I meet a lot of people who are interested in art. Unfortunately, most go to a mall or the flea market to buy 'art'. There's a lot of debate about what art is, and conversation excludes the general public. My opinion: buy what you like. However, don't be naive if you really want to buy something that might in the long run be worth investing in. There's a huge difference between, what I call: (i) Sunday paintings', and (ii) paintings that are sold through agents, galleries or artist studios. (i) Produced, mostly, by artists who did not study art, not to say that it invalidates what they do, there are numerous artists who became famous and never studied art. (ii) A lot of agents, galleries, artist studios are experts at what they do, what they know about the market and what's going on in the greater art world, including international and local trends. Here's where the magic is! If you are interested in buying art, not at premium prices necessarily, visit artist studios; printing studios; contemporary art galleries that don't sell ''Sunday paintings". Ask art consultants, most art consultants, if they know what art is, should be able to point you in the right direction. Don't go with the first person's opinion, see at least three different art consultants or galleries. That way you acquire a feel for what you like. Visit exhibition openings, it's free! A lot of people think you need to be invited, there are circumstances whereby only buyers or regular clients are invited, but that won't be advertised publicly.
