Sleepy boys 💤
somehow it comes up that troy had a crush on shane and was going to ask for his number. and after troy gets ribbed by his teammates and ilya makes a big scene, shane is like, “well i never would’ve gone out with you lol.”
and troy smiles, “right, because you were with roz the whole time.”
“i mean, yes, but also because you and dallas kent spent years calling me and jj ‘rush hour’ and asking hayden if his wife was his beard to cover up his big gay relationship with me.”
the rest of the centaurs blink. harris puts his head in his hands and groans.
and troy’s like, “oh. right. sorry about that :/“
some amazing additions from the tags
It's heartbreaking to think how if Shane had realized that his initial draw to Ilya was in fact attraction, if he had known he was gay at that time he never would have approached him in that parking lot.
Something tragic in the idea that him being unaware of himself and his desires was the only way he was going to actually let himself want and to act on it.
In The Long Game, when Montreal turns on Shane, the main offender/worst of it comes from Drapeau, who is one of the team’s goalies.
I just realized that, in this scene from Episode 4 when Shane and the Metros win the cup, the player who kisses Shane on the cheek (based on the pads) is a goalie.
This is either an intentional nod or a really meaningful coincidence that the player who is seen celebrating with Shane and appreciating his contributions to their win could be the teammate that then ostracizes him for his relationship with Ilya. 😢
this is gonna sound bad at first but just hear me out, i honestly don't love the concept of the Perfect Woke Ottawa Team. like it's sweet and cute and but lowkey it seriously undermines like The Key theme of the series
the existence of the Perfectly Woke Puppy Paradise Farm Centaurs boils shane's entire struggle with his sexuality an issue of the People he surrounded himself with. it's perfectly fine to be a gay hockey player with the centaurs! maybe if he had been drafted to them he would have been able to come out earlier! no no the Real villains of this story are the Commissioner and the Voyageurs and without them everything is great!
which like–no. the real villain of this story is Hockey Culture! that's the whole point of shane's story, that his one true purpose in life, what he loves more than pretty much everything else in the world, fundamentally does not love him back unconditionally. that as long as he is true to himself he will disappoint the sport he has been praying at the altar to all his life.
i just hate this idea of all the denial and sacrifice he put himself through concluding on the point of "it wasn't the right team". like when ilya and him do play together on the centaurs i want it to still be hard in some way. if they are super woke i hope they really show the discrimination they face from the rest of the world. because like, shane and ilya's world should be inalterably changed by being outed, otherwise what was the whole point of everything? they tortured themselves for a decade nonsensically?
hands down my favourite bit of the long game is when ilya and shane have been outed and ilya goes to talk to his coach and wiebe just goes
Rapid Fire NHL Things for New Hollanov Fans to Know When Writing Hockey Fanfic
There is no handshake line at the end of regular season games
Equipment managers are the ones managing a players gear and equipment during a season. Players aren’t taking their gear bags home from practice every day and laying out their own gear at the rink. The team handles it and does laundry
WAGs don’t ever really wear player jerseys, they would wear a custom outfit with the number (think Taylor Swift) if they do at all
Fights are a regular part of hockey culture and unless someone gets seriously injured in a fight, you’re not gonna get in serious trouble for fighting
Players actually board the private team plane on the tarmac, the show just didn’t have the budget for that
When on road trips, players take the team bus from the airport to the hotel to the rink and so on. They’re not in charge of their own transportation
Captains don’t typically run practices and set drills, the coaching staff do
Players mostly do post game media in front of their stalls in the locker room, and two teams aren’t doing media at the same time in the same room after games
The locker room is actually open wooden stalls. It’s not a physical locker you shut.
When a player is mic’ed up, both teams are made aware of who has the hot mic
Playoffs structure can be confusing, but round one and two are in your conference, round three is a conference final, round four for the cup is east vs west
They are not getting bag skated every practice please stop putting that they are getting bag skated til they puke at every practice
Other hockey fans please add things!!
I feel like some people think the aquarium scene with Hayden and his kids is filler or not important but to me it’s SO important. To me, Hayden is a sort of foil for Shane in his personal life. In the book, he and Hayden are rookies together. They’re generally around the same age. Hayden progresses through a very “normal” personal life for an NHL player. He meets Jackie (at a club), they get married soon after, and they start having kids.
