I’ve noticed that Snufkin and his personality seem to cause some trouble for many Moomin fans. I’ve received some inquiries from people who are either concerned why Snufkin wants to be alone, how it affects people around him and if he needs to recover from it. But Snufkin’s personality and the way the narrative treats it are best understood if you remember that Moomins are from Finland.
In Finland, solitude is highly valued. It’s not regarded as notably strange to need some time to be alone after socializing with other people. Finnish people especially see natural environments as perfect places to recover from hectic life. In this context, Snufkin spending excessive times alone seeking peace in nature is seen as understandable, even relatable to many.
On the same note, Snufkin’s personality and the way he interacts with people are also accepted in Finland. Finnish people do not tend to like small talk and instead, talking about unimportant issues just for the sake of avoiding quiet moments is often seen as a sign either deception or shallowness. To put it politely. Quiet moments are seen as natural part of a pleasant social time. And people who are quiet and spare their words for important topics are viewed as intellectual and trustworthy.
This is something that is good to remember if you ever visit Finland or meet Finns. Finns are quiet, reserved and value sparing words. It’s not meant to be rude, it’s just a cultural trait.
With this, it is not strange that Snufkin is characterized as he is. And his character arc is not about learning away from his asocial habits or need for solitude. He learns that love and freedom are compatible, even necessary for each other. But even after he learns that in the last book, he still leaves Moominvalley again.
In general, it is always important to remember that culture affects the story and characters. If any story has something that seems weird or undesirable to you, it is good to consider if this is a cultural thing.

Also! Haven’t seen any posts about this on my dash, but: all fellow EU citizens old enough to vote, let’s vote this month to put some smart MEPs in the European Parliament!
Voting, and voting smartly, is the best way to make a stand against questionable EU politics such as the so-called meme ban, and to ensure that the European Union does its part in the fight against climate change and slowing down biodiversity loss. So let’s go vote (election day from May 23rd to 26th depending on your country, more info here)!
