Throwback Thursday: Happy birthday, Usako!

(A late!) Day one of @usamamoweek2023 : Year of the Rabbit

Behind the scenes: a short while before his (ill-fated) trip to United States for his medical school studies, Mamoru surprised Usagi with a simple yet elegant chocolate cake in strawberry frosting, several cupcakes in rainbow frosting, a bunch of balloons and confetti, and (not shown) later on, a lovely date to remember.

What a sweet guy he is, really. 😍😍

Note 1: I made a companion artwork for the previous illustration: Happy birthday, Mamo-chan! . Very opt for the first prompt of this year's UsaMamo week AND 2023 is a big year for our dear Usagi. Not that Sailor Moon Cosmos came out a while ago in Japan (and hopefully us international fans will be watching it soon *cross fingers*), but also it's the Year of the Water Rabbit (according to Chinese zodiac).

Note 2: Thanks to those who are responsible for organizing this year's Usamamo week! This is sort of an icebreaker from my personal projects (and a art market or two I'll be joining). Aaaand love all the entries submitted for this batch (and the previous ones too), especially fanfics! More to come! <3

Happy birthday, Mamo-chan!

(A late!) Day seven of @usamamoweek2023 : Midnight

Mamoru is celebrating his surprise birthday...after an unwanted umpteenth trip to the underworld (no thanks to you, Galaxia! >.&lt;). With a decadent chocolate cake (with edible roses on the side, of course) and spaghetti* from his Usako, of course!

Behind the scenes: His Usako and their senshi friends (and Asanuma! and Motoki and Reika!) surprised him at his peaceful abode...at *you guessed it* the stroke of midnight! In addition, Chibi-Usa and Diana came from the future to join the surprise party crew!

*Note 1: the inclusion of spaghetti in this illustration is based on our family's (or typical Filipino family's, dunno if this is the same case for other countries, please let me know) tradition of having spaghetti - or pancit or other pasta - everytime there's a birthday/holiday celebration.

Note 2: Two birds in one stone! I did this little illustration in celebration of Mamoru's birthday AND I had to catch up with UsaMamo week prompts. I still have at least two(?) artworks to be posted, so stay tuned ^u^

Day two of @usamamoweek2023 : Royalty

"In this (lovely!) Crystal Tokyo exclusive of Sailor Moon Magazine, we're having a lovely feature on Neo Queen Serenity - about balancing her royal duties and motherhood. If you're asking for King Endymion's whereabouts, he's currently on a secret state visit in Manila and Singapore (according to reliable sources). Oh, and watch out for his solo cover soon!

Background story: This very prompt reminded me to repost my art challenge piece for a small local art group I've belonged to. In that art challenge, we were asked to make a faux magazine cover depicting an anime mother of choice. And you know what, the first person that came to mind is Neo Queen Serenity, aka the future Usagi. I even included Small Lady in the mix, too!

I have been juggled with other pursuits (like other art challenges I'm into, art market applications, and online store preps, more of them in the next posts) lately and hope I can find time to work on the other prompts - even it's late XD. I'm just new to making fanworks, while I'll be celebrating my first year in Sailor Moon fandom later this year :D

What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?

Watching the entire Sailor Moon series, and I was like "man, I need to make their relationship much better than this". Looking at you, OG anime version and the lack of UsaMamo sweetness! Ha!

Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?

i tend to work on several wips, and once I'm getting overwhelmed with them I try to accomplish them one by one.

Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?

I prefer doing smaller projects, particularly illustrations. I'm also open to do bigger ones, once I have enough time for it - preferably mini comics / webtoons.

Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?

Slice of life shenanigans! Lots of teasing, Season 1 style!

Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?

Alternative Universe, since I'm currently thinking of their lives as (semi) retired superheroes post Stars arc! Hoping it will take form!

Evil Sailor Team

(Mild spoiler ahead for Sailor Moon Cosmos, folks!)

The moment when one of the saddest scenes in Sailor Moon series ever is an inspiration for me to turn all our beloved Sailor Senshi (and Tuxedo Mask!) into evil spawns. Note that not all of them became evil in THAT storyline, though (clue: there's two of them! Hihi!). :D

Such a quirky exercise for me to work on a different style of eyes while maintaining my art style. And done this one while working on a big artwork (or two). Multitasking yarn??? (Is that multitasking?)

Best of digital art, Sailor Moon edition

I had faint memories of watching Sailor Moon as a kid, when it was first aired on Philippine television eons ago. I only came to revisit this gem of a magical girl anime last year as I had to search for a good anime / TV show (or a bajillion, ah!) to watch.

I've watched both the OG version and the (almost finished!*) Crystal reboot version and although both of them have flaws - haller, unnecessary changes in some characters and wonky animation galore - but mannnn they're both fantastic shows! Both versions gave me fuzzy and nostalgic feelings, not to mention that I'm imagining what's next in store for our best team (lol) after all the events in the Stars arc. (Bless fanfiction! And please, please check out random-mailbox on Tumblr for the best of SM fanfic lists. Most of them are Usamamo centric, but still great! :D)

*noted that as of this writing the Part 1 of SM Cosmos is currently showing in Japanese cinemas, with Part 2 coming on the 30th (aka Usagi + Chibi-Usa's birthday). No international release, though *cries in fomo*

Alcohol marker and ink practice

Done sometime in late May, while working on some art challenge piece (which I will unveil soon as part of some fandom challenge I'm interested in joining in. Hehe)

Brushing off my long-neglected marker coloring skills with sample manga-styled portraits. Thought I have neglected it for months, but man glad I didn't! Love love how the layers of colors made the artwork pop! 11/10 will do it again!

Materials used: Copic alcohol markers, Zig Kurecolor markers, Copic multiliners (in sepia and brown), Zig Super Black ink, Tachikawa G nib and school nib, Deleter Type B paper (I cut them into post card size lol)

Totally Spies agents in casual

Another blast from the childhood, this time around it's all about three Beverly Hills-based teenagers who lived secret lives as agents for WOOHP (World Organization of Human Protection) - in casual outfits. Love love these gals, most especially when they kick butt with their enemies! <3

Who's your favorite Totally Spies gal? (I didn't remembered my fave when I was a kid, and I loveeee them all. But I can relate to Sam a bit :D )

Peko-Chan in two versions

Did two different versions of Peko-Chan, one in markers and another in watercolor x ink. I really enjoyed doing both versions and each one has its own charm.

Here's a throwback to the wonderful nostalgia of the 2000s!

W.i.t.c.h. has been an integral part of my childhood; I used to collect issues of this lovely comicbook-magazine as a kid, while it was still available locally in the Philippines. (Everyone says thank you, Summit Media!)

Guess that this lovely group of ladies still gives me the friendship and magical feels more than twenty years later. They also inspire me (among other things) to become an artist, to make wholesome characters, and to make stories surrounding them.

Who's your favorite W.i.t.c.h. girl? Mine is tossed between Will, Cornelia, and Elyon, but I love them all regardless!
