look, i didn’t just wake up one morning and made this post by letting a monkey type it for me. i am a classicist. i spent years studying these matters. there is no such thing as cultural appropriation in the ancient world. it is not a meaningful parameter. it is not how cultures work. cultural exchanges happen in all ancient and modern societies because no society exists in a void. but thanks for providing an example of what the post was talking about, i guess

thinking about a version of the aeneid where aeneas goes to the underworld as usual but it's odysseus who comes out

i mean think about it. there are traditions where odysseus goes to italy and even traditions where he is a co-founder of rome's ancestors. who's to say aeneas ever came out from the underworld? who's to say the wires didn't get crossed? who's to say they didn't switch places?

i mean. nobody recognized odysseus at first when he came home. yeah, yeah, athena's tricks and all- but if she can make odysseus into a beggar then she can make aeneas into odysseus. what side was that scar on? the right leg, right? or maybe the left. 20 years is a long time to remember. and it's not like both stories don't end in violence. aeneas has turnus to kill. no, no, not turnus, this is eurymachus. isn't it? wait, whose house is this? whose people are these? whose rage does he feel in his heart? did he need to kill all these people? did he need to kill the slaves? he must have or else he wouldn't have done it. this is what his dead father told him to do- no, wait, anchises isn't dead. anchises? laertes. he's not dead. the funeral shroud is just a precaution- takes damn years to weave these things. the echo of a ghostly voice in his head is incidental. besides, he has his son to worry about. was iulus always this tall? when did he start growing a beard, wispy and red? kids these days, they grow up so fast.
