How to start learning French
Hi! I’m basing this guide on this post that I wrote a while ago, and also this fantastic post by @frenchy-french. A lot of the resources that I use will also have been made by @frenchy-french (she’s a gem, honestly, bookmark her blog if you’re learning French).
I would recommend studying this amazing pronunciation guide by, you guessed it, @frenchy-french. Then, I would recommend that you start shadowing and speaking. Try shadowing (i.e. repeat what is being said after the speaker) a beginners podcast like FrenchPod101 (paid) or Coffee Break French (free).
You can try using an app to learn some basic vocabulary. Duolingo and Memrise are my personal favourites. You can also use Drops if you don’t want to translate vocabulary. Try using it daily (it’ll take at most 5 minutes a day).
Complete an online course or textbook. Here is an article with some recommendations for textbooks. Here is a link to a drive full of textbooks, where you will surely find something for French (credit to @salvadorbonaparte for providing this resource). As for online courses, here is a list of some places to find courses: Open Culture, Class central, Effective Language Learning and Loecson.
Make a native friend and start texting them. You can go on r/Language Exchange, or text them on HelloTalk or Tandem. You could also find a buddy on a language discord. Remember to be safe, and not reveal any private information. Look up words as you go, and try texting only in French the whole time. Start doing this as early as possible. Once you have become more confident texting and/or sending voice messages, try a phone call. You can also practice speaking using HiLokal.
Memorise some basic vocabulary and grammar. Really, the post I linked at the beginning by @frenchy-french is the best for this. For vocabulary, you can use flashcards (like Anki, Quizlet and Memrise). Also, try Kwiziq for grammar.
Immerse. For now, try listening to lots of music, and watch a bunch of fun YouTube videos (like the ones by Cyprien, and Montreaux Comedy). Also, use the language filter on AO3 to look up fanfiction in French. Switch your phone’s language to French, and follow a bunch of French people on social media.
Thanks for reading this post! I hope it was useful to you!
french resources masterpost
i don’t even know where to begin with french…i love learning languages so much, i really wish my parents had started me when i was younger. i started taking french in seventh grade but i really hope to spend a semester abroad in france & visit senegal when im older. however, french can get super crazy with accents and hard pronunciation and fancy vocab, which can get really confusing, so here’s a masterpost w all of the french resources i’ve gathered :)
where to start
duolingo aka the most amazing free language learning program ever
rosetta stone- i’ve heard really great things about this program, but it is not free
bonjour- this website is rlly helpful & even if you’re already in a french class like me, you can find lots of resources for when you’re confused :) plus it’s free!!
babbel- they have programs for beginners + advanced
grammar + spell check
bonpatron- grammer + spell check
languagetool- grammar + spell check
reverso- grammer + spellcheck
how to change the spellcheck language on word
dictionaries
collins
word reference (this is my personal favorite, i highly recommend it + it is so much better than google translate & much more reliable!!)
larousse
linternaute
linguee (this one is probably my second favorite)
you can get word reference (free!!) on the app store, as well as linguee (which i think is free as well??)
phonology
french vs english phonology

10 pronunciations you won’t learn in school
ok so i just found out the other day that if you’re on flashcards on quizlet & you press the little speaker icon it will say the word for you!! this has been super helpful on my auditory quizzes + generally getting a feel for the pronunciation of words. but i wouldn’t say it’s too reliable so definitely check out these other resources (link to quizlet)

maitre gims- rapper but he sings quite a bit in his songs
joyce jonathan- omg her songs are so cute please go listen
christophe mae-can we just talk about his song “tombe sous le charme” i love it + he sort of reminds me of jack johnson
vianney!!- guys “je te deteste” is my favorite song on my french playlist right now. the sophomore that sits next to me in our french class recommended him to me & i can’t stop listening
christine & the queens

savoirs
euronews
1jour1actu
l’humanite
multilingual books
some blogs (not on tumblr) in french + about french culture (frenchcrazy, i learn french, oui, c’est ca, french together, fluentfrenchnow)
my tips
definitely keep a vocab notebook where you can either paste vocab lists or write them in on your own
listen to french music. find your own favorite artists. and tell me, so i can put them in here. but seriously, go do it & get those phrases + pronunciations stuck in your head!!
making quizlets for vocab will benefit you more than just using someone else’s
find friends in your class to help (if you’re in highschool, upperclassmen are a blessing pls go ask them questions if you’re lost in class), the senior that sits next to me is really good at conjugating, and i’m pretty good at remembering vocab so we make a great team
find/join a study group!! the freshman girls in my french class made a group chat & we all send links to quizlets/other resources & help each other with homework 24/7
ask questions/do speaking exercises during class. trust me, you will benefit from it. plus, having your teacher correct you on your pronunciation during class is much less embarrassing than getting an F on that speaking test

