I feel like a lot of people are misunderstanding why people are proud of Jonathan Van Ness for coming out as HIV positive. I can't count the number of times I've seen comments on news articles saying "why are you proud he has a disease" or "don't celebrate a death sentence" but that indicates a complete lack of knowledge about HIV and about JVN himself. First of all, HIV is not a death sentence; not with modern medicine, not when it's detected early, and certainly not for a celebrity who can afford treatment. But the problem is, most people still see it as the life-ruining illness it was during the AIDS crisis so people are happy that JVN is able to talk freely about this and draw more attention to what life is like for those living with HIV. The circumstances leading up to Jonathan contracting HIV are also important to understanding the story. He was severely abused and hated by peers from a young age which lead to a history of drug use that he has worked incredibly hard to overcome. He now has a platform from which he can spread awareness and be an inspiration to anyone else going through similar situations and doesn't choose to see his diagnosis as a mistake or flaw, but rather as an opportunity to be a role model for others and that's what we are proud of, not the diagnosis itself.
