He first learns to hide his Witted disposition from fellow-dweller of the Wit-closet, Burrich, who takes responsibility for Fitz's upbringing out of devotion to Fitz's deceased father. What Fitz acquires under Burrich's tutelage is an education in shame. The two of them live on the margins of the royal court in a small room above the stables of Buckkeep castle, though Fitz is initially made to sleep in a box stall where he immediately bonds with a "half-grown pup" named Nosy (Assassin's Apprentice 13). When Burrich discovers that a Wit connection has formed between the boy and dog, he confronts Fitz and, with a "grieved face," explains: "Fitz, this is wrong. It's bad, what you have been doing with this pup. It's unnatural [...] It makes a man less than a man" (40). Throughout his diatribe on the evils of the Wit, Burrich's many references to the term "man" shift ambiguously from the generic ("[it] makes you a beast [...] until no man could look on you and think you had ever been a man") to the gender-specific: "I'll see that [Chivalry's] son grows up a man, and not a wolf. I'll do it if it kills us both" (40, 42). Burrich uses gender shaming, in other words, to deter Fitz from exploring his Witted inclinations. He fears the magic is "unnatural" because it is emasculating, "a disgusting weakness that no true man indulged" (Royal 102). He tells Fitz that the "blood of the wild hunt," which he associates with Fitz's "damned mother's blood," threatens to drown the manly "blood of kings that's in [him]" (Assassin's Apprentice 41, 43). If "the boy has to be taught [to be] a man," as Burrich insists (43), then he must learn to feel shame for what Fitz later calls his "taint" (213), the effeminate magical legacy of his maternal bloodline.

the quotes here also really highlight some of the classed and racialized dynamics of the wit. like, it's a "taint" in fitz's "blood," a "wild" magic presumed to descend by inheritance from his lowborn, outsider mother and not his "kingly" father. it's a type of uncivilizedness, a savagery that calls into question fitz's humanness. she introduces more duchies-born witted characters in tawny man and with that plotline I think she handles it much more explicitly as a racial/ethnic minority identity, but you can see some of the elements she's trying to pull together here... like fitz's mother, burrich is an outsider to the duchies by birth, and he has managed to come up from a hired soldier to a position of some status and respect at buckkeep, as stablemaster and "chivalry's man." his status is only possible because of his repression of his own magic and is definitely threatened by fitz's refusal to repress the wit ... dare I quote raya @chicago-geniza and say this too is assimilation and its discontents

(note, i really appreciate that hobb leaves the actual mechanism of magical inheritance ambiguous: different magics seem to run in families but are never exclusive to those families; when someone inherits a magic they're not "supposed" to have per their known family history, it causes public speculation about their heritage, but no definitive answer is necessarily established (for example, we never actually find out for sure which side of the family fitz inherited the wit from). and there is a consistent implication that all types of people have some likelihood of magical ability. i find it to be a very rare example of a fantasy story that includes heritable magic, set in a world where characters do not have a robust science of genetics, that still avoids eugenic assumptions about heritability)

I agree! There's also how it intersects with Fitz as a dog/wolf. At the start of AA his status as a puppy and not a human boy is talked about in very racialized and classist ways. His mother will come looking for her pup, he is placed with Vixen, Burrich's wit partner as his foster mother, and since Burrich looks after his father's hounds he will look after his by-blow. There's also how Chivalry was implied to have been engaging in sex tourism, and Verity connecting his pressuring of the Mountains to open up the pass with Chivalry conceiving Fitz.

my number one advice for parents is to listen to your children tbh. and i dont just mean listening to their problems i mean like. when your kid recites the plot of a movie youve already seen or your tells you about what they did at school today or wants to show you their roblox gameplay. youve gotta be invested in knowing your kid as a person or why are you even doing the whole parenting thing.

If you think about it too, abled people do it all the time. Deciding to drink to excess at a party knowing they'll have a hangover. Going to a theme park knowing walking all day is going to hurt their feet by the end. We have the right to make those same decisions.

I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.
