Today I want to talk about something heavy. Something we often ignore until itтАЩs too late тАФ mental health. Across India, we are seeing heartbreaking incidents that remind us how fragile mental well-being can be, and how much work we have ahead.

In Rishikesh, a 26-year-old man and his mother from MP, burdened with debt of over тВ╣50 lakh and lacking family support, jumped into the Ganga. The man survived; the mother is missing. The man was already depressed, and there seemed to be nowhere to turn. (The Times of India)
In Bengaluru, a 26-year-old electrician, Lokesh Pavan Krishna, jumped off a 24th-floor balcony. He left a note citing serious health issues. (The Times of India)
A senior resident doctor at AIIMS Rishikesh was found dead in his hostel room, suspected suicide. He reportedly left a note about being unhappy with life. (The Times of India)
Even medical professionals arenтАЩt safe: the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) recently reported that senior doctors, residents, and students are suffering, with stress, burnout, and interpersonal pressures taking a heavy toll. (The Times of India)

These incidents arenтАЩt isolated. They are just the tip of an iceberg we often cannotтАФor refuseтАФto see. They show:
Stigma still kills тАФ even when someone reaches out, the are few safe spaces to be honest without judgement.
Support systems are weak тАФ whether family, workplace, or healthcare infrastructure, many people slip through the cracks.
Burnout and the тАЬstrong-doctorтАЭ myth тАФ doctors and caregivers are supposed to be resilient always. But they're also human, with fears, pain, and limits.
Lack of early intervention тАФ when someone is already deeply in crisis, the options become narrow.
тЭдя╕П What Mental Health Really Means
Mental health isnтАЩt just about not being mentally ill. ItтАЩs about:
Having emotional resilience
Being able to cope with lifeтАЩs pressures
Feeling safe asking for help
Having access to someone who listens without judgment
Knowing that itтАЩs okay to not be okay
So what can we do тАФ individually and collectively тАФ to change this? Here are some ideas:
Talk openly тАФ sharing stories, using тАЬIтАЩm strugglingтАЭ instead of hiding pain can make a big difference.
Listen & believe тАФ when someone reaches out, respond with compassion. DonтАЩt say тАЬjust cheer up,тАЭ ask тАЬhow can I help?тАЭ
Make help accessible тАФ encourage everyone to know about mental health helplines, local therapists, support groups.
Look out for signs тАФ withdrawal, sudden mood changes, talk of hopelessness, physical declining health тАФ all could be clues.
Dismantle stigma тАФ in homes, schools, workplaces: teach that itтАЩs okay to not be okay, and that seeking help is strength.
Systems change тАФ better mental health resources in hospitals, better policies for workers (including doctors), more awareness campaigns.
