(( Hello there. It feels like forever, and I am sorry for not updating sooner. Everything just sort of started happening all at once - new job, family visiting, people staying over, interviews, even dating. And then my internet was being a shithead, so I wasn’t able to do anything when I did have time. 

I haven’t even been in my own apartment in a few days. It’s crazy. 

But, I’m working through replies. I”m starting with Don’s first, then I’ll finish what I owe on Reiben’s blog. Thank you to those who’ve been patient. I’m grateful and love you. <3 I know I also lost some followers. Y’all can suck it. 

Just kidding. I totally get why since I haven’t been active.

    A few chunks of dirt crumbled under the soles of Upham’s boots as he picked his way over the heaped rubble that partially barricaded the open area where the medics had temporarily herded all of their wounded. He carefully avoided a twisted piece of rusty metal jutting out of the debris and almost sprained his ankle in the process, but the lingering adrenaline in his blood ensured that he barely felt it. 

    Please be alive. Tim knew that the captain, Mellish, and Jackson were dead, but he hadn’t seen Reiben or the Sergeant among the identifiable bodies or on their feet, so he was able to maintain a sliver of hope that they might be wounded but still living. As he surveyed the mass of bodies, however, it faded rapidly. There were all manner of insignias that he didn’t recognize and bloodstained patches that meant nothing to him, but none of them identified any of the groaning soldiers as their own, until–

    The faded Sharpie on the back of the jacket immediately grabbed Upham’s attention. Thank God. He’s alive. Reiben’s alive. All of the man’s limbs were intact and he didn’t see any fresh blood, but the relief was short-lived, as his sight came to rest upon the bandaging tied at the back of his head moments later. His eyes. Please, God, just have it be a scrape, anything but his eyes. A sickening wave of anxiety and dread overcame any residue of the blankness that filled him when he’d stared into Steamboat Willie’s eyes and pulled the trigger an hour earlier.

    What he could see of the wound didn’t look as bad as it could have been, but it wasn’t good. Medics had wrapped damp gauze around the circumference of the Brooklynite’s head a few times to cover his harsh, narrow blue eyes, but there wasn’t any blood on it. It was only when the man ever-so-slightly turned his head that Tim saw what appeared to be the edge of a burn wound glistening at his temple. Oh no. Oh, God, he’s been blinded– 

    He did his best to keep his voice steady when he began to speak. “Reiben. It’s me. I, uh–how are you doing? Are you alright?”

    Upham silently swore to himself that he’d retrieve Mellish’s corpse afterwards, to at least do the tiny amount that he could - but right now he needed to focus on those who were alive, no matter how difficult it was to shake the sounds of the struggle still echoing in his head.

It was finally their moment of rest, pushing back the counter attack from Carentan has left Easy Company and the rest of the 506th in need of it. Now they were more towards the rear of the airborne advance and resting outside the town that was liberated only a day ago by them. Bill decided to take out a cigarette, lighting it very casually as he noted a squad of men approaching them. They weren’t an airborne unit from the patches, probably came from the Utah Beach. 

He didn’t get up, he waited for them to come to his platoon. Taking in a long drag from the cigarette, he let out a cloud of smoke as one of them approached and began to speak. Looking up, his brow furrowed at the question before letting out a slight scoff.

“Ya should be more specific? Ya know how many Ryans we got?”

The puff of smoke greeted him as the trooper answered his question. He waved his hand in front of his face, clearing his line of sight as he remembered the cigar Caparzo had given him earlier. Reiben noted the man’s accent, and smirked. “Fair enough,” he mumbled. 

The BAR rested on his shoulder as he looked back to the others, asking them what the guy’s full name was. It was James but the trooper had a middle name that he didn’t care to remember. He glanced back at the trooper, “The guy’s name is James Francis Ryan. Heard of him?” 

As he eyed the other’s uniform carefully once more, he wondered if they were even looking in the right place. How many guys hadn’t gotten lost or killed already during the invasion? He could be among those. 

“What unit you all in?”
