This post is like a fucking rosetta stone I've had the same theme song tagged in at least 6 languages so far
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
The more that I read different kinds of witch trial books, the more that I am insistent upon the theme of the witch trial not be relegated to simply a "feminist" issue. Because my favorite is two things: 1. No recognition for King James Bible being part of that political swing and rewriting versions of the bible to match his fervor. 2. Adamant denial of witchcraft and witches in general. Because how can we deal with the messiness of real witches. How can we deal with the messiness of witches who work with the devil. How can we deal with the messiness of witches cursing political entities. How can we deal with the messiness of witches doing world bending spellwork.
Because if it's just the case that the patriarchy is at work silencing "intolerable women" - it wouldn't have been as centralized as it was. Meaning to say, it's a particular brand of a very specific kind of Christianity which was very much tied with the political movement (and still is, if we are being so very honest today). Now, am I immune to the understanding of yes, this is in fact, a very largely impacting women thing. Yes, yes I am aware of this point and am not ignoring it. Specifically poor women. Specifically fat women. Specifically ill women. Specifically ugly women. Specifically disabled women. Specifically single women. Because existence is immoral for women as a beginning point for politicking and society under this particular situation. So I can agree that it is a feminist issue there that we need social change and societal change which makes it better for everyone.
But largely that happened in specific areas. Even this book recognizes that in certain Slavic countries, it was men that were primarily hunted because of cultural deviance from English / Anglo-Saxon / Protestant aesthetics.
So if we have to start from the fact that witches aren't real. That we ignore what was done, the culturally and politically motivated changes that Mr. James did as much as he could to socially reform the world he existed in to accept his ideals. And we stick with it being just the horrors women had to go through, then we miss a key component of the puzzle for the sake of comforting away from messy conversations around witchcraft as a whole.
And that's why I read these things because it's important to know what I am being denied while also what I am being sold.

Buffy S2E11 ("Ted") is wild because it's a deeply unsettling meditation on how misogyny and intrafamilial power dynamics enable violence and abuse and how society will do absolutely anything other than listen to a "troubled" teenager about the violence they are being threatened with/subjected to. but then it makes sure to wrap up with a nauseating scene that's like "see everything is fine and Buffy has a good relationship with her mom after all and they're sitting on the porch swing in the sunshine even though her mom believed this man over her own daughter :)"
Time Lapse of the Land Taken From Native Americans
via reddit
I will reblog this EVERY GODDAMN TIME so people can understand how the US government taking more and more land from Natives is nothing new (even the land originally promised after being kicked off their original, sacred lands) and they NEED to be fucking stopped. They need to be held accountable for the destruction of our people not just then but also now.
@i-add-sources do you know where we can read more about this? (Please and thank you!)
