Based on what Tamsyn Muir said about Alecto “hopefully” being the last book. I wish I could tell her directly “Do it. If the story needs to be longer do it. Hell make an entire book about the Harrow Nova au cause it ties into some later arc. Take up space. Dominate the genre.So many male writers make 5-8 books about some fantasy/Sci-fi world cause they feel like they have the audience’s attention to do so. And to be completely honest Tamsyn Muir has my attention like no other. Like yes girl make me read 3 more books consisting of 500-600 pages. I am sat.

Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in “blind auditions” with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.

rating ways to advertise the locked tomb

"lesbian necromancers in space": 5/10. technically true, except that gideon isn't a necromancer and for the most part they aren't in space. can also be tonally misleading; implies a fun space opera adventure and fails to mention the impending emotional devastation. that being said it is iconic and (mostly) effective

"murder mystery in a haunted gothic castle": 8/10. MUCH better at capturing the tone and plot of the first book, but still a little off. imagine picking up the book because of this blurb and then watching gideon nav make a mean girls reference in the first 20 pages. the whiplash could kill you

"a locked tomb mystery": 5/10. nondescriptive and a little misleading, but i can't give this any lower than a 5 because the pun is very good. gideon would love this one and that should count for something

"gay goth among us": 10/10. i'm not even going to pretend like this one doesn't nail it. try and argue against this. you can't. captures the murders, the space-y setting, the queer characters, the tone and aesthetic, AND the contemporary humor. chef's kiss

"enemies to lovers 'i hate everyone but you' slow burn": 1/10. true if you squint. the relationship between gideon and harrow would make booktok weep

you know for someone who supposedly hates poetry harrow sure is a poetic little shit. i mean even laying aside all of the devastatingly romantic nonsense she says to and about gideon, her first instinct when pleading for help is to say "lord, i am hunted. i perish." ianthe says something snide about palamedes and harrow tells her that she is "not so worthy of that brain as to wipe its bloodied remnants from the wall." she's so dramatic and verbose.

when she gives gideon the same spiel about the basement that teacher gave to her, gideon immediately assumes that it's a Nonagesimus original and calls it a sermon. and harrow responds "it's not one of mine, nav."

it is a severely untapped idea that harrow wrote her own sermons. i would pay top dollar for a book of harrow's original sermons. i mean can you imagine. can you fucking imagine what those must have been like.

My point is not that I think we're going to get an unambiguously happy ending my point is if you add a million events per book (constant temptation for tazmuir) statistically nearly everything that could happen is likely to happen meaning that among other things gideon and harrow's mouths Will be meeting and you can quote me on that when atn comes out

pyrrha absolutely is wonderful and maternal but this is also the woman who romanced the leader of an enemy faction using the body of her best friend, who she loved enough that she either willingly died for him or continued to love him after he killed her and ate (most of) her soul. if someone told her harrow had so much of gideon’s blood on her hands that she could open the locked tomb when they were preteens she’d probably flash back fondly to the first time wake almost killed her. AU pyrrha would watch kiddie harrow and gideon going absolutely apeshit on each other at the playground and immediately try to coordinate a play date with the reverend parents.

yeah she’s 100% mom-material but what makes her a true MILF is that she is just as insane as everyone else in these books.

No because I can’t stop thinking about the themes of childhood in the locked tomb, I’m not sure if its like, a byproduct of other themes, or if it’s all building to something- the mere existence of Nona seems to imply the latter- but it cant escape notice that a huge portion of the characters in the Locked Tomb universe seem to have been denied childhood.

The Lyctors quite literally never were children, they were reborn with no memory of their prior lives. Their sociopath behavior is not just a byproduct of their age but the fact that they literally do not remember ever being  nurtured or cared for. I don’t think its a coincidence that the Cythera and Loveday were the last to ascend, and Anastasia and Samael *didn’t* ascend, and they were 4 of the 6 saints to remember their childhoods (no clue on what Cyrus and Valency thought of it afaik)

 The Nine Houses in of themselves do not seem designed to provide a nurturing childhood. Children start preparing for their life of war early, doubly so if they are born with necromantic ability. We do see some examples of nurturing, but we see even more of children thrown into war before puberty, and children being born to become batteries. The one house we know for a fact was dedicated to protecting children till they turned 18 is the ninth house, and the plot of the series arguably begins with the decision to betray that dedication.

Harrow is described as being insanely unchildlike from birth, being able to sit silently in pews for hours.

I feel like if there is a thesis statement on the series relationship to childhood in the books so far, it comes from the scene where Ortus apologies for not looking out for Harrow:

“She was the Reverend Daughter. She was beyond pity, beyond the tenderness of a member of her congregation rendering her down into a neglected child. The problem was that she had never been a child; she and Gideon had become women before their time, and watched each other’s childhood crumble away like so much dust.”

It’s been said before that a large part of the series seems to reflect love as pity, caring for someone when they’re in a wretched shameful state, when help is truly needed and people answer the call and do it with kindness. Childhood is when this type of love is most given, when we are our most vulnerable and our care is given most unconditionally.

And the fact that Nona’s story is so important to the series that it was worth expanding the trilogy to a quartet for her- it speaks to me that it was very important for her to experience that kind of nurturing love on a personal level, as a human. A lot has changed since John locked Alecto away, but the biggest difference- the one John doesn’t even know about -is that his Revenant Beast now has an inner child.

im in denial. i finished nona and im in denial. my heart is broken and my brain is struggling to comprehend what i just read. my fucking soul is divided. because on one side, it's a work of art, it keeps getting better, it's just THE perfect book before the last one, before alecto and after gideon and harrow. it follows through in a perfectly insane and gorgeous ride, changing every paradigm while never losing track. only tasmyn could do this, holy holy fuck. it's never not brilliant, not breathtaking, not surprising and fresh and absolutely nuts. it's tender in every word, but it's also harsh and bare and devastating. nona's sweet, funny, bright and hopeful, and so charmingly pure. she is innocent and she is wise and wild and atemporal. it's a pleasure to read about her, to get to know her like this, untouched, unbothered, and oh so loved. the babiest of a the foundest familiest.

on the other side, there's the pain, the shock, the loss. we keep losing characters we loved because they keep unavoidably changing by horrifying circumstances and scary-ass surroundings (and scary asses). morphing into new beings that are uncomfortable, whether they are a possible solution to the best friendship story ever written (fucking paul), or whether it's the saddest corpse (and what a corpse, jesus) that is kind of resurrected (or forcefully put together by daddy -issues). uncomfortable, yet still them, still gideon and palamedes and camilla (my sweethearts). and this is just the beginning, because now that we know and LOVE nona, we will meet alecto's rage and hell unravelled, and nona will be gone... but also not. and i will learn to love them again, i will love every version they unavoidably become. i'm certain. i trust tasmyn with my life and i'm so sure. (a re-read of the aerodynamic holes already restarted the fires in my heart.) but fuck, it's hard to say goodbye to the known, to the loved and cherished already (which can't be taken away, indeed), so perhaps it's, well, a matter of faith, a matter of caring anyway.

it's a whole new dimension of grief and love and BOY is this a good series. it leads to terrible, terrifying realisations, but it's so so good.
