Interested, please email: [email protected] Ideal students are ages middle school through adult** who fall under one or more of these categories: - Looking to develop as a solo beatboxer/vocal percussionist; - Already serving as, or want to be the vocal percussionist / beatboxer for an existing group or act (scholastic or extracurricular) - Getting started in live looping, or a stage performer looking to add or develop live looping as/for their live show (including those currently using virtually any hardware & some software loop applications, pls inquire) - Um, interested in being the kid who goes to school and tells their friends they're taking beatbox lessons? (I mean... someone was probably thinking it, right?) ** For younger students: Like any performing interest, beatboxing & looping can also be a great way to develop extroversion, confidence, and skills interacting with live audiences & group settings. Feel free to contact if your kid is showing the "beatbox bug"... Short story: #MikeWhyonTour #LaterGram #MÉXICOY2K16 #farewell #AlltheHashbrowns Medium story: MW internets, I want to introduce you to JoséAntonio (L) and Eliud (R). Two people that require some talking about. #LifeisPeople Long story: Meet Eliud. Eliud contacted me back in November and basically said, "we're gonna throw the biggest and best festival for live looping music ever right here in México." And then he did. It cost him, I think, most or all of his sleep for the better part of a month. Every morning, he was up at the venue. Every night, he was out making sure the acts were happy. He said thank you a million times to everyone, told them how happy he was that we were here. We were thankful. We were the happy ones. Eliud is powered by passion. I know the type. (On some level, I am the type.) He took a single touring experience and turned that memory into an unforgettable experience for everyone around him. Meet Tonee. JoséAntonio (Tonee) was one of the chief liaisons for the two cities of the tour in Jalisco. I could simply say he exemplified the quality of work any of them put in on our behalf, but that would be selling him short. Over two weeks, Tonee set the standard for "above and beyond". Mexican folks are big on "my house is your house" -- Americans bandy the expression about so much in Spanish I sometimes think we diminish its meaning. I'll never think of that expression again without thinking of the way Tonee lives it. For a lucky few of us, his house WAS our house. But that was only the beginning: he served as a transporter, interpreter (he ended up being my overdub voice on my TV interview, haha), and maybe most heroically, when an act went down on the night of my last show, Tonee (who is also an extremely talented cellist, and newer solo looper) bravely stepped up and performed his first solo set. Well. I'm really impressed by these two dudes, Internet. So I thought you should meet them... If you haven't already been lucky enough to meet them in person. - mw (at Silvestre)

Short story: #MikeWhyonTour #LaterGram #Y2K festival founder and #GodfatherofLiveLooping #RickWalker rocking his new #MikeWhy tee after closing night at #UP #Mexico #AlltheHashbrowns Long story: A few words about Rick Walker that, to me, tell you what you need to know: When I played *his* festival in 2014, he was the FIRST GUY to meet me after the set and buy a CD from me when he knew he didn't have to. Fast forward to May 2016 - he was the FIRST GUY at my table paying for a shirt that I offered him for free. (Did I mention he headlined the next night?) Non-music folks, I *think* you "get" this. Music folks, I am positive you do. People like Rick remind me that there's so many ways to make music in the world - it's about more than making your own, it's about empowering and supporting others to make music as well. I imagine that these are the kind of things that keep us going to each other's shows on our nights off. Got to #LA, saw palm trees, made a left, went down the road two hours, stopped when I saw more palm trees. And so another leg of #MikeWhyonTour concludes. I feel like each tour gets better and better, and it's not just because they keep happening. It's because you guys keep sharing my belief in what's going on here. Whether it's a kind word or a shout, or just checking in when you know I'm on the road, it matters. I hear you guys out there wherever I am, and it means the world to me. -- short story -- Full video - http://TinyURL.com/MouthMusicMerica -- medium story -- One of these days I'll do something a little fancier as tribute, but until then I hope this'll do. -- long story -- I'm not terribly political, and the very few views I do hold aren't terribly conservative. I'd strongly prefer there were no need for militaries at all. Whether we currently live in a world that needs military enforcement is a debate I won't engage in, but we did (and do) live in a world where it is mandated that this type of service exist. It seems to me that anyone who is deemed capable of that service gets the option of "standing a post" (or not) because someone else is already doing so -- regardless of risk to their health, well being, or the continuity or stability of their family. Me? I make silly sounds with my mouth. As a living, even. So to me, it'd be silly to not take a moment to recognize those men and women -- and their families -- who make these simple and powerful commitments and give up a lot of their choices (freedoms, even) so that a lot of people -- like me, for example -- can essentially do as they please. The life I have is one I truly love, I hope you love yours too. I get to decide what it is because a lot of other people don't all the time, and virtually none of them wish to perish in the process. All the same, many have, and likely many will. So there's my $0.02. I don't insist that you agree, but I'd really appreciate it if you just put down that beverage at the BBQ and reflected for a second today. In the meantime, you're free to make your own decisions about how important this is, but thanks for taking the time to read how important this is to me. Happy Memorial Day, errbody. Short story: "Talento." (?) Medium story: "Words have meaning." -MR Long: The first boss I had in my former/cubicle life was fond of malapropism and other verbal snippets too amusing to forget ("keep your ear to the grindstone"? I was certain he was joking the first time I heard that one) during staff meetings. Maybe the joke was on me, because simple things stick: 15 years later, I could tell you nearly all of them. Clearly I didn't give him enough credit for a natural leadership instinct. I doubt that he's reading (or maybe hope not), but perhaps he'll feel that little tingle making a difference to someone can yield #StarfishStory. To this day - and for as verbose as I am - I lean cautious when it comes to words with extreme (-ly subjective) meanings, even if it risks coming off as (more of?) a jerk. Love. Hate. "The Best", or any superlative. It requires creativity at times, but usually results in something that feels as accurate in print as in the moment. In a TXT-y and #hashbrowny era, that feels like more of a requirement than it used to be. Words have meaning. Here's one: ARTIST. Talk about subjective. The implied compliment is there; still, I shy a bit any time that word gets pointed my way. Performer, sure. Entertainer? Here's hoping. "Musician" even leaves a little too much wiggle for my literal personal tastes. My personal definition powers the shudder: I feel like a true "artist" *could* create their work privately, share it with only themselves, and be satisfied with its existence and their own. No showmanship, and no need for subjective reassurance. Art for the sake of art, as defined by its creator. Period. After this many festivals, the word on the bottom of the name tag / event pass has become a source of related scrutiny. I mention ARTIST because it is by far the most frequent. But TALENT? That is easily a first. A gracious nod from the #MÉXICOY2K16 event organizers, I'm electing to spend the next couple weeks treating it like a challenge I'm rising to meet, to back their play with an effort steeped in the basic joy of doing the things.
