Congratulations. You have survived the war. Now live with the trauma.

I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you,
I’m sorry that I survived,
And if I could go back in time
You never would have died

A few chunks of dirt crumbled under the soles of Upham’s boots as he picked his way over the heaped rubble that partially barricaded the open area where the medics had temporarily herded all of their wounded. He carefully avoided a twisted piece of rusty metal jutting out of the debris and almost sprained his ankle in the process, but the lingering adrenaline in his blood ensured that he barely felt it.
Please be alive. Tim knew that the captain, Mellish, and Jackson were dead, but he hadn’t seen Reiben or the Sergeant among the identifiable bodies or on their feet, so he was able to maintain a sliver of hope that they might be wounded but still living. As he surveyed the mass of bodies, however, it faded rapidly. There were all manner of insignias that he didn’t recognize and bloodstained patches that meant nothing to him, but none of them identified any of the groaning soldiers as their own, until--
BROOKLYN N.Y.
The faded Sharpie on the back of the jacket immediately grabbed Upham’s attention. Thank God. He’s alive. Reiben’s alive. All of the man’s limbs were intact and he didn’t see any fresh blood, but the relief was short-lived, as his sight came to rest upon the bandaging tied at the back of his head moments later. His eyes. Please, God, just have it be a scrape, anything but his eyes. A sickening wave of anxiety and dread overcame any residue of the blankness that filled him when he’d stared into Steamboat Willie’s eyes and pulled the trigger an hour earlier.
What he could see of the wound didn’t look as bad as it could have been, but it wasn’t good. Medics had wrapped damp gauze around the circumference of the Brooklynite’s head a few times to cover his harsh, narrow blue eyes, but there wasn’t any blood on it. It was only when the man ever-so-slightly turned his head that Tim saw what appeared to be the edge of a burn wound glistening at his temple. Oh no. Oh, God, he’s been blinded--
He did his best to keep his voice steady when he began to speak. “Reiben. It’s me. I, uh--how are you doing? Are you alright?”
Upham silently swore to himself that he’d retrieve Mellish’s corpse afterwards, to at least do the tiny amount that he could - but right now he needed to focus on those who were alive, no matter how difficult it was to shake the sounds of the struggle still echoing in his head.
Hey guys, sorry that I’ve been gone lately. I got a great job a walk away from my apartment, which I have had to spend a LOT of time trying to pull back together, but I’m pretty busy most of the day. Not to mention, my grandfather is in the hospital, which also complicates things. My hope is that things should calm down in a week or so and I’ll be able to get to stuff then.
Reblog if your muse has had a near death experience.

A thought about them that they’d never share: First impression of them: Favorite thing about them: Least favorite thing about them: Hopes for their future relationship:
"I didn't want to bother you none."
“Oh! You weren’t bothering me,” Tim answered quickly, flashing an awkward, apologetic smile. “I was just um, I was kind of wrapped up in what I was doing - not that you’re interrupting. Do you need something?”
"Don’t look at me like that."
“Sorry, sir.” Upham murmured, then turned his eyes toward a rat gathering moldy hay in the corner and held back a quiet sigh. He hadn’t meant for his stare to be so pointed as he studied the face of his commanding officer in the dim light (not that he’d even meant for it to be noticed at all).
Some uncannily relevant saying hovered at the edge of Tim’s memory as he watched the small rodent make its way along the edge of the wall. What was it? Something by Nietzsche, he knew that much–
Es gibt eine Unschuld der Bewunderung. That was it. There is an innocence to admiration - and he’d lost it in a spectacular fashion this afternoon.
Miller had seemed like a good person. He was well-educated and kind enough and he was certainly levelheaded – and yet, he apparently had no problem with executing a man who had surrendered, either. None of them did.
A sense of hollowness grew in his chest at the thought and joined the dull ache that until now had always been accompanied by tears. Had he watched Wade die a day ago, maybe two, Tim had no doubt that he would’ve wept, but it was as if he’d lost the ability. He was too tired. Instead, he just settled for letting the heaviness overcome him without any kind of fight.
The hay around him rustled as Upham shifted and leaned against the rotting boards at his side, closing his eyes. He needed to sleep, even if every nerve in his body crackled with nervous energy.
