in lieu of the unfortunate amount of things I've come to know about that TERF show on HBO against my will, I'm coming out of my woodwork to say fuck JKR and fuck the HP fandom for actively funding anti trans legislations and atop that anti trans rhetoric across the world. Trans people shouldn't be out begging for scraps to live a life of dignity and to be denied that right all because you can't get over a poorly written saga from when you were thirteen. Get. Over. It. For fuck's sake before more trans women and girls have to die. Your need for entertainment is never worth the lives of your fellow people.
marauders fans are so much worse than garden variety hp fans bc they've deluded themselves into having a superiority complex. "ackshually we don't support jkr and our fandom has queer & poc representation" girl...your fandom is the worst mass delusion since the dancing plague of 1518, your "representation" is a series of headcanons for characters who are little more than names in a series whose worldbuilding you continue to use in your art and whose existence has material consequences for trans people in the uk. you cannot headcanon your way out of supporting one of if not the most famous transphobe in the world. there are fantasy books by real life queer people and people of colour that will never get a fraction of of support that jkr does. read those instead and take a personality quiz oh my GOD
Yerin Ha and Luke Thompson
Tumblr's algorithm should be torn apart because why am I getting TERF blogs on my dashboard after explicitly and surely going through the #anti-jkr tag after the travesty that is the H**** P***** casting announcement?
God, Tumblr really isn't trans friendly huh.
So.. did Nancy ever get a chance to heal from Barb or must we take that one flash of a memory as Vecna is being axed as such????
also while weâre talking about how badly stranger things treats its queer characters, when are we going to actually discuss how theyâre handling robin and vickie? or, i should say, how theyâre not really handling them at all
robin and vickieâs relationship has been left very underdeveloped the entire two seasons itâs existed. vickie as a character was barely even present in the narrative until ep 6 despite how important almost every other straight charactersâ love interests have gotten to be, and her relationship with robin, which was developed almost entirely off-screen, has been used mostly to aid willâs self-acceptance arc. once again lesbians are sidelined in favor of telling the story of a gay man, and a story that isnât even particularly realistic or well-written for him! i am sick and tired!!!!
I hate how Robin ended up being that designated lesbian character playing therapist to a gay character. Sure, yes, I enjoyed Robin and Will's moments but it definitely at times felt like Robin's entire arc this season was to just be that therapist-person for Will. It didn't feel like genuine queer solidarity, it felt like a sapphic character who is reduced to that of comic relief/catharsis type, even after displaying the fact that she is much more than just that in the earlier seasons.
Honestly, I'd rather Robin never in a relationship to begin with, if this is the level of nuance we can expect. Vickie did not return for the epilogue. Robin comments something about "overbearing partners" and we're left to imagine Rovickie quietly broke it off off-screen.
She started out in S3 as a companion for Steve, then slowly began journeying on her own arc, displaying her capabilities in S4, only to be so suddenly reduced to .. whatever this was. It's so sad because though I had my own gripes with the cast growing bigger in S3, I was so excited for Robin. It is as if Vickie was just there to check a box - never meant to be fully explored or understood; rather the trajectory of their relationship was never panned out.
Stranger Things and the Cost of Corporate Storytelling.
Even though the Stranger Things finale hasnât aired yet, and is set to drop this New Yearâs Eve, one thing is already undeniable: the showâs quality has declined.
Whether thatâs because of rumors about leaked scripts, panic over fan service, or simple creative exhaustion is almost irrelevant at this point. What is obvious is the heavy hand of Netflix and late-stage capitalism, and how efficiently they hollow out art until it becomes content.
The Stranger Things fandom, especially Byler fans (shoutout to Byler Nation) produced some of the most thoughtful, layered, and emotionally literate analysis in the months leading up to this final season. And that wasnât accidental. For nearly a decade, Matt and Ross Duffer insisted that Stranger Things was a detail-driven show, one that rewarded close reading, emotional subtext, and narrative patience. Only for them, days before the finale, to turn around and claim that fans were âwatching a different show.â
That alone says everything.
Because the problem isnât that fans expected too much, itâs that the show trained them to. And then punished them for paying attention.
What we saw in volume two barely resembles the series that once trusted its audience. The writing is aggressively dumbed down. Characters are given constant, hollow epiphanies whose sole purpose is to explain the plot out loud, as if subtlety were a liability and viewers were incapable of basic inference. Emotional beats are flattened into exposition. Ambiguity is treated as a threat rather than a feature.