hi everyone! i made a french masterpost about a year ago which can be found here, but it’s a little outdated and i don’t use some of the resources anymore. here is a new updated masterpost about how to learn french!
apps
duolingo is good to start out with, but don’t rely on it entirely. duolingo is more beneficial if you use it as a review rather than a learning resource.
memrise is amazing for any level of french!
drops is a really good vocabulary app. it exposes you to everyday vocabulary you may need while traveling to france. it’s also super aesthetic! it only allows you to use it for 5 minutes a day, but i find it perfect to use before i go to bed.
mango is offered free from libraries in the u.s. and canada. it teaches you with a conversation. this app is very practical and it helps with speaking skills. if you live outside of the u.s. message me and i can make you a free account.
mindsnacks is also a fantastic vocabulary app, but it doesn’t work with ios 11 and you have to pay $4.99 to unlock all the lessons. but if you can get it, it’s definitely worth it! the app forces you to remember all the vocab, and it pronounces everything for you very clearly.
writing/reading
write/read something every day in french! no matter what it is, it will greatly benefit your learning. try to use what you learn each day in your daily writing practice.
here is a website with french children’s books for free. it pronounces the words and offers an english translation which is great for beginners.
1jour1actu is good for A2-C1 learners. they have an app as well as a website.
for more advanced learners, i recommend lemonde.fr
there are several strategies for what to do when coming across a word you don’t know. i usually use a dictionary/google translate and highlight/write down the word i looked up, then review those words before i sleep (sometimes). the more exposure you get to words, the more familiar you will become. keep reading!
forvo is an amazing website where you can see how a word is pronounced by a native speaker. it’s a literal blessing to this earth.
grammar
it’s very important to keep a notebook for your french studies, because french grammar can get really crazy. review your notes weekly to retain the information!
pick a good textbook/workbook to take notes from. i personally used french for dummies. many free textbooks and workbooks can be found at this link, so you can choose which one you think will be best for you.
thoughtco is a good website for when you need help on a specific grammar topic. you can add some of their lessons to your notebook!
rocketlanguages is also good to start out with. same as mango, it’s free to anyone in the u.s. and canada with a library card. it’s good for conversation practice and grammar.
listening
my favorite place to go to for practice is youtube. check out this list of most popular french youtubers!
music is good for listening practice as well. if you have time, look at the lyrics while you listen. maybe memorize a song!
here’s some audiobooks!
dividing your time
a weekly schedule could look like completing 1 lesson in your textbook, reviewing previous lessons, practicing with apps, writing/watching/reading something, etc.
each day you can pick something off of the picture below! listening monday, writing tuesday, reading wednesday…
depending on how much time you have to study, spending 1(+) hour per day is a good ballpark if you want to advance easily in the language.
everyone is different, but this is how i choose to study french. i made a table with each form of practice and i choose 2-3 things off the table to study from (see the picture below). making this is helpful because you spend more time studying the language than looking for ways to study the language. everything is already there for me!

i’m gonna spend the rest of my time studying for cets, especially math exercises. i need to refresh my mind on these formulas!! 😩
JUNE 11, 2018 / rainy & cloudy day - studying for one of my first biggest Exams of my life
I woke up at 4:30 but didnt fully start working until 6am. I finished Biology today, I hope i could clear up on my Chem&physics tomorrow, and solve some math word problems Im having a hard time with !
According to focus i studied 6.5 hours, but im pretty sure I studied 7 ! I hope i could study longer ? How long do you guys normally study during exam season ?
hi po ate, UP has been my dream school ever since when i was in jhs, i've been dreaming to study there, despite of having no assurance that i can pass the test. next sy po, i'll be a gr12 student and planning to take UPCAT. as a former UPCAT taker po, any tips on how to ace the UPCAT?
hello!! i actually made a cets survival guide last year, you can find it here. tbh, i don’t think i can give you like super specific tips regarding the topics because i honestly forgot it na. but here’s some additional advice:
discipline is key. i think that one of the most important things you need while studying for the upcat is really discipline. you should be able to fully utilize the time before grade 12! i know that it’s really tempting to just rest for the summer and leave the studying for later. but trust me, you need all the time you can get! by the time the school year starts, you will be super busy. seriously, do not underestimate the workload of grade 12. i was so busy with schoolwork that there were long periods of time wherein i didn’t even touch my study materials (even though i planned to study every day lmao). you really have to manage your time wisely and be disciplined enough to stick to your schedule (but also don’t forget to rest).
practice active recall. passively going through your notes and mindlessly making reviewers is not enough! rereading, highlighting, and making reviewers won’t be enough — practice tests will be your best friend!! this will really help you retain the information better. i took so many mock tests — ones i got from the internet, some i get from my review materials, etc. also, when i had free time at school, i would really try to use my flashcards to quiz myself of what i knew. you can find out more about active recall here or here.
use a variety of materials. as i mentioned before, i shared materials with my friends (review center booklets, msa booklets, reviewers from the internet, etc.) it really helped me because i noticed that each material has its own strentghs. for example, the material from review center A has more comprehensive lessons about science, but the material from review center B has more concise explanations about certain math lessons. i didn’t just stick to one reviewer! my best friend and i actually bought reviewers together — we would have shifts on who would have them for this particular month (like, she would have science and i would have math). it was better than buying it on my own because it’s more affordable that way. i’m not saying that it’s necessary to buy these, but the materials that helped me the most were the review booklets from Newton and Loyola Student Center (LSC).
i feel like everything i wrote is so messy (sorry, i’m kind of sabog rn because i’m cramming something for my history class askdhdjak). i truly hope that this helped you somehow. if it didn’t, feel free to message me!!! i promise i’ll try hard to answer your questions (or find someone else to answer them haha). anw, good luck! !!! you can do it!!!! i believe in you, future iskolar ng bayan ❣️
