June 6th 1944: D-Day On this day in 1944, the D-Day landings began on the beaches of Normandy as part of the Allied ‘Operation Overlord’. The largest amphibious military operation in history, the operation involved thousands of Allied troops landing in France. For those landing on the beaches of Normandy, they faced heavy fire, mines and other obstacles on the beach, but managed to push inland. In charge of the operation was future US President General Dwight Eisenhower and leading the ground forces was British General Bernard Montgomery. The landings proved a decisive Allied victory, as they secured a foothold in France which had been defeated by Nazi Germany in 1940. D-Day was a key moment in the Second World War and helped turn the tide of the war in favour of the Allies. 70 years on, we remember not just the strategic victory that was D-Day but also the ultimate sacrifice paid by thousands of soldiers on both sides of the fighting.

Normandy Beaches in 1944 & 70 Years Later

On June 6, 1944, Allied soldiers descended on the beaches of Normandy for D-Day, an operation that turned the tide of the Second World War against the Nazis, marking the beginning of the end of the conflict. Reuters photographer Chris Helgren compiled archive pictures taken during the invasion and went back to the same places to photograph them as they appear today.

My father participated in the 50th Anniversary flyover of Normandy with VA-34 Blue Blasters. They painted invasion stripes on the A-6Es and flew a missing man formation over the beach. He gave me a photo of the occasion. According to him, the bunkers still smell of gunpowder.

So there is going to be a pretty awesome concert in town in a couple weeks.

By awesome, I mean the tickets are $18.  And I really want to go. So I told Paul that Jessica and I might be going.

And he gets super passive aggressive about it.  Its obvious that he doesn't want me to go. He then goes on a rant about how throughout this whole deployment, life went on without him.  That I did all these cool things while he was stuck in the desert.

And while I wanted to feel for him, after a while I just got beyond annoyed.  Like, did you want me to just sit in the house for 9 months and just wait for you to come home?

He pulled this a while ago, because, I'm sure the only reason this deployment has gone by as fast and as well as it has (for being our first) is because I met Jessica.  And we hang out pretty much everyday. And he was jealous about me spending time with her.  Again, did you want me to just sit in the dark and wait the 9 months.

We are so close, so so close to this deployment being done.  Can we not?
