing regular ant things.
fast forward some more, and the scientists feel like they have enough data from observing the colony as-is, so they decide to try an experiment. they put a little walkway between the bunker colony and the og colony in the vent shaft so the bunker colony members have the option of leaving and rejoining the og colony.
spoiler alert: every single ant in the bunker immediately nopes the fuck back to the colony in the vent shaft. within days the bunker is completely empty. the scientists leave the walkway in place so when more ants inevitably fall back down the vent shaft they can just climb back up instead of starting up the cycle anew.
tl;dr it's not "oh noes evil ants are on a rampage", it's "ants forced into a horrible situation to survive get to go home"
everyone in the crab bucket just wants to go home
I was aware there were multiple Alexandrias, but I didn't know there were that many
The guy whose whole deal was not knowing when it's enough didn't think he had named enough cities after himself.
(Besides Alexandria in Egypt, at least another retained its name: Alexandria Arachosia -> Al-Iskandar -> Skandar -> Kandahar)
((There's also an Alexandria in Italy, but that one's named after a Medieval pope))
Still thinking about this post. When I started to hit a stride designing Wizard War, which involved some significant research into playing cards and their history, I had like a month where I just saw Cards in a different light
I kept looking at things like driver's licenses, social security cards, business cards, etc in the same way as playing cards or tarot cards, like, we sure do love putting numbers and symbols on little slips of paper or plastic and defining rules around them
Your official identity in the eyes of a state is a card that references documents that exist elsewhere. At the time, I had lost my driver's license in a state different from the one that issued it, and just really acutely felt the loss of access that came with not holding this particular card
I kinda felt like I was simultaneously going insane and circling some kinda breakthrough. Anyway this post makes me feel seen
If only there were some sort of facility where teenagers could be taught new skills.
Anyway, here's a helpful diagram. When I was hit on the temple this was one of the harder things I had to reteach myself. Don't be shamed into not asking questions, and it's alright if it takes you a while to figure it out. Don't let someone make you feel bad for learning new things, or relearning old ones.
Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to teach yourself. YouTube is a valid option.
yeah okay ill reblog that :]

You're right and you should say it.

I'm so fucking sick of seeing this picture used as an example of how ugly the US is:
This is a random exit on what appears to be a major highway route. This does not exist to look pretty. It does not exist to be walkable, or enjoyable to wander around. It exists so that truckers and people on road trips and people coming home from their shifts can stop for food and services. It's like complaining about the aesthetics of a water heater.
"But every city in the US looks like that!!!"
Shut uppppppp
We DO actually build lively, walkable towns sometimes??? If you're going to compare the aesthetics of the US to Europe or whatever, you should compare pretty towns to pretty towns instead of acting like it all sucks just because suburban Texas doesn't look like Florence.
Like I'm sorry the highly utilitarian roadside stops along American highways are not visually appealing enough to you, but they have a purpose, and you're being obtuse by ignoring that. And also, "I hate where I live because it's not pretty or walkable enough for me" is not a uniquely American feeling. You just live in an area that doesn't suit you. That doesn't mean our towns are all horrible or that the United States is super ugly, come on now.
