I highly suspect that the GO finale - which again, I shall simply not be watching - was actually, at least at one point or on some level, a well-intentioned atheist and sociopolitical read in the vein of "this system cannot be reformed." And I get that. But the reason it was ever interesting to me in the first place as a queer ex-Christian was because you had these two characters who DID live inside that system and were functioning metaphorically as two different sides of the same coin of surviving religious trauma. So you see, perhaps, how having those characters essentially choose SUICIDE, however altruistic that action, kind of fucking blows for those of us who were hoping that they would escape their abusive families of origin and CHOOSE to live happily ever after with all of their memories and shared history interact. Because in real life I can't wish away Christianity's existence or undo the harm of high control religion or shame-based morality. We have to overcome it with love. And on a storytelling level, erasing everything that made your characters interesting without giving them any real resolution and saying look, isn't this better?! is incredibly insulting and lazy.
And while I'm giving out bitchy opinions on this thing I haven't watched and won't because I value what it previously meant to me, I hope the senseless dolts in the fandom tag who are self-righteously proclaiming that THEY ALONE are literate enough to see when two characters love each other, even when they don't show any of that base, plebian onscreen physical affection, choke on their own spit. Read the room. No hug, no kiss, no I love you, and your immortal gays obligingly bury themselves? Fuck all the way off.
