Even though I was supposed to be taking a rest yesterday, I still ended up drawing for 3 hours. 3 different things that are all pretty important. I finally managed to do a perspective drawing! And wanted to do a good pair of pages after Thursday felt disastrous.

Thursday was a very long and exhausting day, where I was drawing/studying from 7:45am to around 6:30pm. Felt quite futile and frustrating because I wasn't able to do perspective/environment correctly and that ended up messing up what I originally intended w storyboards and I was really stressed abt meeting the deadline so I just wanted to push ahead. I ended up changing some of the panels from what I intended, but I wasn't happy. So I'll need to go back and redo them.

Read 'Space Drawing Perspective' in 24h and understood the different perspective points in theory, but drawing them well in practice is a totally different matter!

Wednesday was a funny day. Went to the gym in the morning. Started drawing after lunch but then my mechanical pencil nib had come to the end of its life and I couldn't find any more at home. Went to the shops (ended up being 2 hours), took me ages to find the nibs and they were super expensive. Sigh. But drawing wise it was a good day. Redid and finished some sketches from months ago and now it looks way better.

Over the past two days, I have been working on some concept art and culture references for my manga. Whilst this isn't the first time I’ve tried doing this, it really feels like the pressure is on because I'm trying to finish my manga in time for Japan's International Manga Competition. This is actually my first time doing turnarounds. References have been really helpful, but ultimately I needed that push to start drawing turnarounds. Learning how Japanese animators work helps explain why it’s so important to make certain concept materials during the preproduction stage, and it’s not just vibes and future art books. After watching Bellamy Brook’s interview with Spilled Ink, I learnt that character references are a vital part of the anime pipeline since animators use them to accurately recreate characters scene by scene.

Yesterday was the first day and I drew for around five hours. Originally it wasn't supposed to take that long, as I already had concept art of the character and I thought I would just finish it by adding turnarounds. But I realised there were more details I wanted to add to the character - especially symbols and embellishments - but I had already coloured the original, so I ended up redoing in the whole thing. That's what happens when you do things traditionally!

I also debated I'm not in my head over how much details I should include, with Evangelion and Genshin impact being opposite sides of the design minimalism vs maximalism spectrum. At one point there was a very detailed version of the character sketched out, but I didn't take a photo of it and then it up with erasing it so I've could compromise somewhere between elaborate designs and something simple. Unfortunately, drawing and researching for five hours triggered my arm pain.

Today, I didn't start drawing until 5 pm as I was busy with other errands. But it didn't take that long, as I only had something simple in mind and already had quite a few reference photos and previous drawings I had done.

Tomorrow I will be doing some environment concept art, something I'm not familiar with, so I'll try and watch some videos tonight to prepare, just like mangakas prepare the weekend before.

comic update

today i finally drew the first page of the comic i've been working on for almost 4 years! was a big step. turns out the problem wasn't that i wasn't writing enough, it was that i wasn't drawing enough because i was afraid i was not good enough/not ready

i also realised i don't need to write a script - comics are very visual for me so a script is not useful. i can write a detailed outline and i will write the dialogue and text when i storyboard.

it did not happen on my own record lol. i talked about it extensively yday with friends who are poets/playwrights and have been super inspired by my screenwriter classmate who is writing all the time. i'm glad to have so many new people in my life who are committed to their craft and it's also been important to see the realistic sacrifices they're making.

btw i was told to stop editing and rewriting the opening again and again

also worth saying i was out of it for a year + because of an injury/disability

i also talked about it to a girl who isn't a writer, but she was super sweet and said she would read it if i drew it - i gave a v brief summary and she was like, "so sci-fi like ursula le guin" - that's a big name aha, i really admire le guin, she's probs my favourite sci-fi writer? i would like to work hard to make that comparison real one day.