I mean, where is the subtext of political and social critique we used to see? Like the subtle commentary on the Reagan administration in the United States, or the reflection of the AIDS epidemic and how it affected the lives of the LGBTQ+ community during the 1980s, the very decade the show is set in, especially with an openly gay protagonist?
And what about couples like Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers, who once carried the weight of class dynamics within the American context, dynamics that added nuance and depth to their relationship, only for all of that to be erased in order to serve an emotional arc tailored for audience reaction?
And the question becomes unavoidable: have audiences really become this incapable or has corporate television simply decided that thinking is bad for retention metrics?
This is the streaming model at work. Stretch the story. Split the season. Delay resolution. Manufacture anxiety. Keep people subscribed. What gets lost in the process is coherence, trust, and meaning. Art is no longer allowed to breathe; it must sell.
Stranger Things isnât unique in this failure. Itâs just a particularly visible example of what happens when a show with a strong emotional core is slowly stripped of its humanity to maximize engagement. What remains isnât storytelling, itâs product.
And once art becomes product, the audience isnât meant to feel, reflect, or interpret. Theyâre meant to keep watching, to keep buying it.
If the finale succeeds, it wonât be because of the systems surrounding the show, but in spite of them. And if it fails, it wonât be because audiences âexpected too much,â but because corporate storytelling no longer allows space for risk, contradiction, or depth.
This isnât about one ship, one character, or one fandom.
Itâs about what happens when art is forced to serve algorithms instead of people, and how much weâre expected to accept before we stop calling it storytelling at all. Art IS and always will be political.
Why can't writers write women normally. As in. With the same care and thought put into their complexity as they do with their male characters. Why do all their writing skills suddenly go down the gutter when concluding women's story arcs.
mike was just a self-insert. what the duffers meant by "a show for outcasts" they meant awkward white guys with nerdy interests who couldn't talk to women. it was no wonder that the only girl mike had a chance with was a girl who was so closed off from society that she didn't know what she wanted. there was no way they were going to give mike a gay romance with will because they're straight incel men. that's part of why mike had no real personality. they needed to project onto him.
Am I the only one who found it weird, off-putting, and unnecessary when Hopper was talking El down from suicide (self-sacrifice, same thing) and used the fact that she might have a kid of her own one day as a reason for her to stay alive? El is a teenage girl who has not once expressed any desire to become a mother in the future. She is traumatized and has never had any agency in her life. She is also, I must repeat, a teenage girl. Why are we using becoming a mother as motivation to talk down a teenager from suicide? Why are we acting like this is something El wants and has always wanted? Why do male writers always reduce female charactersâ bodies to their ability to make babies? Women and girlsâ lives are not valuable because of their ability to have childrenâwe are inherently valuable no matter what our bodies may or may not be capable of, whether or not we want kids at all. Our lives have worth because they are ours.
so so normal about the older teens.. jonathan losing (?) argyle, nancy losing barb, steve and robin clinging on to each other after losing eddie and all of them in a weird little relationship with each other - like man, i feel so bad for the party, but i'm so glad the teens at least never got to separate. they'd lost a ton of their friends, had their identities tied so closely to the kids to the point where they assumed the role of a parent/guardian many, many times and to have them just y'know not have to lose each other for once is such a blessing tbh.
(fuckingggg hate how they removed vickie from the equation as if she's never existed. i'd like to believe rovickie is still going strong)
thinking about how in the lost sister episode, funshine says "kali saved us in here" (pointing to his head) "and in here" (pointing to his heart). kali took these people in and gave them a chance at healing and hope after everything they'd been through. she took people who had been hurt by others and discarded by society and said, "you still have worth." she gave them purpose. she made them believe they had a future worth living for. she gave them all family.
and now they're all gone, murdered in front of her. now, thanks to everything dr. kay and the military did to her (on top of everything else she's endured in her life), she doesn't even believe in any of that for herself anymore.
still standing by the fact kali's death was so unnecessarily evil - especially after the way the fandom and the showrunners had treated her. she and el should've gotten nancy's whole independence arc.
Not a big fan of how all those abused kids at hawkins lab ended up dead and none of them got a real chance to live a normal life ngl