Shane isn’t doing any of that. He’s “stuck”. Because he hasn’t accepted his own sexuality, and even if he had, he wouldn’t be able to do those things in the way he would want (see Scott). While Hayden moves into that phase of life and settles down and starts a family, Shane gets left behind. In the show, I think they show this so beautifully in the aquarium scene. Hayden tries to set Shane up with Jackie’s friends, tries to question why he’s not joining him in that next part of his life.
Even more meaningful that this is in Episode 4 right before the tuna melt scene. Shane is shown exactly what he “should” be doing. So it’s no wonder that after that scene, he ends up trying to date Rose.
A Hockey PSA for HR Fic Authors
From your friendly neighborhood fic reader and lifelong hockey fan, these are the most common hockey mistakes I see in fics:
There are three 20-minute periods in hockey! The breaks between the periods are called intermissions. There is no “halftime” in hockey. Pls 😭
Shane or Ilya scoring several hat tricks in a season or scoring 4+ goals in one game - even with insanely good goal scorers this just doesn’t happen. A decent hockey player might get 2 hat tricks in his entire career. A really good player might get 1 in a season. Someone scoring more than 3 goals in one game is just not going to happen.
Calling a hockey game a “match”. You might hear a game referred to as a “matchup” like “the matchup between Boston and Montreal” but it’s a hockey game.
Not understanding hockey penalties. There are no red cards in hockey 😂. They can get a two minute minor penalty, a four minute double minor, a five minute major, or a ten minute game misconduct. You can Google what the penalties are and how many minutes each one is.
Having hockey games take place in the summer/outside of when the season is. NHL season runs October-April with pre-season games taking place in September and playoffs happening May & June.
I’m sure I’m forgetting something. And this is all for fun - whether the hockey is accurate isn’t important. But if you care about that sort of thing, here it is. If you have any questions or want a hockey-centric fic beta read feel free to message me!

PSA to my white friends and followers: In the wake of a phenomenally important guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin Trial, I’d like to remind you all that the fallout of this case will likely mean more police violence against our Black friends and neighbors, not less. Looking at the statistics in the weeks leading up to this verdict shows that this is already the case. Police in this country are angry that society is beginning to hold them accountable for their abusive actions, and they are looking for revenge. So if you see a cop interacting with a BIPOC, DO NOT walk away. Video record if you can (and as long as it doesn’t further jeopardize the safety of the BIPOC involved), but absolutely do not walk away. It is critical that we do our part and look out for people, and make cops think twice about abusing their powers of authority and near-immunity to murder citizens.
Adding to this that advance research on copwatching strategies, particularly ones employed locally, as laws can very from state to state, is going to be your friend if you try to do this. It’s easy to imagine yourself pulling out your phone and recording an interaction if you were to witness one, but there can be lot more intricacies than just taking a video. Would you know how to respond if an officer confronted you about your actions? Do you know how best to respect the rights and privacy of the individuals you’re intervening on the behalf of, and prevent the situation from becoming additionally traumatic?
If you’re interested in learning more to prepare yourself, so you can be as effective as possible if you witness a scenario that requires bystander intervention, here are some resources on copwatching to look over. I highly recommend reading over them several times and taking good notes – or anything else that will help you commit the contents to memory – because this stuff will escape you in an actual stressful scenario (signed, someone who has attended multiple copwatch trainings and still totally blanked on most of what I learned the one time I’ve directly confronted an officer)
For those local to the Minneapolis, where we’re very likely to see the highest amount of police retaliation in the days to come, the Twin Cities Worker’s Defense Alliance has a How to Copwatch manual, as well as a printable Know Your Rights zine
United Against Police Terror San Diego has a Copwatching Manual intended to be fairly broadly applicable to copwatchers in the US
The ACLU offers advice on copwatching in the form of Fighting Police Abuse: A Community Action Manual
WeCopwatch have a large variety of resources on copwatching and copwatchers rights’ on their site
A fair number of these resources are aimed at people interested in setting up regular copwatching patrols, but even for people primarily interested in being prepared in the instance of witnessing a scenario in which copwatching is necessary, it’s a good idea to do your homework and know how to be the most effective bystander you can. Knowing your rights and other important things to keep in mind will help you avoid being caught-off guard should you end up needing to record an interaction – or aggravating a situation, which is a real risk to consider. I also recommend looking up the specific laws relevant to your own area that these resources may or may not manage to cover.
