3: Uncertainty: Midnight Legacy
W-What?!” I stammered. “Quite a shocker, right?” The gruff one spoke. I stood there without a word to say. I was dead. They were dead. Everyone in this new world, at some point, has died. “Oh yeah, well, if we’re dead...then where the hell are we,” I screamed at the top of my lungs, “if this is some sick joke, just stop it!” “This is no joke, dear.” the woman spoke. “We’re in the midzone battlefield. No one is really sure where we are. We just have to fight the onyx.” The blue one informed. “We all have one thing in common,” hissed the red one, “we’re Gem Watchers.” I fell silent. What are Gem Watchers? Who are they? What are their relevance to this situation? “I’m Casandra, by the way” She spoke, twirling her long brown hair. “I’m Hawk and this is Dawson.” Said Hawk, pointing to the blonde. In return Dawson nodded and smiled. “How are you guys so casual about this?” I asked. “We’ve just grown immune to the insanity I guess.” Casandra sighed. I took a pause for a moment before I began to quiz these crazy people to death. Oh wow, look, I made a pun. To death. Get it? They’re already dead! No? Okay then...tough crowd. “What are Gem Watchers?” I inquired. They all laughed. “I’m serious.” “We’re kind of like...realistic angels, if you will,” Dawson explained, “We’re activated by our first death. When we either learn our lesson, or defeat the Onyx here, we go back into the real world to defeat the Onyx there.” “Who’s the Onyx? What is all of this?” I pleaded. “The Onyx are the evil side of the Gem Watchers.” Dawson chimed. “Then is there a good side?” I asked yet another question. “Well, that would be the combination of all the gems. That person would be called the Diamond.” Dawson answered. “But, we don’t know who that is yet. They’re either hiding or haven't had a first death,” Casandra muttered, “We’re more like the in-between guys fighting for the nonexistent good guy.” I nodded as if I made sense of all of this. So let's review. 1. I don’t even remember who I am or where I’m from. 2. I’m dead. 3. Everyone in this world is also dead. 4. I’m apparently a Gem Watcher. 5. I’ll be put back into the living world later. Okay. Seems legit. “We need to find out your gem and your talent weapon,” Dawson informed once more, “Casandra specializes in weapons and Hawk will help you find out who you are and how you died.”
“Lovely job, ain’t it?” Hawk chuckled.
“As for me,” Dawson smiled, “I’ll help you find your gem and armor.”
I still didn’t know how to react or what to say. I wanted to scream, but it would have been useless, and I would have seemed weaker than I already was.
“Just go with it.” I told myself.
