I say fandoms never really die, but sometimes I think they do. Like the John Carter, Warlord of Mars series is one of the most influential works of early science fiction, and nobody turned out for the film. There was a major fandom in Victorian Britain for Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel The Coming Race, and i bet 999 out of 1,000 of you have never even heard of that book.

There was a CW series of Tom Swift a few years ago and I don't think anyone watched it.

Star Wars almost died.

From the late 1980s to the mid 90s it was kinda dead.

Sure, there were fans. But it was mostly comic collectors and older nerds fangirling over the original trilogy. There were no toys or collectables being made. Hardcore fans were openly mocked because Star Wars was ollllllld, almost as old as (chuckle, wheeze) Star Trek. I remember feeling genuinely shocked when The Phantom Menace was announced.

Wouldn't that be the special edition rereleases? I remember seeing them in theaters with my brother and dad, and playing with like... rereleased versions of the old toys? I think? I feel like star wars had a rennaisance in the 90s, that or i was in elementary school when they came out and it felt like a thing

That would've been the 1997 "special edition", getting people hyped for the upcoming Phantom Menace in 1999. A whole generation of kiddos didn't know anything about Star Wars so they started an education campaign.

Around 1985 they released it on VHS and then again in 1995 but I dunno if that was the Lucas remaster with all the stupid changes (Greedo Shot First, Death Star Explosion Ring, bad CGI). Prior to all that the trilogy was primarily available on laserdisc because nerds LOVED laserdisc.

I think what really helped Star Wars were the Del Ray books done by Timothy Zahn - the original Thrawn trilogy which cemented their whole 'Expanded Universe' and gave people more adventures of Luke and company, plus Dark Horse comics getting in the act too. Which led to LucasArts games like X-wing and Tie Fighter and Dark Forces, which led to new Jedi books and games leading up to the 'Special Edition'.

Yeah! I remember those. LucasArts cranked out Star Wars games all through the 1990s, almost one a year, regular as clockwork.

I was also gonna mention Lego Star Wars but after googling was shocked to learn the first sets didn't come out until 2000.

I have the precious original trilogy on VHS. It’s a remastered version for home, and purchased before the special editions came along. Only thing is they start with a George Lucas interview so I always had to FF to the movie.

Karpov had cemented his position as the world's best player and world champion by the time Garry Kasparov arrived on the scene. In their first match, the World Chess Championship 1984 in Moscow, the first player to win six games would win the match. Karpov built a 4–0 lead after nine games. The next 17 games were drawn, setting a record for world title matches, and it took Karpov until game 27 to gain his fifth win. In game 31, Karpov had a winning position but failed to take advantage and settled for a draw. He lost the next game, after which 14 more draws ensued. Karpov held a solidly winning position in Game 41, but again blundered and had to settle for a draw. After Kasparov won games 47 and 48, FIDE President Florencio Campomanes unilaterally terminated the match, citing the players' health. Karpov is said to have lost 10 kg over the course of the match. The match had lasted an unprecedented five months, with five wins for Karpov, three for Kasparov, and 40 draws.
