Arusha, Tanzania
Hand-painted advertisements plaster the homes in Arusha, the same colors strangely mirrored in the Maasai robes. Its as if every color has been poured from the same can of paint. The culture freshly painted over, still wet.
The ease of this mans lean upon his staff, his partner's hand pleasantly placed on his hip. Soda can labels ominously framing the background. Somehow comfortably contrasting each other.

El Capitán, California
When driving the coast of California something strange comes over you, its as if the heat pumping through your open windows has been steeped in a euphoria. A fervor guiding you unknowingly to pockets of repose that dot the windy Highway 1.
El Capitán Canyon is not particularly notable. You won’t see droves of tourists pulling up to snap a few hundred frames, or hear its name sung in Vietnam era songs by Dylan. But the gust of the wind over the dry grass, or the reflection of the sun on the still water stays with you. The vista feels isolated like it’s yours for that moment. You breathe in something new and exhale something old.

Whittier, Alaska, USA
All we could see was snow for countless miles towered by the peaks of glaciers the size of man’s most ambitious projects. A mirage of heat melted our tracks homewards with each long hour.
The silence of Alaska quiets your thoughts and whispers a long lost story tale from centuries past. Suddenly everything stopped and all that was left was peace.

Nonsuch Island, Bermuda
We walked through the old NASA launch site for about an hour, exploring the orphaned buildings. The extinction of one of Americas most significant discovery programs had left a huge skeleton along the coast. At the end of the road, we were met with razor-sharp cliffs which we cautiously descended to swim the gap between the mainland and Nonsuch Island. About 1/4 of a mile in, a swarm of minnows started flying through our legs crashing into our faces and jumping out of the water....was something chasing them I worried? Eventually, we arrived, cameras in hand increasing the island's population to a total of 2.
Nonsuch is home to many of the most endangered species in the world. Almost no one has the chance to see or touch the soil there, and the reverence that one must have in visiting the island is severe. After swimming the gap back I finally understood some of the mysticism that surrounds Bermuda. Beautiful and strong, but alone, amongst 3,716 miles of Atlantic water.

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania - 19,341 ft.
Just after midnight, we started the summit of Uhuru Peak. 6 hours of swirling darkness up the ashen path we took to it step by step. The exhaustion of days of climbing had kicked in and our legs felt as if their gears had frozen over, I caught myself wavering but had to show strength for those in my group behind me. Just as we came to the summit the sun burst through the clouds and my guide Adronis started to sing in Swahili. The tears ran down my face in streams thickened by the icy air, “This is simultaneously the most difficult and most beautiful thing I have ever done in my life” I said to Adronis. The mountain shared with me a lesson like a wise and unassuming professor. I descended it with a new sense of self and respect for things bigger than humanity.

Guadeloupe
Descending from the forest after 3 days of hiking I was met with this sight, a strange juxtaposition between the ephemeral and the eternal. Guadeloupe is unassuming in her beauty. The Carribean could swallow her up whole in its storms if it so pleased and she would be forgotten. Still, somehow she carries on hidden and safe, cradled in the arm of languorous islands.

Le Gros Piton et Le Petit Piton, St. Lucia Island
I spent three days studying these brotherly mountains, watching them change with the rising and falling of the sun. Just before midnight, there was a change in the wind that swept a cover of clouds over their tips, almost as if the sky was tucking them into bed for the evening. St. Lucia invites you to breathe in her salty air, get lost in her forests, marvel at her shapely and dangerous figure and enjoy a night scene like this.

Bassin Bleu, Jacmel, Haiti
It took us 8 hours of labor, trusting the people that walked up to us while we hung our heads low climbing without proper maps. Finally, after crossing field, river and mountain, we made it here to be rewarded with a dive.

A day before we reached basecamp the earth suddenly took on this golden extraterrestrial color, the air became thinner from the altitude but heavy with fog. We were almost to the peak we thought, little did we know what tremendous journey lay ahead.
