I’m curious do people not realize that the reason the Elokhar was so ill prepared and bad at being king isn’t just because he was immature, but because his father never bothered to prepare him for the role as Gavilar has no plans to ever give up power. Gavilar was intending on causing the apocalypse so that he could be immortal and reign eternally.

This reread is just making me realize Nynaeve is really Rand's real best friend. She's ride or die for him in a way that no one else in the entire series is. And in return, Nynaeve is literally the only person Rand trusts inherently and never loses his faith in

One of the reasons why I love Abercrombie’s novels is the way he writes folks who suffer debilitating physical and mental hardships. A lot of mainstream narrative centers on the positive changes that suffering can bring – rebirth after a tragedy, unveiling your true character, discovering inner virtues – and the bonds it can forge with others who have dealt with the same pain. But what Abercrombie’s characters repeatedly discover in the face of starvation and torture is that they would do anything to never let that happen again – including inflicting the very same hardships to other people. It’s stated pretty clearly in Savine’s POV during A Little Hatred, but it’s a recurring theme in both trilogies: suffering doesn’t make you a better person. You can choose to be one, but it’s hard, risky and it often directly leads to more misery; it’s not a road to be taken easily, and most of the people Abercrombie writes about choose not to.

I was thinking how among all the Emond Field's kids, Egwene is the only one who wants to leave their village. She doesn't leave because she has to ( like Rand, Perrin and Mat) or because she wants to bring someone back ( Nynaeve) but because she wants to. And she's excited to go to the unknown even when she's faced with less than idyllic situations.

Also, unlike the other four who are struggling to accept their new role in the world, Egwene is welcoming the change in her life.

She's not a reluctant hero, but a willing one.

I was at DragonCon one year when Avery Brooks was on a panel, and a Black dude stood up and talked about how the year DS9 came on, he became the sole custodial guardian of his small son, and he was *terrified* and felt helpless, because he hadn’t really had a father himself, and he didn’t really know any Black fathers he particularly wanted to emulate, and no Black single fathers at all.  He talked about how every week he’d put his kid to bed and sit down and watch Deep Space Nine, and think to himself, “Okay, this, I want us to be this kind of father and son,” and how, silly as it might sound, the idea that Ben could be there for Jake, all the time, successfully, and earn his admiration and trust, was the only source he really had of inspiration, the only voice that was telling him he could handle this job. 

I swear to fuck there was a whole auditorium of people in tears by the time he was done, including both him and Brooks.  It was one of the most beautiful moments I ever saw about the sometimes bloodless-sounding term “representation,” and about fandom in general, and I will never forget it.

I like how it’s universally accepted that Game of Thrones was trash after they ran out of book material. Like in the SDCC Amazon panel, the interviewer telling Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins - ‘Everyone knows what happened with GOT after they ran out of the books, but you don’t have that problem’. And there being no pushback from Judkins on this who simply explains that they have a different problem - fitting 14 huge books into 8 seasons.

And just after listening to Benioff and Weiss interviews, everything Rafe Judkins says about their adaptation - like having both book fans and non book readers in the writer’s room to balance things out, having a diverse writer’s room including a female co-writer, that he likes being challenged on his writing etc. - makes me hopeful about the TV show.

I am not a purist - I don’t need the show to 100% follow the books. That’s just not possible - the world of the books is just too expansive for that to happen. Just tell a good story, be true to the characters - don’t use them as plot devices, stick to the overarching theme of the story, keep the fantasy elements in - the magic system is what makes these books great, let these characters go on their adventures and have fun. Ex. The Expanse - an adaptation that is actually better than the books IMO - though that is science fiction, the book writers are heavily involved with the show, and the world is less complex than WOT.

I came across an old interview of Robert Jordan on one of the WOT forums and what he says about fantasy is why I love the genre:

In the real world we have a great deal of uncertainty, a great deal of danger and very little certainty of where we are going, how we are going to get there, what the end result is going to be. In fantasy, you face a great deal of danger, a great deal of uncertainty, but you have one particular certainty when you get into fantasy. You know that evil is not going to win the final victory. There will be victories by evil along the way, people you like, people you love may die but in the end good will win out. And that I believe is becoming more important to people - to have that certainty. - Robert Jordan

We don’t need any of that dark, nihilistic ‘If you think this has a happy ending’ garbage that GOT served up to subvert expectations because happy characters are boring or some such edgy take on all this.

WOT is just old time Good Vs evil fantasy fare and I hope Rafe Judkins embraces that and incorporates that into his TV adaptation.
