Sakura Yabusame by Aomori Japan

Yabusame is a traditional martial arts of mounted archery which started during the Heian Period, a time when the first female Samurai, Tomoe Gozen, was first known and recorded in history.

Sakura Yabusame is a special event for female archers only which takes place during spring, where women in kimonos ride horses at full speed under the sakura and shoot their targets.

Cherry blossoms in full bloom!!!🌸 There’s something so magical about sakura season. In Okinawa, even though the cherry blossoms also kind of stood out in the subtropical climate lol, every encounter with a flowering cherry blossom tree during the blooming season was so magical…. Every day, staring at the same trees until the blossoms fell away. Seeing the beautifully dressed archers under the trees, during that kind of ephemeral season… it’s so stunning! ✨

Yabusame by tokio_kid via Japan Blossoms

Yabusame (mounted archery) dates back as far as the Kamakura Period (during the Mongol Invasion of Japan). Today, in places such as the Aomori Prefecture, it has become a tradition that is held during the cherry blossoms known as Sakura Yabusame where all the horse archers are females.
