Depression: An Idiots Guide
• Depression is a diagnosed condition that involves the brain and its chemicals.
• Depression doesn't always have causes. Sometimes, we don't have a reason to be depressed, we just are. The same as someone has no reason to have tonsillitis.
• 'Cheer up' is probably the worst thing to say to someone depressed.
• Depression is now a trend and people are labelled as attention seekers because of this, so ALWAYS believe someone who claims to be depressed. You never know what may be happening in their head.
• People cope in different ways: exercise; self-harm; art; meditation; medication etc. These ways are all fine and suit the individual.
• Always be reassuring, no matter how much you have to repeat yourself.
If Depression was a person...
[Depression isn’t a few days of feeling down or sad. Depression is a long-lasting feeling of numbness, emotional exhaustion and unexplainable guilt]
If depression was a person, she would be a murderer. Not just a murderer, but also a torturer. She has no target group, no limits and no empathy. She can pounce on anybody, at any moment, without any signs or triggers. Her attacks are crippling, both physically and mentally, and she drains all emotions from your body. Sometimes, when she is feeling generous, she will allow you to feel a handful of emotions: pain; emptiness; loneliness; sadness; guilt. Personally, I prefer her to drain me completely.
She is a sadistic and evil woman, who is getting more popular daily. She even has fans, is trending with teenagers and is considered a hopeless romantic. People pretend to know her, thinking they will become popular with their peers, which sometimes overshines her real victims. Wishing for an attack from her is like wishing for solitary confinement - being isolated from all human contact.
Her victims suffer badly, and sometimes silently. But, Depression likes to play games with her victim and the people around them. She likes to get her victim to show subtle signs of her presence, seeing if the people around them will notice. Unexplained cuts, bruising, bald patches and burns can be signals of her presence. Sometimes, she loses the game, but she can win too.
The rules of the game are simple - show or tell someone you’re one of her victims and you may win, depending on whether they support you. To lose, you must suffer silently.
Its about time we grabbed Depression by her hair, and show her the door, because she has taken way too many lives already. Don't let her take yours.
