VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT)  PT.4 At the end of the week, we have transformed our soft cell with our talks and discussions printed on papers which were laid & aggregated on floor and cubes in a way that leads our eyes to the main video that I have written about in my last post. First two photographs above showing our exhibition area. In the Pavillion of Turkey, as the general theme, the selected participantsâ faces are projected on floors and to the fabrics hanging from the ceiling. I have made this collage that accentuates the juxtaposition of our final work with the projected faces. And the last photograph shows the amazing team. This was an amazing experience. I tried to summarize what we have done both for myself to re-capture this week with a really high tempo and for who might be interested in an alternative way of exploring the Biennale and the city of Venice. Thank you for reading and see you soon with a new adventure. M.
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT)  PT.3.2 The teaser of the video that I have mentioned in the previous post. The video is online on the âvardiya.onlineâ Instagram page and you can reach the other parts of the video from there. In addition to that, it is being exhibited in the Pavillion of Turkey, Arsenale, Venice till the end of Venice Biennale of Architecture 2018! I would like tomention our Vardiya(shift)Team: Maria Nassi, Onur ĂztĂŒrk, Tara Akdora, Eda Sarman, Merve Ćahin, Joana Graça, TuÄçe Ebrar UdĂŒl, Ali TıknazoÄlu, Sabit Engin, Ali GĂŒrer Workshop executers: Sophie Rzepecky & Yelta Köm
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT)  PT.3 As the final work for the Venice Times team, to be exhibited in our âsoft cellâ we wanted to show all of our products; photographs, newspapers, texts, a song, plays, discussion topics, interrogations on the city and biennale itself and on the notion of fiction. We devised a video for that made it look like a real tv news broadcast as if our fictional narration projected on the city of Venice. What I can tell specifically about this part of the video is that we tried to do a mapping of Venice that will show how the city is being interpreted by various actors throughout the time. Explorers, artists, politicians, students and tourists...many have visited many have created a âmapâ In this collage we brought all of them together, rather losing its function but showing how the idea of a city is heterogeneous and like patch-work and actually fictionalized in so many levels, by so many people in a long period of time. The video is online on the âvardiya.onlineâ Instagram page and you can reach the other parts of the video from there. In addition to that, it is being exhibited in the Pavillion of Turkey, Arsenale, Venice till the end of Venice Biennale of Architecture 2018!
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT) Â PT.2
Next challenge was to explore the Biennale area itself. We were mainly based in the Arsenale area where Pavillion of Turkey is located, but for this exercise, we went to Giardini where the main exhibition is also located. After strolling in the national exhibitions and the main exhibition handling the question of âfree spaceâ in their own ways, we were instructed to take part in various âplaysâ âinteractive exercisesâ ârole-playingsâ that altered our way of perception of movement, sound, time and their narration. What I show you in the images are my recordings trying to capture the sound and movement with photographs, sketches, and a text. After combining each of our 12 different ways of recordings, we started to create a fictional Venice Biennale form what we saw, hear and write.
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT)  PT.2 This biennale experience was unique not only because we had a chance to visit Venice, get to know other architecture and design students and produce together but also for getting to know many inspiring professionals. We had roundtable discussions and talks that opened new horizons for us to think about the term fiction and how it can be related to areas such a media, publishing, design and architecture. Now looking back, it is not hard to realize that a week in Venice Biennale of Architecture and in The Pavillion of Turkey with the Vardiya | The Shift team was so intense and pushing us to think and question everything non-stop. Since the general theme, we gathered around was free-space, I believed what we were doing and what other shifts would continue to do; transforming the space, handling various sides of architecture with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, exploring the city with the lessons taken from national exhibitions, creating this intense flow of information, inspiration, sounds and images, fit very well with the opened discussion topic of free-space.Â
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT) Â PT.2 is loading keywords: narration/limits/words/images/sounds/time/movement
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT) PT.1 As the first exercise relating to fiction, we were instructed to think of our earliest memories of personal fictions, tales etc. After that, we combined these stories with the stories of Venice or made-up stories about Venice in different times and in different contexts. The main aim is to show how narration could change our perspective on events, places, and people. Even sometimes it mixes with reality on a surreal level that they canât be distinguished. As a team (Ali GĂŒrer, Joana Graça and me (Merve Sahin)), we also tried to fictionalize the published work itself. How could we re-narrate the publication itself today? Does it really give any information? Or does events are even related? Does it give a message if we mix up all the conventional ways of publishing? etc...As a result, in our work, the conventional design of a newspaper is followed by a chaotic design. The more it gets chaotic the more the information in it becomes funnier and fake, graphics get worse, words are blocked and censored, images are tilted. In each story we created, we juxtaposed different eras, cultures, graphic styles, locations to bring up more questions about the ways of narrating and story telling.
VENICE TIMES | VARDIYA(THE SHIFT) Â PT.00
So, I have been to Venice Biennale of Architecture, National Pavilion of Turkey as a participant. To give a brief information about the theme of the National Pavilion of Turkey, I am quoting from the introduction of the curators: âVardiya / the Shift commits a program full of public events to turn Pavilion of Turkey into an open space for temporary accommodation, production, and encountering.â http://vardiya.iksv.org/hakkinda.php To begin with, there are many reasons why this biennale experience is unique. This year curator Kerem Piker and his team went with an unexpected proposal to invite architecture students from all over the world to meet, discuss and produce on various topics around the workshops changing with every âshiftâ I was there on the first shift to explore the notion of âfictionâ with various modes of representation. What we have done is keeping the fiction on main focus and relating it with the city and event we were in and with our ways of production of the information, visuals, and media. I intend to show these exercises and our team discussions in three main parts with the series of posts on this blog. I hope I could succeed in expressing our hard work and also the crazy fun we had here. Stay tuned in. .... Also, I want to mention the team. We were all together during the week and produced and discussed the material we had all together as well: Maria Nassi, Onur ĂztĂŒrk, Tara Akdora, Eda Sarman, Merve Ćahin, Joana Graça, TuÄçe Ebrar UdĂŒl, Ali TıknazoÄlu, Sabit Engin, Ali GĂŒrer and more social media links that you might wanna check out are here: https://www.instagram.com/vardiya.online/ http://vardiyaxpress.com/

'visual essay on death'
this set of photo/gif/drawings have started with an instant reaction as an architect/designer/citizenÂ
the emotional breakdown that I have experienced when I saw a demolition machine on top of the AKM building has made me feel as if that machine was tearing me apart.
it was such an iconic and triggering moment that I have produced this set of visuals that are standing instead of my words that is why I have called this trio my 'visual essay on death'Â
They are formed of 1 photograph that is zoomed-in, zoomed-out and cut to emphasize my different focus points and elements (with the repetition, framing, color change and digital manipulation)
For those couldn't follow this demolition and the story behind could look for with keywords such as Taksim meydanı Istanbul / AKM. This quick search would tell about the character and social memory/meaning behind this urban intervention in a public square
one of my obsessive note-taking sessions. I love to visualize what I hear spontaneously instead of taking notes. These are from a talk that I have attended on architectural press design
thinking on the notion of punctum on a chosen photography by the artist duo Birdhead. Basically, the process is based on the spontaneous thinking process and visual thinking of the allocations made from the reference photo to explain further what punctum is how can it be visualized
couldnât take my eyes from these details of the glass dome and the space/reflections/juxtapositions, bundestag, berlin
